The leaf thermotolerance of nine tree species with varying geographic range sizes in a climate change-threatened hotspot

The Brazilian Atlantic Forest (AF) is recognized as one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots by global climate change. Here, we examined the leaf traits (leaf mass area, leaf thickness, and chlorophyll content) and leaf thermotolerance (T50 and TCrit) of seedlings of nine species of AF trees grown experimentally in order to foresee how extreme heat events will affect the forest’s regeneration and diversity. Based on geographic range size, the species were classified into three groups, namely, species with a restricted-range distribution (endemic to the AF), species with an intermediate-range distribution (throughout the Brazilian tropical territory), and species with a wide-range distribution (Latin America). We found that the restricted-range group did not present lower thermotolerance compared to intermediate- and wide-range species groups. Surprisingly, leaf mass area had no effect on thermotolerance indices, while chlorophyll content and leaf thickness positively influenced T50 and TCrit. Some species-specific responses to high-temperature stress deserve attention for tropical tree conservation, as is the case of Arapatiella psylophylla, a vulnerable endemic species with a very restricted-range distribution. Our results suggest that the species-specific leaf thermotolerance is an important criterion to be considered for tropical tree forest conservation in the context of global climate change.

    Get PDF
Myiasis is the infestation by fly larvae in vertebrates, including humans, which constitutes a public health problem. According to the biology of its agents, as well as the affected anatomic site, these infestations may present with differential diagnostic, therapeutic, control and prevention implications. In this regard, the correct identification of the etiologic agents is essential for the prevention of these parasitic diseases. At the same time, the identification of species of clinical interest is subject to the macroscopic analysis of larvae, dissection, mounting and microscopic analysis of taxonomically relevant characters. This work presents a synopsis of the biology and morphology of the main myiasis producing agents of clinical relevance in Costa Rica, and describes the appropriate techniques for sample collection, conservation and processing. Finally, a dichotomous key for the identification of the most relevant species in this context is presented.Universidad de Costa Rica/[ED-548]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[430-B5-735-21]/UCR/Costa RicaVicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias de la Salud::Centro de Investigación en Enfermedades Tropicales (CIET)Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Salud::Facultad de Microbiologí

Antarctic Oscillation: Its Influence on the Interannual Variability of Precipitation in the Indian Monsoon Region

This study investigated the influence of the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO) on the interannual variability of precipitation in the Indian monsoon region, aiming to address discrepancies in the existing literature. The degree of correlation between the AAO and moisture transport from the main oceanic sources supplying moisture to India, as well as precipitation over the region, was assessed using Pearson and partial correlation coefficients. The latter was employed to account for the potential confounding influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the dominant mode of climatic variability. Five datasets were used: moisture sinks derived from the FLEXPART model driven by ERA-Interim data (1980-2012), and precipitation data (1984-2016) from two surface rain gauge datasets (IITM-IMR and IMD4), ERA5 reanalysis, and PERSIANN-CDR. In addition, spatial patterns of climate teleconnections associated with the AAO were analyzed using a composite approach. Seasonal time series were constructed under two analytical frameworks: the first (scenario A1) was based on patterns linked to seasonal variations in solar radiation between hemispheres due to Earth’s orbital movement around the Sun, while the second (scenario A2) focused on patterns associated with the strengthening and weakening of the Antarctic polar vortex, considering the specific climatic characteristics of India. Among the key findings, scenario A2 yielded improved results compared to scenario A1. The strongest correlation emerged over the Peninsular region, where the AAO showed a significant in-phase relationship with precipitation during October, November, and December (OND), and an out-of-phase relationship with precipitation during January-February (JF), relative to the OND period. Another notable result was found for the Northwestern region, where a positive relationship was identified between the AAO during the June-September (JJAS) period and precipitation during the subsequent OND season. These findings align with the “coupled ocean-atmosphere bridge” mechanism, which involves anomalies in the high-pressure system over the Indian Ocean and its interaction with key components of the Indian monsoon system.Universidad de Costa Rica/[805-C0074]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-B9609]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-B9454]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-B7605]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-B6147]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-C5455]/UCR/Costa RicaVicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Básicas::Centro de Investigaciones Geofísicas (CIGEFI

Modeling Bulimia Nervosa in the Digital Age: The Role of Social Media

    Get PDF
Globalization has fundamentally reshaped societal dynamics, influencing how individuals interact and perceive themselves and others. One significant consequence is the evolving landscape of eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa (BN), which are increasingly driven not just by internal psychological factors but by broader sociocultural and digital contexts. While mathematical modeling has provided valuable insights, traditional frameworks often fall short in capturing the nuanced roles of social contagion, digital media, and adaptive behavior. This review synthesizes two decades of quantitative modeling efforts, including compartmental, stochastic, and delay-based approaches. We spotlight foundational work that conceptualizes BN as a socially transmissible condition and identify critical gaps, especially regarding the intensifying impact of social media. Drawing on behavioral epidemiology and the adaptive behavior framework by Fenichel et al., we advocate for a new generation of models that incorporate feedback mechanisms, content-driven influence functions, and dynamic network effects. This work outlines a roadmap for developing more realistic, data-informed models that can guide effective public health interventions in the digital era.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Básicas::Centro de Investigaciones en Matemáticas Puras y Aplicadas (CIMPA)Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Básicas::Facultad de Ciencias::Escuela de Matemátic

This thesis aims to update comprehensive knowledge regarding the management of acute extensor mechanism injuries of the fingers, hand, and forearm in adults. It involves an exhaustive review covering the anatomy and biomechanics of the extensor apparatus, the mechanisms and risk factors associated with these injuries, and the different anatomical, functional, and severity-based classifications available. It thoroughly discusses conservative and surgical treatments for each anatomical zone, emphasizing specific rehabilitation protocols, advanced surgical techniques, and emerging methods such as platelet-rich plasma and biological scaffolds to optimize functional recovery. The clinical significance of this research lies in the fact that extensor injuries, despite being common, may lead to severe sequelae such as joint stiffness and permanent deformities if not adequately managed. Through a critical analysis of the most recent and relevant literature, the study provides practical, updated recommendations for orthopedic and hand surgery specialists. Additionally, it highlights the importance of interdisciplinary and timely management to improve functional outcomes in affected patients, emphasizing the necessity for early rehabilitation protocols and personalized treatments according to the severity and anatomical location of the injury.Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Sistema de Estudios de Posgrado::Salud::Especialidad en Ortopedia y Traumatologí
