Aloha kakou! This is Congressman Kai Kahele and I am pleased to 
announce that my office has introduced two pieces of federal legislation to 
support Hawaiʻi’s dynamic agriculture industry and growing agribusiness 
community.  
 
The Cacao Tree Health Initiative Act could help create an expansive 
Hawaiʻi brand of cacao found only in our region of the U.S. The Floriculture 
and Nursery Health Initiative Act could further boost our islands’ flowers 
and nursery plants. 
 
Specifically, these bills authorize funding for the research and development 
of scientific tools to address all current and emerging plant pests and 
diseases that threaten domestic cacao, floriculture and nursery plants.  
 
Hawaiʻi has enormous growth potential as a premier global source for agri-
business. Diversifying our economy is tantamount to that continued growth. 
At the same time, we must also focus on wealth building for our farmers 
and small business owners to grow a robust economy.  
 
That is why we made it a priority to visit and speak directly with farmers and 
others in the agri-business throughout the second Congressional district. 
My staff and I toured farms across all four counties in Hawaiʻi. We learned 
first-hand about the invasive species and pests which plague our crops and 
reduce our local yield of produce. 
 
With the collective efforts of Hawaiʻi’s Congressional Delegation, we 
introduced two other bills to support macadamia nut and coffee farmers 
against all threats to their products. These four bills will build a 
comprehensive package that will elevate Hawaiʻi to compete in the world’s 
agricultural economy. Mahalo!
