This hands-on session will provide you with an overview of Census data and you will gain confidence by practicing searching for and downloading commonly used demographic data using American FactFinder. Participants will develop an understanding of the differences between the Decennial Census and American Community Survey and when to use each data set.     Effects of Partial Replacement of Fish Meal by Fermented Copra Meal on the Growth and Feed Efficiency in Black Tiger Shrimp, Penaeus monodon

    The potential of fermented copra meal (FCM) as an alternative to fish meal as a protein source for tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon practical diet was evaluated. Five isonitrogenous (41% crude protein) diets with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% fish meal protein replaced with protein from FCM were formulated. P. monodon (average weight 0.38 ± 0.02 g) were distributed in 100 L capacity fiberglass tanks at 20 shrimp each. The diets were fed 4 times daily for 9 weeks initially at 15% of the shrimp ABW and reduced to 8%. The experiment was conducted in triplicate in a flow-through culture system. The parameters examined include growth, feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival, whole body nutrient composition, protein efficiency ratio (PER), and protein productive value (PPV) as a measure of protein retention. After the feeding trial, results demonstrated that regardless of the FCM replacement level in the diet, no significant differences were observed in all the parameters (growth, FCR, survival, whole body nutrient composition, PER and PPV) measured. Thus, fermented copra meal can be used as alternative protein source and can replace up to 40% of the fish meal protein in black tiger shrimp practical diet

    Molecular Characterization of MyD88 in Pinctada fucata and its Response to Lipopolysaccharides and Polyinosinic-cytidylic Acid

    Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) is a key and essential adapter involved in the interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) and toll-like receptor (TLR)-mediated activation signaling pathway. To investigate molecular characterization of MyD88 and its gene expression profile in response to stimulation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and polyinosinic-cytidylic acid (poly (I: C)), we isolated the MyD88 cDNA sequence in Pinctada fucata and analyzed expression patterns using quantitative real-time PCR. Sequence analysis indicated that Pf-MyD88 cDNA is 1463bp in length and contains a1050bp open reading frame that encodes a 349 α peptide. Pf-MyD88 has the highest similarity with homologues of Crassostrea gigas and highly conserved death and toll/IL-1R domains. Furthermore, during LPS and poly (I:C)-stimulated experiments in the gill, peak expression levels of Pf-MyD88 were detected at 2h and 8h with a 1.58-fold and 3.58-fold increase, respectively. The results revealed the existence of a MyD88-dependent signaling pathway in P. fucata and contributed to understanding the potential role of Pf-MyD88 in the TLR/IL-1R-mediated signaling pathway

    Effect of Dietary Alanine and Glycine Supplementation on Growth Performance, Body Composition and Apparent Nutrient Digestibility of Juvenile Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

    A 42-day growth trial was undertaken to estimate the effects of supplemented alanine and glycine on growth performance, feed utilization, and apparent digestibility of nutrients in juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Three diets were compared: 1) fishmeal (FM), 2) soybean meal (SBM) and 3) alanine and glycine supplemented (NEAA) where alanine and glycine were added to the soybean diet to achieve the desired alanine and glycine content in FM diet. Results showed that NEAA diet decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) by 15.3%, improved average final weight by 13.4%, and increased 14.0% of protein retention compared with the SBM diet (P0.05). Serum urea content from the NEAA diet was significantly lower than FM and SBM diets (P<0.05). In conclusion, while adding alanine and glycine to a plant based diet can improve the growth performance, liver function, and protein utilization of juvenile grass carp, it does not improve performance to the levels of an FM diet
