Antonio Gramsci. Estado, Hegemonía y Cesarismo
Embargado hasta 01-01-2100The modernity we find in Gramsci’s thought is reflected in his numerous
works, among them the Scritti politici, prior to the Quaderni dal carcere - a work in which,
through a fragmentary expository form, an organic thought is set out - and his Lettere
dal carcere, in which we find the most intimate Gramsci.
In order to understand Gramsci’s concept of “Caesarism”, tthis chapter focuses on
the analysis of Gramsci’s thought through a selection of fragments of works in which he
alludes to the concept of “State” and “Hegemony”.
Upon these premises I offera brief historiographical analysis of the use of the term
Caesarism in 19th century European essays, noting that in the Italian sphere the use of
the term, in political debate, tends to appear frequently as a result of Gramsci’s work.
He contributed greatly to the shaping of European social-political thought in the first
decades of the 20th century.
My starting points are both the idea of “hegemony” -closely related to civil society
and to the capacity of culture as a mechanism of radical social transformation- and the
idea of “state”, which must be, above all, the “ethical state”, since every class that exercises
power needs to assume interests that are not exactly its own
Reciprocal relationship between reactive oxygen species and cyclooxygenase-2 and vascular dysfunction in hypertension
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100Aims: This study evaluates a possible relationship between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2-derived products in conductance and resistance arteries from hypertensive animals. Angiotensin II (Ang II)-infused mice or spontaneously hypertensive rats treated with the NAD(P)H Oxidase inhibitor apocynin, the mitochondrion-targeted SOD2 mimetic Mito-TEMPO, the superoxide dismutase analog tempol, or the COX-2 inhibitor Celecoxib were used.
Results: Apocynin, Mito-TEMPO, and Celecoxib treatments prevented Ang II-induced hypertension, the increased vasoconstrictor responses to phenylephrine, and the reduced acetylcholine relaxation. The NOX-2 inhibitor gp91ds-tat, the NOX-1 inhibitor ML171, catalase, and the COX-2 inhibitor NS398 abolished the ex vivo effect of Ang II-enhancing phenylephrine responses. Antioxidant treatments diminished the increased vascular COX-2 expression, prostanoid production, and/or participation of COX-derived contractile prostanoids and thromboxane A(2) receptor (TP) in phenylephrine responses, observed in arteries from hypertensive models. The treatment with the COX-2 inhibitor normalized the increased ROS production (O(2)·(-) and H(2)O(2)), NAD(P)H Oxidase expression (NOX-1, NOX-4, and p22phox) and activity, MnSOD expression, and the participation of ROS in vascular responses in both hypertensive models. Apocynin and Mito-TEMPO also normalized these parameters of oxidative stress. Apocynin, Mito-TEMPO, and Celecoxib improved the diminished nitric oxide (NO) production and the modulation by NO of phenylephrine responses in the Ang II model.
Innovation: This study provides mechanistic evidence of circuitous relationship between COX-2 products and ROS in hypertension.
Conclusion: The excess of ROS from NAD(P)H Oxidase and/or mitochondria and the increased vascular COX-2/TP receptor axis act in concert to induce vascular dysfunction and hypertension
Nanostructured alkyl carboxylic acid-based restricted access solvents: Application to the combined microextraction and cleanup of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in mosses
Alkyl carboxylic acid-based nanostructured solvents, synthesized in mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water through self-assembly and coacervation, were proved to behave as restricted access liquids. Both physical and chemical mechanisms were found responsible for exclusion of macromolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides. The potential of these solvents for extracting small molecules from complex solid samples, without interference from large biomolecules, was here evaluated. For this purpose, they were applied to the extraction of 14 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from mosses prior to their separation by liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection (LC-FLD). Sample treatment involved the vortex shaking of 200 mg of moss with 200 μL of decanoic acid-based solvent for 5 min, subsequent centrifugation for 8 min and analysis of the extract by LC-FLD using external calibration. Proteins precipitated during extraction because of both the decrease of the dielectric constant of the solution caused by THF and the formation of macromolecular complexes with decanoic acid. Polysaccharides were not solubilized in the aqueous cavities of the solvent because of their size exclusion. In-house method validation was performed according to the recommendations of the European Commission Decision 202/657/EC. Method detection and quantification limits for the different PAHs were in the ranges 0.04–0.24 and 0.14–0.80 μg kg−1, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of different moss species collected in both polluted and unpolluted sites in the South of Spain. Recoveries were within the range 71–110%. The results obtained show that solvents with restricted access properties have the potential to expand the scope of application of restricted access materials to areas other than biological fluids because of their suitability to combine analyte isolation and sample cleanup of solid samples in a single step
Teaching Languages for Social and Cooperation Purposes: Using Didactic Media Accessibility in Foreign Language Education
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100In the heart of the 21st century, with audiovisual language surrounding people’s lives, it is necessary to make media content accessible for all, especially considering how such content can have a potential value to raise awareness on relevant social issues, such as gender-based violence.
This paper focuses on didactic media accessibility understood as the use of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) or audio description (AD) as pedagogical resources in foreign language education (Talaván et al., 2022); it is a field of study and teaching practice that has been receiving increasing attention during the past decade (Lertola, 2019). Within this context, the objective of the study presented herein is to assess the impact of transferable contents through didactic media accessibility, together with the enhancement of communicative L2 skills, and as boosters of sensibility towards gender violence. To that end, a lesson plan based on the short film The Mirror has been designed following the model proposed by Talaván (2013). This didactic proposal asks students to create SDH for the selected short film and to complete related tasks in pre-viewing, viewing and post-viewing phases. In such a context, students are expected learn to watch audiovisual products with 'gender on the agenda' (Goodman, 1996), which implies exploring the inequalities and the types of violence (Barry, 2017) within the pedagogical context.
An important number of students have completed this lesson plan within the TRADILEX Project (sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation ref. PID2019-107362GA-I00). A representative sample of learners’ SDH productions of The Mirror have been randomly selected to analyse the effects of such a didactic proposal from a qualitative perspective, based on observation and students’ comments derived from interviews from the long-term study undertaken within TRADILEX, where this lesson plan had been included.
The preliminary feedback in terms of raising awareness, not only on gender-based violence, but also on media accessibility, has been surprisingly positive, and the student’s productions reflect their understanding and empathy towards both issues.
All in all, we offer a proposal for interdisciplinarity, where gender studies, audiovisual translation in the form of media accessibility, and language learning come together within an ICT setting with the aim of raising learners’ awareness on gender-based violence and accessibility while they enhance their L2 communicative skills
