100th Anniversary of the Passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act 
   
 
Aloha mai kākou!  
 
Today, on July 9th 2021, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Hawaiian 
Homes Commission Act.  
 
Championed by Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole and signed into law by President Warren G. 
Harding on July 9th, 1921, the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act initiated the United States’ 
trust responsibility to the Native Hawaiian community with the establishment of a federal land 
trust of over 200,000 acres.  
 
The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act was intended to create a permanent homeland for native 
Hawaiians and aina hoʻopulapula - return the people to their lands - in order to support self-
sufficiency and self-determination. Today, the Act supplies almost 10,000 homestead leases 
providing housing to countless families across the State of Hawaiʻi and to this day, remains the 
most significant piece of federal legislation for the advancement of Native Hawaiians..   
 
Prince Kūhiō was the second Native Hawaiian to represent Hawaiʻi in Congress and it is my 
privilege to hold his former seat -- Kū i ke aka o nā kūpuna - standing in the shadow of the 
ancestors and carry on his legacy as a Native Hawaiian in Congress.  
 
It is a member’s ultimate privilege to be the voice of the makaʻāinana, the voice of Hawaiʻi’s 
people.  
 
Prince Kūhiō, revered by Native Hawaiians as Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana - a prince of the people -  
was a tenacious leader who used his voice to strengthen his beloved people and perpetuate the 
Hawaiian culture.  
 
As a delegate to the then Territory of Hawaiʻi with no power to vote, his ability to pass this 
landmark legislation proved his talent as a skilled statesman and a remarkable leader.  
 
The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act has faced many challenges both in its administration, its 
funding, as well as its implementation, but because of the support and dedication of Hawaiʻi’s 
former Senators and Representatives, and the State of Hawaii, Congress has been able to 
maintain the Act and ensure that it continues to serve its beneficiaries.  
 
Today, in Washington, one hundred years later, we celebrate the passage of the Hawaiian Homes 
Commission Act with reverence and deep appreciation for Kealii Makaainana Prince Kūhiō 
Kalanianaole.  
 
And we continue his work today. In Congress, I vow to continue these efforts to protect the 
beneficiaries of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act and carry on their family legacies.

many contributions to the lives of Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawaiʻi.
