    Geothermal energy in Hawaii: a comparative analysis of wind, solar, and geothermal energy resources

    A thesis and presentation for the course Geology & Geophysics 499 - Undergraduate Thesis. This course was offered by the Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Hawaii at Manoa.Despite being wholly volcanic in origin, Hawaiʻi has had only one commercial geothermal production facility operating over time. In May 2018, this sole geothermal plant, Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) ceased operations due to the nearby eruption along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone (KERZ). Hawaiʻi’s geothermal resources are potentially vast, yet they are largely uncharacterized (Lautze et al. 2015). One study completed by GeothermEx Inc. in 2000 estimated that the state of Hawaiʻi could have more than 1500 MW of geothermal energy potential, enough to meet nearly three-quarters of the state’s electricity demand (Hawaiian Electric Company Inc. 2016b; GeothermEx 2000). There are cultural sensitivities around geothermal energy production in Hawaiʻi, which initiate debate that can be a roadblock to further geothermal development. Fully understanding and analyzing such sensitivities is beyond the scope of this report. Instead, this report focuses on geothermal energy’s potential in Hawaiʻi by comparing wind, solar, and geothermal resources in terms of cost, land use, and associated hazards. Facts show that geothermal is a clean, baseload renewable energy that can enable Hawaiʻi to achieve its green energy goals. The subsequent discussion will show that geothermal resources in Hawaiʻi have competitive cost projections, low land use, and hazards that are generally well understood and manageable

    Differences in Total Carotenoid Content in Tissues of the Pearl Oyster Pinctada fucata with Regard to Cuticle Shell Color

    The aim of this study was to compare total carotenoid content (TCC) in tissues, and its correlation with shell color between four different shell color strains of Pinctada fucata. A total of 120 individuals (30 golden shells, 30 red shells, 30 black shell and 30 white shells) of P. fucata of similar size were evaluated. In this study, stomach, gill, adductor, and mantle were used for measuring the determination of TCC. The color measurements were taken from both the nacre shells and cuticle shells. The results showed that TCC varies significantly among four different tissues and the four different shell color strains (P 0.05). In the present study, results indicated that the TCC of P. fucata was significantly related to tissue and cuticle shell colors (P 0.05). TCC relating to the cuticle shell color suggested that increasing or decreasing TCC in P. fucata through selective breeding of cuticle shell color was feasible, and it could be significant both for food for humans, and the cultivation of high-quality pearls

    Expression Response Profiles of Toll-Like Receptor Family Members in Cyprinus Carpio after Lipopolysaccharide Stimulation, and Implication for Disease Control in Aquaculture

    In this study, response profiles of 17 Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation were studied at mRNA levels in the liver of the common carp Cyprinus carpio. Three types of gene response profiles were observed in TLR family. The first pattern was that the expressions of some TLRs were initially up-regulated and then decreased with time. This finding indicated that the responses of these TLRs were sensitive to LPS stimulation, and it was suggested that these TLRs were involved in responding and coping with LPS, implying that these TLRs were important in immune defense from Gram-negative bacteria. The second pattern was that some TLR expressions showed no obvious change after LPS stimulation, demonstrating that they were not sensitive to LPS and probably did not recognize LPS, implying that these TLRs should not be regarded as the major receptors to be regulated to prevent disease caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The third pattern was that gene expressions of partial TLRs were significantly downregulated after a period of LPS stimulation, indicating that their gene expressions were inhibited by LPS action, and implying that these TLRs did not initiate the signal pathway for inflammation reaction to clear Gramnegative bacteria. This study is based on the different response patterns of TLRs to LPS, that imply that the sensitive response TLR genes to LPS might be selected as target genes regulated by drugs that control inflammation reaction of diseased fish in aquaculture

    Characterization and Pathology of Aeromonas veronii Biovar Sobria from Diseased Sheatfish Silurus glanis in China

    Aeromonas spp., is an important opportunistic pathogen responsible for great economic losses in aquaculture. In this paper, we report our study of an Aeromonas infection that occurred in cultured sheatfish Silurus glanis in May 2016 in a farm in Tianjin city. Typical external symptoms included petechial skin hemorrhages, ascitic distension of the abdomen, redness and swelling of the anus. The isolate SAV-165 from the diseased fish was identified as A. veronii biovar sobria by biochemical properties and molecular techniques. Experimental challenge showed that a 50% lethal dose (LD50) of SAV-165 was 1.59 × 106 CFU/ml in zebrafish Danio rerio. The antimicrobial susceptibility test indicated that the isolate was susceptible to aminoglycosides and chloramphenicol, but resistant to penicillins and sulphonamides. Histopathological examination showed fatty changes and swelling of hepatocytes in the liver, congestion in the submucosa of intestine and the renal veins of the kidney. This is the first report of A. veronii biovar sobria infection in S. glanis in China
