    Place Matters: A History of ASAO Meeting Sites

    Having attended the meetings of the Association for Social Anthropology (ASAO) off and on since 1969, and having served as the "Site Coordinator" for seven years, in this paper I take the long view of meeting site selection. The explicit and implicit criteria for a good meeting site, the politics of site selection, and even the locus of decision making have all changed over the years, and rightly so as, on the one hand, ASAO membership has grown to include scholars from the Pacific and Europe, and, on the other, the hotel and catering business has changed. Chances were taken; some turned out well, others did not. Lessons were learned so that, as the work to discover potential sites moved from being a responsibility of the whole membership to that of a committee and eventually of an individual, the process became more complex and demanding. Still, a good site sets the stage for the real work of ASAO: to provide a venue where Pacific Islanders, students, teachers, and researchers (not all mutually exclusive categories) can exchange information and perspectives in order to further Pacific Islands studies

    Lysine requirement of the spotted scat Scatophagus argus (Linaeus, 1766)

    The study aimed to determine the lysine requirement of young spotted scat Scatophagus argus (Linaeus, 1776) (average body weight = 10.7 g). The feeding trial was conducted for 8 weeks with 5 experimental diets which were isonitrogenous, isocaloric and isolipidic (35% CP, 18.3 MJ·kg-1, containing lysine levels as treatments containing equal dietary protein (35%) and lipid levels (5%) in 3 replicates. The lysine content was from 1.22 g to 1.94 g lysine·kg-1 dry diet (35 to 55 g·kg-1 CP) with an average content of 0.18 g lysine·kg-1 dry diet per treatment. Results showed that the growth rate, feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios were significantly highest at lysine level of 1.58 g·kg dry diet-1(45 g·kg-1 CP). Fish survival was not influenced by dietary lysine. Lysine requirement level for juvenile scat was estimated using quadratic regression of the percent weight gain (PWG) and specific growth rate (SGR) against dietary lysine level to have a mean value of 1.64 g·kg dry diet-1 (4.75 g·kg-1 CP)

    Variation of bacterial communities in black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) with different growth performances

    The intestinal bacteria of aquatic animals are closely related to their health and growth status. Penaeus monodon has become an important aquaculture species in the world because of its high nutritional value and market to demand. However, knowledge of bacterial communities on the growth phenotype of P. monodon is still limited. In this research, the bacterial community were comprehensively analyzed by using Miseq sequencing technology and bioinformatics. The results indicated that 29 phyla and 468 genera were identified by the taxonomic sequence. The data showed that the composition of microbial community was statistically different to fast-growing shrimps and slow-growing shrimps. There were significant differences in intestinal bacteria at the genus level. Lactococcus, Limnothrix, and Arthrospira had more abundance in the gut of fast-growing shrimps, which may promote the growth of P. monodon by affecting enzyme activities and improving immune response. Nautella, Shimia, Pseudoalteromonas, Aliiroseovarius, Albimonas, Tessaracoccus had more abundance in the gut of slow-growing shrimps. Nautella had the ability to express virulence by stimulated by environmental factors, thereby increasing the susceptibility to infection, which may have a negative impact on healthy growth of shrimps. Pseudoalteromonas, Aliiroseovarius and Shimia were related to the pathogenicity of shrimp, which may be an important factor affecting the growth of shrimp. Overall, this study demonstrates that the bacterial community associated with P. monodon was variation on different growth performance. These results can provide information on microbiome characteristics involved in the asynchronous growth of shrimp

    Genrefication: Reimagining the Library Space For Student Access and Independence

    Presentation slidesThis past summer, I took the leap and decided to genrefy all 2,000 books in my school library’s picture book collection. The discoveries were astounding as I started to rethink my library classification system through the eyes of my youngest students. Genrefication has been a hot topic in libraries in recent years as many more school libraries are redesigning their space to reflect human behavior. With the help of several other school librarians and U.H. Manoa’s Hui Dui student organization, we delved into a deeper discussion of understanding library organization, access, and independence while genrefying the collection. I am excited to continue the discussion as well as share the insights from this experience

    Papuan Malay – A Language of the Austronesian-Papuan Contact Zone

    This paper describes the contact features that Papuan Malay, an eastern Malay variety, situated in East Nusantara, the Austronesian-Papuan contact zone, displays under the influence of Papuan languages. This selection of features builds on previous studies that describe the different contact phenomena between Austronesian and non-Austronesian languages in East Nusantara. Four typical western Austronesian features that Papuan Malay is lacking or making only limited use of are examined in more detail: (1) the lack of a morphologically marked passive voice, (2) the lack of the clusivity distinction in personal pronouns, (3) the limited use of affixation, and (4) the limited use of the numeral-noun order. Also described in more detail are six typical Papuan features that have diffused to Papuan Malay: (1) the genitive-noun order rather than the noun-genitive order to express adnominal possession, (2) serial verb constructions, (3) clause chaining, and (4) tail-head linkage, as well as (5) the limited use of clause-final conjunctions, and (6) the optional use of the alienability distinction in nouns. This paper also briefly discusses whether the investigated features are also present in other eastern Malay varieties such as Ambon Malay, Maluku Malay and Manado Malay, and whether they are inherited from Proto-Austronesian, and more specifically from Proto-Malayic. By highlighting the unique features of Papuan Malay vis-à-vis the other East Nusantara Austronesian languages and placing the regional “adaptations” of Papuan Malay in a broader diachronic perspective, this paper also informs future research on Papuan Malay
