Effects of Substitution of Fish Meal with Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae Meal, in Yellow Catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) Diets
An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate effects of replacing fish meal (FM) with black soldier fly larvae meal (BSF) on growth performance, feed utilization, and plasma parameters, for juvenile yellow catfish, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. Six isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were prepared substituting the FM protein with BSF protein in the following amounts: 0 (control group), 10% (BSF10), 15% (BSF15), 20% (BSF20), 25% (BSF25) and 30% (BSF30). Three replicate groups of juvenile yellow catfish (initial weight of 1.20 ± 0.01 g) were stocked in circular tanks at a rate of 30 fish per tank. The results showed that 20% of the FM in the control diet could be replaced with BSF without significantly reducing weight gain, feed conversion ratio, or whole body and muscle proximate composition. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter, crude protein, crude lipids, gross energy, or amino acids were not affected by 10% FM replacement. 30% FM replacement in the BSF30 diet significantly increased the concentration of cholesterol (CHO) and nitric oxide (NO) in the plasma, and significantly reduced the inhibition of superoxide radical anion formation. In conclusion, it appears that up to 20% of the FM in conventional yellow catfish diets can be replaced with BSF, and thus account for up to 8.9% of the total protein in the diet without causing a significant reduction in growth performance
Effect of Dietary Surfactin Supplementation on Parameters Related to Lipid Metabolism of Orange-Spotted Grouper
This trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary surfactin supplementation on parameters related to lipid metabolism of orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) juveniles. Three hundred and sixty fish were randomly divided into 6 treatment groups, and fed dietary surfactin levels: S0 (control group), S25, S50, S100, S150, and S200 mg/kg, respectively. Four replicates with 15 fish per tank were randomly assigned to each group. The trial period was 56 days. The lipid levels in serum, liver, and whole fish, and some lipid metabolism enzymes in the liver were measured. When compared to fish fed no surfactin, fish fed diets supplemented with surfactin presented lower levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in serum; lower lipid levels in whole fish and liver (only 100 and 150 mg/kg surfactin groups) were observed. Dietary 100 mg/kg surfactin supplementation had the most influence on lipids level in serum, whole fish, and liver of orange-spotted grouper juveniles. Lower levels of fatty acid synthetase and higher activity of hepatic lipase and lipoprotein (lipase in liver) were affected only by 100 mg/kg surfactin supplementation in diet. The levels of acetyl CoA carboxylase were similar in all groups. This suggests that appropriate supplementation levels of surfactin in the diet of orange-spotted grouper juveniles might have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism to improve fish health statu
Beyond the Panic Button: A Dialogue on Sustainability and Public Services Challenges
Presentation slidesThe William S. Richardson School of Law Library staff is exploring “sustainability” as the balance of working relationships between staff and patrons to ensure safety for all. In particular, we have been working with public patrons who exhibit behavioral issues or are “houseless.” We aspire toward former Chief Justice William S. Richardson’s legacy, which was to practice Aloha, compassion, and ethics towards those who are vulnerable or oppressed. Our presentation will discuss findings on how local libraries deal with public patrons with behavioral issues or who are “houseless;” how we have designed our library space, services practice, policies, and procedures to balance our needs for safety with our values; and how behavioral health professionals, regular patrons, students, and staff feel about these issues. Lastly, we would like to dialogue with other local library professionals — what else can be done to practice “sustainability” between human relationships, public educational institutions, and the community
