Deskilling, Adaptation and Resilience: Understanding and guidance for the career development of migrant women

    No full text
Migrant women’s career guidance can be compromised by the intricate interplay of migration experiences, gender-based inequalities, stereotypes, and the systemic reinforcement of feminized professional sectors like caregiving and domestic work. This study seeks to enhance guidance services in socio-educational centers by comprehending the specific needs of migrant women and advocating for a redefinition of key competencies. A multiple case study was conducted involving 21 interviews: 10 with migrant women and 11 with socio-educational and labor guidance professionals. Field restitution feedback was incorporated to enhance research credibility. The results reveal three emerging categories: the planning of the migration process, the situated personal context, and the uniqueness of the career project construction. Professional expectations, often romanticized in the destination, impact the mobilization of efforts to access resources, requiring perseverance and resilience to meet rights and responsibilities. Inequality and deskilling present challenges that requireeffective responses for professional adaptability. Decision-making is temporally redefined and anchored in assumed family and gender roles, requiring the development of a supportive, empathetic, and sustained socio-educational relationship to foster self-determination. This study highlights the importance of promoting resilience while addressing systemic dysfunctions to ensure equitable conditions for career development

Enhanced Monte Carlo-Based Uncertainty Quantification in Electronic Circuits

    No full text
The determination of measurement uncertainty is of paramount importance in defining the range of values assigned to a given response variable. In electronic circuits, this is a challenging task that still needs further development. Difficulties associated with repeated measurements and the inherent variability of components make it difficult to determine uncertainty unless a large number of measurements are taken, which increases costs. Furthermore, due to the strong nonlinear characteristics of most electronic circuits and the difficulty in determining a differentiable expression, it is not feasible to apply uncertainty propagation. An alternative for modeling uncertainty is the Monte Carlo method, as proposed by the Guide for the Expression of Measurement Uncertainty (GUM and GUM-S1). However, when the probability distribution of the response variables significantly deviates from normal, the GUM-S1 method may lead to inaccurate results. This study proposes a new Monte Carlo-based method to quantify measurement uncertainty in electronic circuits and includes a comparative study of GUM, GUM-S1, and the proposed method. It is shown that uncertainty can be determined more accurately with the proposed method when normality cannot be assumed. The proposed method is applied to two analog circuits: a Sallen-Key filter and a low-signal amplifier.Open access funding provided by FEDER European Funds and the Junta de Castilla y León under the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3) of Castilla y León 2021-2027. Combined creatine and HMB co-supplementation improves functional strength independent of muscle mass in physically active older adults: a randomized crossover trial

    No full text
Sarcopenia is a major contributor to frailty and functional decline among older adults. Combining exercise with nutritional strategies such as creatine monohydrate (CRE) and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation may help to preserve strength and independence. To evaluate the effects of 6-week CRE + HMB supplementation combined with an integral physical conditioning (IPC) program on functional strength and body composition in physically active older adults. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 30 older adults (20 men, 10 women; ≥ 60 years) completed two 6-week intervention periods (CRE + HMB or placebo) separated by a 3-week washout. The IPC program performed in both conditions consisted of four supervised weekly sessions combining strength, power, multicomponent circuits, high-intensity interval and moderate intensity continuous training), performed at 40–100% training heart rate (THR) and 20–90% one-repetition maximum (1RM) and structured as warm-up, main part and cooldown. Functional strength and body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis) were assessed pre- and post-intervention, respectively. Significant time × group interactions were observed for fat mass, fat-free mass, total muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, appendicular skeletal muscle mass, muscle mass index, skeletal muscle index and ALM/BMI (all p < 0.05). The CRE + HMB group showed reductions in fat mass and body fat percentage, with slight numerical increases in muscle parameters, whereas the placebo group exhibited opposite trends. However, within-group changes were not statistically significant. In contrast, CRE + HMB significantly improved multiple functional strength outcomes, including leg/back strength, arm flexion strength, upper-body endurance (dumbbell flexion, push-ups, isometric hold) and core endurance (crunches). Regression analyses suggested that these improvements were largely independent of changes in muscle mass, supporting a potential neuromuscular mechanism. Six weeks of CRE + HMB supplementation combined with IPC enhanced functional strength and endurance in active older adults, largely independent of changes in muscle mass. This combined approach represents a promising strategy for preserving functional capacity and promoting healthy ageing.Open access funding provided by FEDER European Funds and the Junta de Castilla y León under the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3) of Castilla y León 2021-2027. The role of national corruption in the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate reputation: Evidence from Europe

    No full text
National corruption can affect the value of the signals that stakeholders use to build expectations about a firm's ability to meet their interests and can thus influence the process of corporate reputation building. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance is an important signal for stakeholders to build such expectations. Drawing on signaling and institutional theories, this study examines how national corruption moderates the relationship between CSR performance and corporate reputation based on the coexistence of institutional adaptation processes (institutional isomorphism) and differentiating strategies (signaling effect) across firms. Panel estimators were applied to a sample of 586 observations from 127 companies across eight European countries from 2011 to 2016. The results confirm that CSR performance affects corporate reputation and reveal that, in countries with higher levels of corruption, CSR has a greater effect on corporate reputation. These findings provide further evidence of the moderating effect of contextual factors on the process through which stakeholders build expectations about firms.Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain. Estimation of ultimate tensile strength of tubular materials using Ring Hoop Tension Test with cylindrical pins

    No full text
Mechanical characterization of metallic pipes is essential for assessing their structural integrity in industrial applications. The Ring Hoop Tension Test (RHTT) offers a simpler alternative to traditional methods for determining hoop strength, with two primary variants: the D-shaped pin configuration, which requires custom tooling for each pipe geometry, and the cylindrical pin system, which simplifies testing but introduces bending stresses. While the cylindrical pin method reduces friction-related uncertainties, its applicability for estimating ultimate tensile strength (UTS) had not been explored. This study develops a correlation between the minimum slope of the RHTT load–displacement curve and UTS in the hoop direction, specifically for cylindrical pins. A dual approach combining finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental validation was employed. Numerical simulations examined the influence of pipe slenderness, pin diameter, and strain-hardening behavior, leading to an empirical model. Experimental tests on aluminum 6061-T6 pipes confirmed the method’s accuracy, with deviations below 3 % compared to standard tensile tests. The results highlight the impact of geometric factors, particularly the diameter-to-thickness ratio, and introduce a pin-size correction factor to refine the methodology. This work demonstrates that RHTT with cylindrical pins can effectively estimate UTS, offering a practical and reliable alternative to conventional methods

Herein we present a novel one-pot methodology for the synthesis of enantioenriched 2H-pyrrolespirosuccinimides by copper-catalyzed reactions on Ugi adducts derived from enantiopure α-alkylbenzyl amines through a chirality transfer process. We have proposed a mechanism, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, where a hydrogen radical-shuttle (HRS) process explains the chemical and stereochemical results. This work demonstrates the efficient stereoselective synthesis of structurally unique, highly functionalized nitrogen heterocyclic systems using simple protocols and affordable starting materials. We thank funding from MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF, UE (grants PID2020-117610RB−I00 and PID2023-151848OB−I00) and Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León and ERDF, UE (Project BU067P20).
