HOT(Here-or-There) Library Orientation for Military Students and Veterans
Presentation slidesActive duty military and veteran students are more racially and ethnically diverse, than in previous generations. They have unique academic needs and challenges that can make for a difficult transition from a military to a less-structured university environment. While academic institutions have adapted quickly to enroll military students, library engagement efforts have been limited to traditional reference and instruction services delivered on-campus or military bases. As a way to seek a better understanding of the needs and perspectives of this diverse student population, the libraries at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa and Hawaiʻi Pacific University, have partnered to pilot an outreach program by hosting library orientations tailored to military students during the fall 2021. This outreach initiative is done in collaboration with military programs and student orientation stakeholders at both universities. The library orientations will be offered as a "Here or There" (HOT) blended synchronous learning setting, which was used at UH Manoa during COVID-19. The orientation will emulate Texas A&M University Libraries' "Orienting Student Veterans to the Library," strategy which uses an in-processing checklist format which seeks to complement the training of military personnel. We aim to facilitate military students' transition in their academic lives
Reimagining Information Literacy Approaches and Services: Considering Faculty Perspective
Presentation slidesThe pandemic required The Joseph F. Smith Library at BYU–Hawaii to reimagine information literacy approaches and services in order to better serve our faculty and students. This presentation will take participants through the outreach process we developed by tapping into information literacy resources our faculty already had in place and discovering which criteria they admitted to needing the most help with for the benefit of our learners. Through this presentation, participants will be able to apply steps from our outreach process used in informing and creating new information literacy services. Participants will also learn how to integrate best practices for promoting information literacy resources and in addressing faculty reluctance to adopting new materials into their course with ease by meeting them where they are, staying in a perpetual conversation together as lifelong learners, and tapping into what they already have in place as subject-matter experts in their unique disciplines
Expression analysis of three immune genes IL-8, IL-6 and IL-1β in the Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)
Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) are major immune-related genes that play important roles in the innate immune system of vertebrates. In this study, the expression levels of the three immune-related genes in eleven tissues of normal adult Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were examined using semi-quantitative RT-PCR at 13time points after challenge with Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results showed that the highest expression levels of the Japanese flounder IL-8 were detected at 12h in the spleen, 12h in the head kidney, and 24h in the liver after the challenge with LPS. Interestingly, the expression levels of IL-6 in the spleen and head kidney were highest at 48h. The liver had the highest expression level of IL-6 at 36h.The highest expression levels of IL-1β were detected at 3h in the spleen and 9h in the head kidney and liver. These results indicated that IL-8, IL-6, and IL-1β also played important roles in the immune response of the Japanese flounder at lower temperatures. The study provided a basis for further research on the immune mechanisms of IL-8, IL-6, IL-1β, and the production of recombinant IL-8, IL-6, or IL-1β used in Japanese flounder cultivation
Effects of taurine levels in feed on blood biochemical parameters and antioxidant indexes of Cynoglossus semilaevis and their responses to fishing stress
Cynoglossus semilaevis blood biochemical parameters and antioxidant indexes that respond to fishing stress were measured under the influence of different feed taurine levels. With taurine levels of 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%, 4 groups of test feeds were prepared. After 28 days of feeding. Serum was collected before stress and at 0, 4, 12, 24, 48, 96 h after stress to determine the content of total protein, cholesterol, GPT, GOT, nitric oxide, lysozyme, blood sugar and the activity of glutathione (GSH-PX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant capacity (AOC), the results show: Feeding a feed with a taurine content of 0.5% has a better inhibitory effect on cholesterol and GOT in Cynoglossus semilaevis after fishing stress, and has obvious anti-stress effect on lysozyme and protein. The 0.5% group had the lowest MDA content 12 h after fishing stress. The results suggested that feeding the feed with a taurine content of 0.5%, the Cynoglossus semilaevis blood biochemical parameters and antioxidant indexes to fishing stress has a better response

Effects of concentrated dephenolic cottonseed protein instead of fish meal on stress resistance of Penaeus monodon
To explore the effect of concentrated dephenolic cottonseed protein (CDCP) partly instead of fish meal on the non-specific immune of Penaeus monodon, we designed a single factor test to study the four types of non-specific immunity of P. monodon hepatopancreas after acute salinity stress. A total number of 5,400 P. monodon were selected with an initial body weight of 1.76±0.15g and randomly divide into 6 groups (3 replicates per group, 900 tails per replicate). Shrimp were feed with two protein level diets (Diet A and Diet B). After 8 weeks of feeding, P. monodon were randomly selected with an average weight of 14.71±1.06g in each feed group, and subjected to acute salinity stress of 10ppt and 20ppt after temporary rearing, and the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), Na+-K+-ATPase, cortisol and the content of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured. The results of the study showed that when the CDCP partially replaced fish meal of P. monodon diet, the hepatopancreas HSP70, and the contents of Na+-K+-ATPase and cortisol were significantly higher than those of the control group. In the acute salinity change, there was no significant difference in the survival rate of P. monodon at 48h under the two salinity stresses, and the four immune indexes showed different trends. The expression level of Cortisol was more prominent than that of HSP70, which could better reflect the stress degree of P. monodon. Most of the indicators showed a trend of rising and then falling and then rising compared with the original level, and the changes of the four indicators of hepatopancreas in the Diet B group were significantly higher than those in the Diet A group at most time point of the two salinities
Changes in juvenile sturgeon erythrocytes across age classes reflects evolutionary development
Erythrocytes are important for gas transport and exchange in animals and play an important role in maintaining normal functions of the body. The purpose of this study was to observe the changes in erythrocyte morphology during the development of juvenile sturgeon (Acipenser baeri ♀×Acipenser schrenckii ♂ hybrid F1) and to describe the relationship between erythrocyte morphology and development. We compared the erythrocyte morphology of juvenile sturgeon in three developmental stages. The results showed that the blood index of the sturgeon in different age classes was significantly different. The erythrocyte volume in the blood became smaller and the shape of erythrocytes changed from circular to elliptical. With the increase in age, the number of self-dividing erythrocytes, and the types and numbers of organelles in the erythrocytes, decreased. The results demonstrated that the morphology and the internal structure of erythrocytes develop to be more beneficial for gas transport reflecting the needs for juvenile sturgeon maintenance and environmental changes
