    Presentation slidesJoin us for a fun and informative session exploring options for sustaining digital cultural heritage. We will describe a number of content management options, focusing on the Mukurtu CMS, a free content management software that allows communities to preserve, share, manage, license, and curate their digital heritage and stories. Mukurtu promotes a community approach to digital heritage management and preservation, integrating already established social and cultural systems with technological tools. In this session, participants will get hands-on experience with Mukurtu CMS, including: 1) basic site set up 2) core features, and 3) procedures to curate digital heritage items with Mukurtu CMS. Participants will see examples of Mukurtu in use in communities emphasizing sustainable preservation strategies, cultural protocols, and the use of traditional knowledge labels. Participants will also be introduced to the IMLS-funded Kaipumakani Project, which is providing resources and support for digital cultural heritage preservation in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific

    Providencia rettgeri: an Emerging Pathogen for Freshwater Cultured Whiteleg Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei)

    Bacteriosis is a major economic problem affecting the farming industry of whiteleg shrimp Penaeus vannamei. Little information is available on Providencia rettgeri as a possible pathogen for P. vannamei. In this study, a virulent strain, here named S6, was isolated from diseased P. vannamei, identified phenotypically, and molecularly, as P. rettgeri. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to examine the taxonomic position and relatedness of isolate S6 to other P. rettgeri isolates. When screened against a range of common veterinary antibiotics, isolate S6 exhibited resistance to aminoglycosides and sulfonamides antibiotics in aquaculture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of P. rettgeri as a causal agent of bacteriosis in freshwater farmed P. vannamei

    The Nutrient Digestibility of Commercial and Farm-Prepared Feeds for Onchorynchus mykiss, Dicentrarchus labrax, and Salmo trutta labrax

    We compared the digestion rate of commercial, and farm-prepared feeds, in three species (Onchorynchus mykiss, Dicentrarchus labrax, and Salmo trutta labrax) reared at two temperatures (12˚C and 17˚C). Rearing conditions, except for hydrodynamic conditions of the offshore farms, were simulated in the experiment. There were significant differences in overall digestibility between the diets; overall protein digestibility of the farm-prepared feed was much higher than that of the commercial feed (P<0.01). Lipid digestibility of farm-prepared diets was competitive but not significant compared to commercial feeds. The results may be attributed to poorly digestible ingredients of commercial feeds while farm-prepared feeds include mainly fresh anchovy and other ingredients such as hardtack meal, corn meal, wheat flour, and soybean meal. Consequently, farm-prepared diets seem to be much more competitive in respect to both digestibility, and cost, compared to commercial diets. In addition, the nutrient digestion rate of farm-prepared feeds was more balanced and stable

    Profitability Analysis of Monosex Tilapia Production under Three Culture Models in Hebei and Southern Coastal Provinces of China

    The purpose of this study was to understand and compare profitability indices of tilapia production under monoculture, polyculture, and integrated culture models. The study covered a total of 47 tilapia farmers in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Yunnan provinces in the southern coastal areas, and Hebei province in Northern China. The study focused on two objectives: (i) Socioeconomic and production characteristics that influence tilapia production; (ii) Profitability indices, and breakeven analysis of tilapia production using a structured questionnaire. All calculations for the 3 culture models in this study are based on 1mu (667m2 or 0.666 ha). The study found that all tilapia farms visited were owned by males. About 72.9% of the farmers were 30 to 50 years of age; 50% of the farmers had undergone vocational training. Tilapia farm production areas averaged 70.2mu (~4.7 ha) per farmer, and pond aquaculture accounted for 87.5% of their production. Tilapia production costs were an average of US1168.4(1yuan=US1168.4 (1 yuan=US6.6). Positive Gross Margins (GM) and Net Incomes (NFI) were observed. Tilapia production was economically viable with positive Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of US0.24inmonoculture,andUS0.24 in monoculture, and US0.15 in other culture models. Farmers with low yields, especially tilapia cultured in an integrated model were expected to sell fish at US0.93perkilogramtorecoverinvestedcapitalwithinasingleproductionseasonaveraging6months.PositiveReturnsonInvestment(ROI)ofUS0.93per kilogram to recover invested capital within a single production season averaging 6 months. Positive Returns on Investment (ROI) of US0.22-0.15/kg were observed in monoculture and polyculture respectively. In conclusion, the study found that for farmers to increase tilapia production profit margins, tilapia stocking densities need to increase, especially under integrated culture, and improvements are needed in fish feed utilization to reduce current feed conversion ratios (FCR). In order to boost sales, farmers must ensure production of quality fish, and seek alternative markets such as Africa
