    No full text
Nowadays, an increasing number of postgraduate studies in language and literature teaching are considering the possibility of moving abroad to teach their mother tongue or their first foreign language. For this purpose, the programs organized by governmental bodies in the field of culture and education serve as an incentive and economic stimulus. In fact, in the case of Spain, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training offered 815 places in the call for Spanish language assistants abroad for the academic year 2020-2021. The network of countries participating in this program included Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, United States, Russia, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland

Diversity and agency in evolutionary friezes for teaching prehistory. An analysis based on Secondary Education Geography and History textbooks

    No full text
Evolutionary friezes are a fundamental teaching resource in the teaching and learning of human evolution, especially in Secondary Education. However, the graphic model of representation of hominins and hominins in the evolutionary process still responds to strong stereotypes and biases inherited from the nineteenth-century archaeological discourse, showing a unidirectional model that limits the human condition of diversity. The work analyzes a sample of 14 evolutionary friezes from textbooks attached to the LOE, LOMCE and LOMLOE. The objective is to know the models of human representation, their diversity, as well as biases, stereotypes and errors. A descriptive content analysis with a mixed approach is followed and an ad hoc categorical instrument is built. The results report the predominance of an iconographic model that limits the condition of human diversity with a tendency towards a finalistic evolution directed towards the young, white and western man

    No full text
In keeping with current theories of migration and acculturation (Berry 1995; Berry and Hou 2016), this article seeks to identify the different stages of acculturation in relation to the concept of “belonging” outlined by Nira Yuval Davis (2006) in three short stories written in English by Italian Canadian female authors: Delia de Santis, Caterina Edwards, and Licia Canton. These emerging, first generation writers tend to concentrate on the cultural connections between Italy and Canada (Caporale-Bizzini 2018), and thus provide a meaningful contribution to both worlds. The varying nature of the protagonists’ bonding with their country of origin and that of their settlement will reveal how these relations affect the performative agency of fictional female Italian immigrants in Canada.

Across the Douro Basin, in Spain, there are a number of remarkable uillae that have been documented both for their magnificent architecture and for the beauty of their mosaics. The Roman Villa of Almenara de Adaja-Puras, in the province of Valladolid, is one of them. Discovered and partially excavated in the first half of the 20th century, it was not until the beginning of the following century that it was completely excavated and, therefore, its decorative designs for floors and walls were uncovered. The most notable features are the good state of preservation of the mosaic floors -all of them are almost entirely preserved-, their distribution throughout the house, the presence of other types of flooring -opus signinum and mortar-, and also, the existence of a notable group of mural paintings, some of them preserved in situ, while others recovered from debris on pavements. Based on all these remains, the functionality of each room in the house is analysed in its entirety, taking into account the type of floor, the decorative content of the mosaics and the painted decoration of the walls. Finally, markings on the mosaics provide evidence of the internal circulation in the house.

    No full text
For over a decade, circular economy action plans have been incorporated into the European Union’s strategies aimed at consolidating a climate-neutral, sustainable, resource-efficient, and competitive economic model, while strengthening energy autonomy and security. At present, the transition towards a circular economy remains a priority on the EU legislative agenda, also serving to reduce reliance on imported raw materials in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical context. The transformation of production and consumption systems in line with circularity principles requires specific actions across multiple public policy areas. Within this framework, public procurement emerges as a strategic instrument to foster such a transition, not only due to its exemplary function but also because of its capacity to stimulate a developing market for goods and services consistent with the principles of the circular economy.

Effects of Whey Protein, Carbohydrate, and Fibre Combination on Health Indicators: A Systematic Review

    No full text
This systematic review has synthesised the available evidence on healthy indicators of whey protein combined with carbohydrates and fibre intake in adults, providing a comprehensive overview of existing research. For this purpose, a comprehensive search was performed across the following databases to retrieve all relevant studies (n = 21; Kappa = 0.758): Scopus®, EBSCOhost, and PubMed®. The studies included, which involved both athletic and non-athletic participants, argue that the intake of whey protein and carbohydrates has a positive impact on the average blood glucose and insulin response, while others have found no significant effects. When projecting the research toward the health benefits of whey protein and fibre consumption, the divergence decreased. Researchers demonstrate that the whey-protein-with-fibre combination intake improves glycemic control more effectively than consuming whey protein or carbohydrate alone. One potential approach is the balance by incorporating fibre, which may help mitigate adverse effects, contributing to reducing hepatic toxicity, caused by whey protein intake, due to dietary fibre’s ability to promote partial nutrient absorption. These findings support the use of whey protein and fibre combination as an efficient dietary approach to improved functional food formulations designed for specific health outcomes such as supporting chronic disease prevention and health-promoting diets worldwide. Nevertheless, there are a few limitations in the research, such as the heterogeneity of population characteristics, participants’ diet, and lifestyle

Archaeomagnetic Tools Applied to the Study of Middle Palaeolithic Hearths: The Level R (ca. 60 ka BP) at Abric Romaní (NE Iberian Peninsula)

    No full text
Due to its long occupation throughout the Middle Palaeolithic and the abundance of its pyrotechnological evidence, the Abric Romaní rockshelter (Capellades, Barcelona) provides an ideal setting for studying Neanderthal fire use. We conducted an archaeomagnetic study of four hearths from Level R (ca. 60 ky BP). Rock magnetism experiments, including hysteresis loops, and backfield, isothermal remanent magnetisation acquisition and thermo-magnetic curves, were conducted on three specimens per hearth to investigate their magnetic mineralogy. To explore the raw material’s ability to become magnetised, we performed a laboratory-induced partial thermo-remanent magnetisation acquisition in a 50μT field at various increasing temperatures. Our results indicate that the material is predominantly diamagnetic, but contains a small proportion of low coercivity magnetic minerals, likely magnetite. A total of 106 oriented specimens underwent progressive thermal demagnetisation up to 580 °C. Directional results at the specimen level show either a single component or two: one between 250 and 420 °C and another between 300 and 550 °C. Three out of the four hearths yielded normal-polarity archaeomagnetic directions, within the range of secular variation expected for their estimated age; the poor quality of the data prevented any analysis of the remaining structure. These findings suggest that, despite the hearths’ low content in ferromagnetic minerals, they are able to acquire a thermal or thermochemical-remanent magnetisation, accurately recording the Earth’s magnetic field though their high-temperature component. The low-temperature component may reflect a subsequent thermo-chemical or chemical alteration that partially remagnetised the original direction. This work was funded by the FPU20/03664 contract granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the project PID2019105796GB-I00 of the Agencia Estatal de Investigación, Junta de Castilla y León, the European Regional Development Fund (project BU037P23), and Fundación PALARQ.
