Women directors, educational background and firm value of Spanish listed companies

    No full text
Purpose – This study aims to evaluate changes in the presence of women on Spanish boards after the Unified Good Governance Code of Listed Companies (2006) and the Organic Law 3/2007 on Gender Equality, and this study compares the educational background of women and men directors. Also, this study analyses the influence of gender diversity and educational background of women directors on economic performance, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and, ultimately, firm value. In addition, this study explores the differences in board gender composition and its effect on firm value during the crisis and post-crisis periods. Finally, this study analyses the different influence of women directors depending on their typology. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a system of structural equations and a sample of 4,101 directors of 30 Spanish companies listed on IBEX-35 over 2008–2017. Findings – The results show that women’s presence on boards has grown since 2008, and they have higher educational background than men. This study finds that women directors improve economic performance and CSR, though results are non-significant for firm value. Women directors with a bachelor’s or master’s degree increase economic and social performance but reduce firm value. Women directors with business or industry-related studies positively influence CSR but business specialisation negatively affects economic performance and firm value. Originality/value – This study analyses the direct and indirect effect of women directors on firm value, the influence of their educational background and the potential differences arising from the economic situation (crisis) and the type of board position they hold

Comunicación presentada en: XII Congreso Nacional y III Internacional de Ingeniería Termodinámica (12 CNIT), June 19- July 1, Madrid (Spain)Daylighting is a design concept of buildings recognized as a key strategy in reducing the energy consumption and improving visual comfort and well being of their occupants. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), artificial lighting makes up 14% of electrical consumption in the European Union and 19% worldwide. In addition to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, it has been demonstrated that daylighting has positive effects on human health and productivity. Energy standards strongly recommend incorporating daylighting strategies into building design. However, daylighting design is complex due to its changing nature. Likewise improving the occupants' life, daylight implementation is also related to technical and architectural solutions such as heating and cooling. Therefore, it is necessary balancing the positive health effects and energy savings in artificial lighting with the the possible thermal and visual discomfort caused by excessive sunlight penetrations and glare.Financial support provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation (Ref. Symmetry resolved entanglement of excited states in quantum field theory. Part I. Free theories, twist fields and qubits

    No full text
The excess entanglement resulting from exciting a finite number of quasiparticles above the ground state of a free integrable quantum field theory has been investigated quite extensively in the literature. It has been found that it takes a very simple form, depending only on the number of excitations and their statistics. There is now mounting evidence that such formulae also apply to interacting and even higher-dimensional quantum theories. In this paper we study the entanglement content of such zero-density excited states focusing on the symmetry resolved entanglement, that is on 1+1D quantum field theories that possess an internal symmetry. The ratio of charged moments between the excited and grounds states, from which the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy can be obtained, takes a very simple and universal form, which in addition to the number and statistics of the excitations, now depends also on the symmetry charge. Using form factor techniques, we obtain both the ratio of moments and the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in complex free theories which possess U(1) symmetry. The same formulae are found for simple qubit states

Early and Middle Pleistocene hominins from Atapuerca (Spain) show differences in dental developmental patterns

    No full text
The Bayesian statistical approach considers teeth as forming a developmental module, as opposed to a tooth-by-tooth analysis. This approach has been employed to analyze Upper Pleistocene hominins, including Neandertals and some anatomically modern humans, but never earlier populations. Here, we show its application on five hominins from the TD6.2 level of the Gran Dolina site (Homo antecessor, Early Pleistocene) and the Sima de los Huesos site (Middle Pleistocene) of the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, northern Spain). Our results show an advanced development of the third molars in both populations with respect to modern Homo sapiens. In addition, the Sima de los Huesos hominins differ from H. sapiens and H. antecessor in the relatively advanced development of their second molar. The relative mineralization of I1/M1 in H. antecessor appears to be similar to that of modern humans, as opposed to that of Neandertals, which appear to be unique. These observations, combined with reduced enamel formation times and the advanced development of the third molars, appear to indicate a shorter ontogenetic period in the hominins from Gran Dolina and Sima de los Huesos in comparison to modern human average.

Prefabricated companies manufacture large volumes of concrete applied to pieces of high performance and quality, but there are also rejections of pieces, remnants of kneaded whose reuse by crushing allows obtaining a very good quality aggregate that can be incorporated into the concretes that make up the prefabricated parts. The RAC is characterized and part of the dosages used by the prefabricated company (control concrete HR45 0%) a new concrete with recycled aggregate of resistance HR-45-100% replacing the natural aggregate with a 100% RAC. In the laboratory tests are carried out to determine its mechanical properties, and then, in a next phase, test its properties against durability. The analysis is completed with the verification at the industrial level, in the factory itself, of the aspects described above. Linear elements of section 15x25 and length 1.50 m are made. made with the concrete object of the present study and checking its behavior to bending, cutting and deferred deformation. The results of the new concrete with RAC are satisfactory compared to the control concrete, which is an example of extensible sustainability for the prefabrication sector. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI].
