    Motile aeromonads recovered from tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured in earthen ponds in the Philippines: assessment of antibiotic susceptibility and multidrug resistance to selected antibiotics

    A total of 177 motile Aeromonas spp., comprised of A. hydrophila (n=162) and A. sobria (n=15), isolated from the water, sediment, gills and intestines of tilapia collected from the grow-out culture earthen ponds in the Philippines were investigated for their antimicrobial susceptibility to 10 antibiotics commonly used in fish aquaculture. All motile Aeromonas spp. tested generally exhibited a very high percentage of resistance to amoxicillin (A. hydrophila: 95%; A. sobria: 100%), erythromycin (99%;100%), neomycin (83%;100%), and oxytetracycline (92%;100%), respectively. On the contrary, they showed substantial susceptibility to chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, doxycycline, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin. Results of the antimicrobial susceptibility testing demonstrated that 94.4% and 100% of A. hydrophila and A. sobria isolates tested were resistant to antibiotics belonging to at least 3 or more categories and therefore considered as multiple drug resistant strains. The multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) indexing of A. hydrophila and A. sobria strains showed that they originated from high-risk sources

    Effects of selenium adaptation on intestinal morphology, antioxidant-relate genes expression and intestinal microflora of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

    In the study, the effects of selenium on intestinal tissue morphology, antioxidant-related genes, and intestinal flora of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were studied. For this purpose, 180 healthy grass carps (20.0±2.0 g) were randomly divided into three groups with three replicates each: the corresponding amount of anhydrous sodium selenite was added to make experimental water solutions of different concentrations, including 0 μg/L Se4+ (control group), 200 μg/L Se4+ group and 300 μg/L Se4+ group. The experiment was carried out for 42 days. The obtained results showed that: at the end of the experiment, the 200 μg/L Se4+ adaptation can have beneficial effects on the intestinal villi height and goblet cells. The CuZnSOD and CAT genes mRNA levels of grass carp intestine were strongly upregulated in the 200ug/L Se4+ group. 200ug/L selenium could increase the expression level of the Hsp70 gene in the intestinal tract of grass carp after 42 days of adaptation. At the genus level, the most abundant sequence in the gut of Se-treated grass carp was Pseudomonas, while Aeromon, Flavobacterium, and Defluviimonas were more abundant in the control group. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that 200ug/L Se4+ selenium adaptation can positively affect gut morphology and antioxidant responses and can alter the gut microbiota structure of grass carp. The results will provide a theoretical basis for further research on the effect of selenium on aquatic animals

    Embryonic Development of Black Neon Tetra Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, 1961

    The current study described the embryonic development stages of black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi), an economic ornamental fish. We characterized the stages of the zygote, cleavage, blastula, gastrula, segmentation, pharyngula, and hatching occurring during embryogenesis, which emphasizes changing spectrum of the main development processes from fertilization to incubation. The findings were put forth and photographed by examining live embryos under microscopy. Embryonic development of black neon tetra concluded at 24 ± 0.5°C water temperature at 20-21 hours. The first embryonic division occurs within the first 43 minutes after fertilization, and the process goes on to blastula at 02 hours and 28 minutes. The gastrula stage began at 02.57 hours, while 6 somite segmentation stages were observed to occur at 08.14 hours. Following the pharyngula stage seen between 17 to 20 hours, the hatching occurred at 20-21hours. The results of this study can provide significant benefits to professional breeders in the aquaculture of black neon tetra and other ornamental fish species
