    Characterization of the Embryonic and Larval Development of Wild Pike-Barb (Luciobarbus esocinus) Biological Parameters, and the Possibility of Breeding

    This study was conducted to obtain preliminary data on the possibility of breeding this species through artificial insemination and to determine the incubation period at different temperatures (°C) of hatchery water [20 (A1), 22 (A2), 25 (A3) and 26 (A4); (±1)] and to determine the morphological and larval growth parameters of L. esocinus. The blastoderm formed an embryonic shield 43 h (A1 and A2) and 36 h (A3 and A4) after insemination. The eggs hatched after 113 h (A1 and A2) and 61.5 h (A3 and A4) after insemination, and new larvae were observed. Exposing the newly fertilized eggs to various temperatures during the incubation period resulted in significantly longer duration of embryo formation, egg hatching and yolk sac consumption (h) at 20°C and 22°C than at 25°C and 26°C (P 0.05). However, significant differences in day-degree of hatching were observed among all the groups (P < 0.05)

    Effects of Dietary Nucleotide Yeast on Immune Responses and Antioxidant Enzyme Activities of Rainbow Trout Juveniles (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

    This study aimed at demonstrating the effects of dietary supplementation of nucleotide yeast base protein (Nu-Pro®) (NP) on the antioxidant enzyme activities and immune response in liver and blood tissues of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish with an average initial weight of 27.75±0.26 g were randomly assigned to four groups with three replicates. Throughout the 60 day grow-out period the control group was fed a fish meal based basal diet, and three other groups were fed diets in which 20 (NP 20), 40 (NP 40) and 60 % (NP 60) fish meal was substituted with nucleotide (Nu-Pro® (NP) yeast). There were no significant changes of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in liver among the experimental groups. A significant decrease (P<0.05) in malondialdehyde (MDA) level of tissue was observed in all nucleotide supplemented groups when compared to the control group. Serum lysozyme (LYZ) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities and nitric oxide (NO) level of liver tissue were significantly (P<0.05) increased in fish fed with nucleotide yeast based protein diets. The results showed that the fish in all nucleotide supplemented groups showed significantly better antioxidant activity and immune responses

    Effects of Sustainable Diets containing Fish-Trim Waste, on Growth Performance of Juvenile Sablefish (Anopoploma fimbria)

    A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the use of alternative fish feeds produced from fish-trim waste in high plant protein diets for juvenile sablefish (Anopoploma fimbria). Fish meal in the control diet (CD) was replaced in the experimental diets by low molecular weight hydrolysate (LMWH) protein derived from Pacific whiting (Merluccius productus) processing waste, or by Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) processing trim (ST), which was incorporated into the feed with an experimental heated ball mill. The feeding trial was conducted in an indoor recirculating seawater system and each feed was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 50 fish (average initial body weight of 57.5 g). The results showed that compared to the control diet, the diets containing LMWH or ST significantly increased feed consumption and fish weight gain. The ST group showed a significantly higher weight gain than the LMWH group. The ST feed, but not the LMWH feed, had a significantly lower feed conversion ratio than the CD feed. The ST feed increased lipid retention efficiency and lipid content in whole body tissue. These results demonstrate that salmon fish trim waste and enzyme hydrolyzed whiting trim in high plant protein diets can increase the performance in sablefish
