Effects of Dietary Alpha-ketoglutarate Supplementation on Growth and Serum Biochemical Parameters of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) Fingerlings
An 8-week growth trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) on growth performance and serum biochemical parameters of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), and to determine the optimal amount of AKG in feeds. A total of 450 grass carp (mean initial body weight, 35.64±1.39 g) were randomly divided into five treatment groups, with three replicates each. Treatments were, basal diet supplemented with 0% (the control group), 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% AKG, respectively. The results showed that fish fed the 0.75% AKG diet had significantly higher final body weight, weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, lysozyme (LSZ) activity, and significantly lower feed conversion ratio (FCR), viscerasomatic index (VSI), serum malondialdehyde (MDA), and UREA content than fish fed the control diet (p0.05). The present study suggests that feed supplementation with 0.75% AKG can promote growth of Ctenopharyngodon idella fingerlings, enhance antioxidant capacity and their non-specific immunity
Effects of Dietary Protein and Energy Levels on Growth, Feed utilization and Body Composition of Skin Carp Hemibarbus labeo
A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary protein and energy levels on the growth, feed utilization, and body composition of skin carp Hemibarbus labeo. Ten experimental diets with five levels of crude protein (CP) and two levels of crude lipid (CL) were designated as 32%, 36%, 40%, 44%, 48% and 18 MJ/kg,19.5MJ/kg, respectively. Final body weight (FBW) and weight gain rate (WGR) increased, whereas the feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased, with increasing dietary protein level from 32% to 48%. Fish fed the diets containing 44% CP and CL providing 19.5MJ/kg exhibited higher FBW and WGR, but lower FI and FCR. At the end of the feeding trial, the intraperitoneal fat ratio (IPFR) decreased with the increase of CP levels. Significant differences (P<0.05) were found in the carcass composition of fish fed different levels of CP and CL. No noticeable trend was observed for moisture and ash in the carcass. The optimum CP and CL level were found to be 44% and 19.5MJ/kg respectively for skin carp reared in net cages
Effects of Supplemental Nucleotides, Taurine, and Squid Liver Paste on Feed Intake, Growth Performance, Serum Biochemical Parameters, and Digestive Enzyme Activities of Juvenile GIFT Tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) Fed Low Fishmeal Diets
This 8 week feeding trial evaluated the effects of three feeding stimulants (FS) on feed intake, growth performance, body composition, serum biochemical parameters, and digestive enzyme activities for juvenile GIFT tilapia fed low fishmeal diets. Four test diets were supplemented with 0, 16 g/kg taurine (Tau), 0.4 g/kg mixed nucleotides (Mix-NT), and 30 g/kg squid liver paste (SQLP) respectively, and fed to juvenile GIFT strain of Oreochromis niloticus (3.34±0.01 g). The results showed that feed intake (FI) significantly increased with SQLP. Specific growth rate (SGR) in fish fed SQLP or Mix-NT diet was significantly higher than that of the Tau and control group. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) ranged from 1.34 in the group fed Mix-NT to 1.50 in the group fed Tau, with no significant differences compared to the control group. Three feeding stimulants had no significant influence on whole body composition of tilapia. Fish fed Mix-NT diet showed significantly higher intestinal protease activity and intestinal amylase activity than that of other groups. High-density lipoprotein content in serum was significantly higher in fish fed SQLP diet than that of other groups. In conclusion, supplementation of 0.4 g/kg mixed nucleotides or 30 g/kg squid liver paste in low fishmeal diets could provide better growth performance for juvenile tilapia, and SQLP could act as an effective FS under these conditions. Supplementation of Mix-NT could reduce the FCR in these fish
Acinetobacter lwoffii: an Emerging Pathogen for Red Head Disease in Farmed Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus
Red head disease has become a significant emerging cause of economic damage in the farming of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Only scare information is available on this disease caused by Acinetobacter lwoffii in channel catfish. In this study, a virulent strain, temporarily named R21, was isolated from diseased channel catfish suffering from red head disease, and identified through phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic characteristics. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to examine isolate R21 and compare it to other known isolates. In addition, isolate R21 appears to be resistant to azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, norfloxacin, and oxacillin, but is still susceptible to aminoglycosides, amphenicols, sulfonamides and tetracycline drugs for veterinary uses in aquaculture as revealed when screened against a range of common antibiotics. Using Linked Data to Enhance the User Experience: Linking library data to VIAF IDs to enrich the catalog at Smithsonian Libraries

Linked Data promotes the sharing of information through harnessing the power of the Semantic Web and can enable cultural heritage organizations to better share their collections and engage users with added findability and accessibility via the Web
Core photos, Hole 1 (PTA-2), Humu‘ula Groundwater Research Project
The site of the first hole was based on results of a geophysical (Magnetotelluric or MT) survey. We drilled into the area where the measured subsurface resistivity is consistent with highest level water saturation – on the southern edge of the Pohakuloa Training Area cantonment. During the drilling, we encountered the following:
- ~215 meters (700’) below the ground surface — The initial stable saturated zone.
- ~215 meters (700’) – 345 meters (830’) — A perching layer of clay-rich ash. Water levels began to drop.
- 345 meters (830’) – ~550 meters (1,800’) — Dry rock.
- ~550 meters (1,800’) — A second saturated interval.
- ~550 meters (1,800’) – 1,763 meters (5,780’) — Water levels in the borehole remained stable. This deeper water is likely the regional water table for this area.
- ~1,000 m and beyond — The borehole temperatures showed significant increases.
Intervals of intruded dike rocks indicate a dike-impounded aquifer. Along with the unexpected presence of high-elevation water, the borehole temperatures significantly increased below depths of ~1,000 m, suggestive of a previously unknown geothermal reservoir in the Saddle region.Also known as “PTA” or “Saddle Road Project,” the Humuʻula Groundwater Research Project (HGRP) aimed to research the groundwater resources in the Hawaiʻi Island ‘Saddle’ region between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes by drilling two test holes on Army Garrison Hawaii land. Results include the discovery of: i) groundwater at a much shallower depth than expected, ii) a dike-impounded aquifer, and iii) a potential geothermal reservoir.
By using the diamond wireline core drilling technology, we collected a continuous sequence of rock core. We documented our progress in a blog and made a complete stratigraphic record of the region. This continuous stratigraphic sequence contained subaerial shield-stage and post-shield-stage lava rock and ash samples from the Mauna Kea Volcano, documenting the area’s environmental, geologic, hydrologic, and thermal history.The U.S. Army funded the drilling, initial characterization of the core, and ongoing analyses of the fluid. Detailed logging of the core was supported by the National Science Foundation

To measure the extent of the regional table found by the first hole, we drilled a second test hole approximately 10 kilometers west of the PTA-2 borehole. Within the top ~1,500 meters the hole did not encounter the regional aquifer, but found a sequence of confined, pressurized aquifers from ~300 meters below the ground surface. Layers of soil, ash, or explosive eruptive deposits confined these aquifers as highly pressurized water trapped between impermeable layers.
