    Changes of Biochemical Components Contents and Gene Expression Profiles in Tissues of Litopenaeus vannamei During Spermatophore Regeneration

    Spermatophore regeneration is an important biological process in Litopenaeus vannamei. In this study, changes of biochemical components contents during spermatophore regeneration showed that in hemolymph, the glucose content significantly increased from day 2 to day 8 and then decreased from day 10 to day 12; triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) contents were relatively stable. In the hepatopancreas, glucose, and TG contents significantly decreased during regeneration; TC contents significantly increased at day 4 and then decreased. In the testes, glucose content significantly increased while TC content significantly decreased during whole stage; TG content at day 4 was highest. In terminal ampoule, changes of glucose and TC contents were similar, the contents at day 4 were highest; TG content at day 6 was significantly lower than day 2. During spermatophore regeneration, expression level of pyruvate kinase (PK) was significantly higher during day 2 to day 4 than at other times, and expression levels of three lipogenesis-related genes diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase homolog 1 (DGAT1), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and sterol O-acyltransferase 2 (SOAT2) were significantly higher during day 2 to day 8 than at other times.     Variation in the Voiced Coronals of Two Fataluku-speaking Villages

    Several studies comment on regional variation in Fataluku, but no detailed study of phonetic variation has yet been published. This paper reports on the distribution of [z], [j], and other voiced coronals in phonetically-controlled speech from fourteen Fataluku speakers—seven from the village of Tutuala and seven from the village of Lospalos. In Tutuala, I find complementary distribution between voiced coronal obstruents and glides, while in Lospalos, the relationship between obstruents and glides is chaotic and speaker-dependent. This difference in homogeneity parallels the make-up of these villages, as Lospalos draws a diverse array of workers from across the Fataluku-speaking area, while Tutuala is relatively remote and has a much smaller draw

    Fermentation-biotechnology to produce high-protein agricultural biomass with potential as a feed ingredient is well-established. However, practical applicability of this technology in aquaculture has not been fully realized. The present work evaluates the nutritional and feed value of fermented sweet potato meal (ProEn-KTM) to replace soybean meal in the diet of juvenile Penaeus vannamei. Four experimental diets containing graded levels of ProEn- KTM replacing 0 (%), 25 (%), 50 (%) and 100 (%) of soybean meal were formulated and fed to P. vannamei for 8 weeks. Results showed that 100 (%) of soybean meal can be replaced by fermented sweet potato and 50 (%) replacement elicited growth promoting effects. Survival, feed conversion, and body composition were similar in all treatments. Dietary inclusion of fermented sweet potato promotes better ratio of the n-3/n-6 fatty acid and lowers the total gut bacteria as well as total Vibrio. Collectively these results suggest that fermented sweet potato meal could fully replace soybean meal in P. vannamei diet. The use of this feed ingredient is a practical approach to meet the increasing needs of proteins in feeds for the expansion and sustainability of P. vannamei aquaculture

    Effects of Different Salinities on Growth, Body Composition, Oxygen Consumption Rate, and Ammonia Excretion Rate in American shad (Alosa sapidissima) Juveniles

    A laboratory experiment was undertaken to analyze the effects of salinity on growth, body composition, oxygen consumption, and ammonia excretion of anadromous American shad (Alosa sapidissima) juveniles. Results showed the best survival rate occurred at 5‰ and 15‰. The relative weight gain and the specific growth rate declined as salinity increased. However, feed conversion rate increased with increasing salinity. Oxygen consumption rates showed a parabolic relationship in relation to salinity. From the quadratic relationship (y= -0.0004x2+0.0166x+0.319; R2=0.801; P<0.05), the highest oxygen consumption rate occurred at a salinity of 20.75‰. The ammonia excretion ratio decreased significantly as salinity increased from 10‰ to 15‰. No further differences were observed in salinities ranging from 15‰ to 40‰. There were no significant influences of salinity on whole body protein and moisture content. Lipid content declined as salinity increased. Results indicate that an appropriate increase in salinity was beneficial to the culture of American shad juveniles. The optimal salinity for American shad juveniles ranged from 15‰ to 20‰

    Streptococcal Infection Caused by Enterococcus casseliflavus in Cultured Meagre (Argyrosomus regius)

    Gram Positive Streptococci (GPS) have become increasingly important fish pathogens. In this study, 170 moribund marine fish (sea bass, gilthead sea bream, meagre, sharp snout sea bream, and marine rainbow trout), obtained from 30 fish farms in the Black Sea and Aegean Sea regions of Turkey, were investigated for the presence of GPS. Streptococci were recovered from fifteen moribund young meagre (Argyrosomus regius) from an inland fish farm located in the Aegean region. The isolates were identified as Enterococcus casseliflavus using a Polymerase Chain Reaction-based (PCR) method. This result was confirmed with 16S rRNA gene sequencing and serological methods, including slide agglutination and IFAT. The diseased meagre showed unilateral or bilateral exophthalmia, loss of eyes, and hemorrhagic ulcerative skin lesions on the body surface. Histopathologically, tubular degeneration and congestion in the kidney, myopathy in the heart tissue, discharge of the white pulp in the spleen, extensive vacuolation of hepatocytes, and congestion in the liver were observed. Intraperitoneal challenge with one of the isolates in healthy European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in resulted mortalities 8 days post-injection

The recent relocation of the main downtown campus library at Hawai‘i Pacific University has provided librarians with the unique opportunity to reimagine allocated spaces, services, and staff workflow. One of the main challenges the library faced is that the library’s new space is considerably smaller than the previous one, which meant the collection had to be substantially reduced. This presentation will showcase how a basic set of guiding principles has been critical to ensuring the success of the transformation. These principles sought to leverage user-centric design practices for collection development, reference, instruction, and circulation interfaces. The session will highlight how other libraries can learn from our experience as they look to reinvent and adapt to shifting circumstances

In the Information Services Department, we have had great success in trusting students with more responsibility and opportunities for employee development. Some examples of responsibilities delegated to students include interviewing and making hiring recommendations, scheduling desk coverage, developing communications and PR, running employee meetings and taking minutes, taking the lead on specific projects, and more. We will leave time at the end for discussion and to hear any other ideas that you all might have
