    Effects of Dietary Niacin on Growth Performance, Serum Biochemistry, Antioxidant Ability of Liver, Intestinal Digestion, and Absorption in Juvenile Golden Pompano

    Six groups of experimental diets containing different levels (14.9, 22.4, 28.6, 37.9, 42.0 and 77.5 mg/kg) of niacin were formulated. Juvenile golden pompano (initial body weight:7.82±0.07 g) were fed in cages for eight weeks. Results showed that moderate niacin in the diet significantly increased (P<0.05) weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency (FER). Dietary niacin levels increased the protein content in whole fish and muscle (P < 0.05). The content of serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and total cholesterol (TCHO) increased significantly and triglyceride (TG) content decreased significantly (P<0.05). C3 and C4 content in serum, and activities of lysozyme (LZM), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) increased significantly (P<0.05). Dietary niacin levels significantly increased (P<0. 05) the catalase (CAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) of the liver when niacin content was more than 28.6 mg/kg. Dietary niacin levels also improved intestinal digestion and absorption by increasing glutamyl transferase (γ-GT)activity. Quadratic regression analysis on WGR indicated that the optimum dietary niacin level for optimal growth of juvenile golden pompano was 29.85 mg/kg

    Effects of Different Levels of Pinus tabulaeformis Pollen on Growth and Ammonia Stress Resistance of Milkfish Fry (Chanos chanos)

    The present preliminary study investigated the effects of different levels of dietary pine pollen from Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. on the growth and efficiency performance and ammonia stress resistance of milkfish fry (Chanos chanos). After acclimation, 600 milkfish fry with average body weight of 0.02 g were stocked in 15, 50L tanks (40 fish per tank). A control diet (without pine pollen, PP) and 4 experimental diets containing various levels of PP, namely, 0, 1.3, 2.6, 3.8, and 5.1 g/kg were prepared and given for 60 days. At termination of the experiment, milkfish were subjected to ammonia stress. Results showed that milkfish fed diets containing various levels of pine pollen exhibited significantly higher weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and better feed conversion ratio (FCR) than fish fed the control diet. Survival rates of the milkfish during the feeding trial were not significantly different among dietary treatments (p>0.05). A separate experiment was conducted in which milkfish were subjected to ammonia stress test following feeding of experimental diets for 2 weeks. Results showed that milkfish fed with diets containing 2.6 to 5.1 g/kg exhibited significantly higher survival (p<0.05) than did those fed with the control diet and with the diet containing 1.3 g/kg PP. The optimal inclusion level of pine pollen was estimated using values for SGR and FCR fitted to quadratic model to be 3.0 g/kg. The results of this study indicated that pine pollen could be used as a dietary additive for the young milkfish to enhance growth and immune response to dissolved ammonia

    Effect of Ammonia Exposure on the Non-Specific Immunity of Fresh Water Pearl Mussel Hyriopsis cumingii

    Ammonia-N, the principal end-product of protein catabolism, is an important environmental toxic factor in ponds. Elevated environmental ammonia-N is very toxic to aquatic animals and has a deleterious effect on their immune system. However, its effect on their immune system remains unclear. In this study, the effects of ammonia-N (0, 5, 10 and 30 mg/L) on immune responses of Fresh Water Pearl Mussel Hyriopsis cumingii were determined. When exposed to 5 mg/L ammonia-N lysozyme activity increased significantly. Superoxide dismutase activity was highest in the 5 mg/L group followed by the 10 mg/L group. The marked decrease of Lysozyme activity of Fresh Water Pearl Mussel Hyriopsis cumingii in 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L ammonia-N groups suggests that the higher concentrations of ammonia-N reduces or inhibits their non-specific immunity. Compared to the control group, superoxide dismutase activity in 30 mg/L ammonia also decreased significantly. When exposed to 5mg/L ammonia-N, catalase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity enhanced. In the 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L group, ammonia-N decreased significantly The lysozyme, catalase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity showed a similar tendency. This suggests that in H. cumingii immunostimulatory response is enhanced at low ammoniaN concentrations. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for disease prevention in the freshwater pearl mussel
