Hawaii Land Claims, 1908 - 1989: Sand Island

Hybrid Origin of the Thai-Chitralada Tilapia Strain Using DNA Barcoding and Microsatellite Analysis
The Thai-Chitralada strain originates from Egypt and was transferred to Japan. From there a stock of 50 fish were introduced to the Royal Chitralada Palace in Thailand. The commercially cultured strain of Nile tilapia O. niloticus in Thailand, Thai-Chitralada, possesses desirable traits for aquaculture, such as high growth rate integrated with reasonable fecundity and excellent performance in Asian countries. In 2010 a few dozen Thai-Chitralada fish were introduced to Israel from Thailand. The objective of this study is to trace the origin of Thai-Chitralada using DNA barcoding and microsatellite genetic markers. Cytochrome Oxidase I and D-loop sequences of 19 Thai-Chitralada fish clustered into three groups comprising 6, 7, and 6 individuals were homologous to the consensus sequences of O. aureus, O. niloticus, and O. mossambicus, respectively. The allele ranges for microsatellites UNH168 and G7A exclude O. niloticus (Ghana) as potential contributor to the ThaiChitralada strain. Genotyping for three microsatellites indicate overlap of alleles between Thai-Chitralada and O. niloticus (Egypt) and O. aureus, while O. mossambicus was not tested. Thus, our data based on mitochondrial and genomic analyses demonstrate that O. aureus, O. niloticus (Egypt), and O. mossambicus contributed to the formation of Thai-Chitralada. Thai-Chitralada can be used as a genetic resource for selection and adaptation to different geographical regions because of its diverse genetic background and desirable traits
Effects of Chlorella vulgaris on Immuno-Related Factors and their Expression in Penaeus vannamei
The aim of this 42-day study was to examine the effects of Chlorella vulgaris on immuno-related factors and their expression in Penaeus vannamei. Results showed that C. vulgaris significantly enhanced the activities of phenolic oxidase (PO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) in the serum and hepatopancreas of P. vannamei (p<0.05, p<0.01), increased the expression levels of PO, SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, and IMD genes in the serum of P. vannamei (p<0.05, p<0.01), and significantly increased the expression level of Toll receptor genes in the hepatopancreas of P. vannamei (p<0.05, p<0.01) and the expression level of IMD gene. In conclusion, C. vulgaris regulated the immune function of P. vannamei through the Toll receptor gene and the IMD pathways. Effects of Three Feeding Modes on the Gonad Development and Nutritional Quality of the Female Crab Portunus trituberculatus
Portunus trituberculatus is an important aquaculture species in China. Presently, three main feeding models are used for P. trituberculatus: complete feeding with commercial formulated feed (M1), mixed feeding with commercial formulated feed and trash fish (M2) and complete feeding with trash fish (M3). This study assessed the gonad development and nutritional quality of female P. trituberculatus under the three feeding models and provides a scientific basis for optimizing the feeding models of P. trituberculatus in the future. Overall, this study concluded that hypoplasia of gonads, and the biochemical, fatty acid, and amino acid composition in the gonads, hepatopancreas, and muscle of P. trituberculatus fed with the commercial formulated diet were poor. The mixed feeding with the commercial formulated diet and trash fish was an ideal feeding mode. This mode not only alleviates the dependence of the P. trituberculatus breeding industry on miscellaneous fish resources but also ensures the excellent quality of P. trituberculatus
