Avances en la sostenibilidad de empresas: del Pacto Verde Europeo a las directivas CSRD y de diligencia debida
La sostenibilidad se ha convertido en una de las prioridades de la Unión Europea, debido a la creciente conciencia de los desafíos medioambientales y sociales. Comprometida con un desarrollo que satisfaga las necesidades del presente sin comprometer la capacidad de las generaciones futuras para satisfacer sus propias necesidades, la UE está adoptando un enfoque integral para promover prácticas comerciales sostenibles, con regulaciones, incentivos y políticas que alienten a las empresas a considerar su impacto en el medio ambiente. El presente trabajo estudia el conjunto de medidas implementadas por la Unión Europea en favor de la transparencia informativa sobre cuestiones de sostenibilidad, paralelamente a la creciente importancia de la Responsabilidad Social Corporativa. Ante el fracaso de la voluntariedad en el seguimiento de las normas sobre sostenibilidad, la Comisión Europea ha optado por implementar un marco normativo armonizador, que redundará en las propias organizaciones y en los grupos de interés afectados.Sustainability has become an important priority of the European Union, due to growing awareness of environmental and social challenges. Committed to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, the EU is taking a comprehensive approach to promoting sustainable business practices, with regulations, incentives and policies that encourage companies to consider its impact on the environment. This paper studies the set of measures implemented by the European Union in favor of information transparency on sustainability issues, in parallel with the growing importance of Corporate Social Responsibility. Given the failure of voluntariness in following sustainability standards, the European Commission has chosen to implement a harmonizing regulatory framework, which will benefit the organizations themselves, as well as the affected stakeholders

Consumer trends in Spanish videogame designers students: the impact of retrogaming
Conocer la historia de los videojuegos es clave para la educación de los futuros diseñadores de videojuegos ya que las plataformas y los títulos más relevantes de las últimas décadas aún marcan las pautas de la industria contemporánea. La gene-ración que se está formando en las universidades no ha tenido acceso a esos videojuegos y, además, viven marcados por las tendencias digitales y las novedades. Encuestamos a 78 estudiantes de diseño en videojuegos de la Universidad de Burgos (España) para conocer sus hábitos de consumo en lo referente a videojuegos antiguos. Con los resulta-dos analizamos sus tendencias en cuanto a su experiencia de juego, destacando un mayor consumo de títulos de los últimos 10 años. Los estudiantes valoran la necesidad de aprender las mecánicas y estética de los títulos más emblemáticos para su futuro laboral en esta industria. Se desprende, por último, el impacto del retrogaming y el consumo de remakes al revelar a los emuladores como la mejor opción de acceso a los videojuegos antiguos.Knowledge of the history of video games is key to the education of future video game designers, as the most relevant platforms and titles of the past decades still set the guidelines for today's indus-try. The generation being educated at universities did not have access to these video games, and they also live in a world of digital trends and novelties. We surveyed 78 video game design students at the University of Burgos (Spain) to find out their con-sumption habits regarding old video games. The results analyse their trends in terms of their ga-ming experience, highlighting a greater consump-tion of titles from the last 10 years. The students emphasize the need to learn the mechanics and aesthetics of the most emblematic titles for their future work in the industry. The findings stress the impact of retrogaming, the consumption of re-makes, and reveal that emulators are the best op-tion for accessing old video games
Effects of HMB on Endurance Performance in a Healthy Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

J Strength Cond Res 38(4): e202–e210, 2024—β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) has been used extensively as a dietary supplement for athletes and physically active people. However, the ergogenic effect of HMB supplementation on endurance performance is still unclear. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) aimed to assess HMB supplementation on endurance performance and V̇O2 max. This SRMA followed PRISMA guidelines. Three electronic databases were searched (PubMed/Medline, Web of Science [WOS], and Scopus) from inception until April 3, 2023. In this SRMA, human experimental trials, controlled with a placebo group, assessing the effect of HMB supplementation on endurance performance in a healthy population were included. The quality of the studies was assessed by the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. The study protocol was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Review (PROSPERO): CRD42022341790. Eleven studies involving 279 participants met the inclusion criteria. The results displayed a significant improvement on endurance performance (pooled standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.58 [0.28–0.87]) and V̇O2 max (pooled SMD = 0.58 [0.21–0.95]) after HMB ingestion. Moreover, after the exclusion of the studies not evenly distributed around the base of the funnel plot, the results continued to be significantly positive in endurance performance (pooled SMD = 0.38 [0.22–0.53]) and V̇O2 max (pooled SMD = 0.25 [0.09–0.42]). In conclusion, HMB (3 g·d−1) ingestion during 2–12 weeks significantly improves endurance performance and V̇O2 max
Fuzzy Inference Systems to Fine-Tune a Local Eigenvector Image Smoothing Method
Image denoising is a fundamental research topic in colour image processing, analysis, and transmission. Noise is an inevitable byproduct of image acquisition and transmission, and its nature is intimately linked to the underlying processes that produce it. Gaussian noise is a particularly prevalent type of noise that necessitates effective removal while ensuring the preservation of the original image’s quality. This paper presents a colour image denoising framework that integrates fuzzy inference systems (FISs) with eigenvector analysis. This framework employs eigenvector analysis to extract relevant information from local image neighbourhoods. This information is subsequently fed into the FIS system which dynamically adjusts the intensity of the denoising process based on local characteristics. This approach recognizes that homogeneous areas may require less aggressive smoothing than detailed image regions. Images are converted from the RGB domain to an eigenvector-based space for smoothing and then converted back to the RGB domain. Towards automatic phytolith classification using feature extraction and combination strategies
Phytolith analysis is now an essential technique, both for the reconstruction of past environmental and climatic changes and for the study of anthropic and faunal plant use, in such disciplines as archaeology, paleoecology, paleonthology, and palynology. Currently, phytolith identification and categorisation involves time-consuming and tedious manual classification tasks that are not always error free. Automated phytolith classification will be key to the standardisation of phytolith identification processes, circumventing human error in the phytolith identification process. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented of different types of feature sets, feature combinations, and classifier combinations (through stacking), and their use for automatic phytolith classification, including state-of-the-art vision transformers and convolutional neural networks, techniques which have shown remarkable progress within different areas, including computer vision. In this research, twenty-two different sets of features (three based on shape, sixteen on appearance, and three on texture) and six classifier strategies (single and combined via stacking) were compared. The experimental results revealed that texture-related features offered no valuable information for classification purposes. However, classification tasks were efficiently performed with strategies based on shape and appearance features (extracted using deep neural networks). More specifically, the use of those features combined with a stacking strategy, achieved better results than any other features and feature-based strategies, with an accuracy value of 98.32%.This work is supported by the Junta de Castilla y León under project BU055P20 (JCyL/FEDER, UE) and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under project PID2020-119894GB-I00 co-financed through European Union FEDER funds
A comparative analysis of machine learning methods for display characterization
This paper explores the application of various machine-learning methods for characterizing displays of technologies LCD, OLED, and QLED to achieve accurate color reproduction. These models are formed from input (device-dependent RGB data) and output (device-independent XYZ coordinates) data obtained from three different displays. Training and test datasets are built using
data measured directly from the displays and corresponding
coordinates measured with a high-precision colorimeter. A key aspect of this research is the application fuzzy inference systems for building interpretable models. These models offer the advantage of not only achieving good performance in color reproduction, but also providing physical insights into the relationships between the
inputs and the resulting
outputs. This interpretability allows for a deeper understanding of the display’s behavior. Furthermore, we compare the performance of fuzzy models with other popular machine-learning approaches, including those based on neural networks and decision trees. By evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each method, we aim to identify the most effective approach for display characterization. The effectiveness of each method is assessed by its ability to accurately reproduce and display colors, as measured by the
visual error metric. Our findings indicate that the Fuzzy Modeling and Identification (FMID) method is particularly effective, allowing for an optimal balance between high accuracy and interpretability. Its competitive performance across all display types, combined with its valuable interpretability, provides insights for potential future calibration and optimization strategies. The results will shed light on whether machine learning methods offer an advantage over traditional physical models, particularly in scenarios with limited data. Involvement of multiple generations in management and internationalization of family firms in Spain: the moderating effect of SEW dimensions
Purpose
The study aims to analyze for the Spanish context the influence of the involvement of several generations in the firm's management on family firm internationalization. The authors also respond to the call in the literature to consider the influence of SEW on family firm internationalizations by analyzing the moderating effect of the importance family managers attach to each of the socioemotional wealth (SEW) dimensions – enrichment, continuity and prominence on the relationship between multiple generations involved in management and family firm internationalization.
Design/methodology/approach
The information was obtained by means of a questionnaire sent to the CEOs of family businesses. The authors’ sample consists of 147 Spanish family firms.
Findings
The authors find that the involvement of multiple generations in management is positively related to the internationalization of family firms. Furthermore, the importance that family CEOs attribute to the enrichment dimension of SEW reduces the intensity of the effect of the involvement of several generations in management on family firm internationalization.
Originality/value
The authors’ results, for the Spanish context, complement previous studies (Meneses et al., 2014) showing that the entry of new generations into the family business opens a window of opportunity for the internationalization of the family business. Furthermore, their study shows that the diverse family objectives by CEOs can have different, even conflicting effects on the internationalization decision. These results suggest that the enrichment dimension, which focuses on the short-term family goals may restrain the internationalization of the family business. However, continuity and prominence dimensions, which are related with long term family objectives and jointly enable the fulfillment of nonfamily stakeholders’ objectives, do not influence the internationalization of the family firms analyzed.This research was supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación research grant number PID2020-120288GB-I00
