    Adjustable Gel Texture of Recovered Crude Agar Induced by Pressurized Hot Water Treatment of Gelidium sesquipedale Industry Waste Stream: An RSM Analysis

    A significant amount of bioactive compound-rich solid waste is released during the industrial phycocolloid-centric extraction of Gelidium sesquipedale. The impact of mild pressurized hot water extraction on repurposing this waste for the recovery of agar with an adjustable gel texture is investigated. A two-factor interaction response surface model assessed the influences of the operating temperatures (80 to 130 °C), times (45 and 150 min), pressures (1 to 70 bar), and algae concentrations (3 to 10% (w:v)). At a temperature of 100 °C, a pressure of 10.13 bar, a recovery time of 45 min, and a 10% algae concentration, the working parameters were considered ideal (w:v). Agar with a hardness of 431.6 g, an adhesiveness of −13.14 g.s−1, a springiness of 0.94, a cohesiveness of 0.63, and a gumminess of 274.46 g was produced under these conditions. A combined desirability of 0.78 was obtained for the exposed technology that retrieved gels with a minimum agar yield of 10% and thermal hysteresis between 39 ± 1 and 52 ± 0.5 °C.     El presente trabajo de fin de grado se fundamenta en la necesidad de desarrollar en el alumnado el análisis de la realidad y el pensamiento crítico de los mismos. A continuación, se presenta una intervención didáctica implementada en un aula 3º de educación infantil, la cual se basa en la metodología indagatoria como herramienta de mejora del aprendizaje de las ciencias naturales, así como el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico del alumnado de dicha etapa. Se recogen, además de la propuesta de intervención y los resultados obtenidos, aspectos teóricos que ponen de manifiesto los beneficios sobre el desarrollo dichas capacidades al implementar la metodología indagatoria en el aula.This end-of-grade project, it is based on the need to develop in students the analysis of reality and their critical thinking. Therefore, a didactic intervention is presented, implemented in a classroom of 3rd grade of early childhood education. On which is based, on the investigative methodology as a means to improve the learning of natural sciences, as well as the development of critical thinking of the students of that age, 5-6 years old. In addition, to the intervention proposal and the results obtained, theoretical aspects have been found that highlight the benefits on the development of students when they implement the investigative methodology

    Wearable Devices in Diving: Scoping Review

    Background: Wearables and their benefits for the safety and well-being of users have been widely studied and have had an enormous impact on the general development of these kinds of devices. Yet, the extent of research into the use and impact of wearable devices in the underwater environment is comparatively low. In the past 15 years, there has been an increased interest in research into wearables that are used underwater, as the use of such wearables has steadily grown over time. However, there has so far been no clear indication in the literature about the direction in which efforts for the design and construction of underwater wearable devices are developing. Therefore, the analysis presented in this scoping review establishes a good and powerful basis for the further development and orientation of current underwater wearables within the field. Objective: In this scoping review, we targeted wearable devices for underwater use to make a comprehensive map of their capabilities and features and discuss the general direction of the development of underwater wearables and the orientation of research into novel prototypes of these kinds of devices. Methods: In September 2021, we conducted an extensive search for existing literature on 4 databases and for grey literature to identify developed prototypes and early-stage products that were described and tested in water, could be worn and interacted with (eg, displays, buttons, etc), and were fully functional without external equipment. The studies were written in English, came from peer-reviewed academic sources, and were published between 2005 and 2021. We reviewed each title and abstract. The data extraction process was carried out by one author and verified by another author. Results: In total, 36 relevant studies were included. Among these, 4 different categories were identified; 18 studies dealt primarily with safety devices, 9 dealt with underwater communication devices, 7 dealt with head-up displays, and 2 dealt with underwater human-computer interaction approaches. Although the safety devices seemed to have gained the most interest at the time of this study, a clear trend toward underwater communication wearables was identified. Conclusions: This review sought to provide a first insight into the possibilities and challenges of the technologies that have been used in and for wearable devices that are meant for use in the underwater environment. Among these, underwater communication technologies have had the most significant influence on future developments. Moreover, a topic that has not received enough attention but should be further addressed is human-computer interaction. By developing underwater wearables that cover 2 or more of the technology categories that we identified, the extent of the benefits of such devices can be significantly increased in the future

    Influence of noise level and seniority in the workplace on the SAL, ELI and percentage of hearing loss indices in the diagnosis and prevention of hearing loss in the working population

    Introduction: This research relates the most important work-related factors affecting the development of hearing loss to the main methods used as medical assessment criteria in the diagnosis of occupational deafness. These criteria are the Speech Average Loss Index (SAL), the Early Loss Index (ELI) and the Percentage of Hearing Loss, and are applied to data obtained from audiograms performed on workers in occupational medical examinations. Method: Depending on the assessment method selected, these often return different results in grading an individual's hearing status and predicting how it will evolve. To address this problem, medical examinations (including audiograms) were carried out on a heterogeneous sample of 1,418 workers in Spain, from which demographic or personal data (gender, age, etc.), occupational data (noise level to which each individual is exposed, etc.) and other non-work-related factors (exposure to noise outside work, family history, etc.) were also gathered. Using Bayesian Networks, the conditional probability of an individual developing hearing loss was obtained taking into account all these factors and, specifically, noise level and length of service in the workplace. Sensitivity analyses were also carried out using the three scales (SAL, ELI and Percentage Hearing Loss Index), proving their suitability as tools the diagnosis and prediction of deafness. These networks were validated under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (ROC) criterion and in particular by the Area Under the Curve (AUC). Results: The results show that all three methods are deficient in so far as detecting preventive hearing problems related to noise in most workplaces. Conclusions: The most restrictive methods for detecting possible cases of deafness are the SAL index and the Percentage Loss Index. The ELI index is the least restrictive of the three methods, but it is not able to discriminate the causes of hearing problems in an individual caused by exposure to noise, either by its intensity level or by the time of exposure to noise. Practical Applications: The use of the three methods in the field of occupational risk prevention is extremely limited and it seems reasonable to think that there is a need for the construction of new scales to correct or improve the existing ones

    Validation of slag-binder fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete with slag aggregate under field conditions: Durability and real strength development

    The environmental conditions to which a concrete may be exposed will condition its real range of use. Thus, concrete behavior must, at all times, be verified under a wide variety of environmental conditions, in order to ensure its real applicability. In this study, the real strength development and durability behavior of a fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete is analyzed. This particular concrete incorporates 100% coarse (4/12 mm) and fine (0/4 mm) Electric Arc Furnace Slag (EAFS) as aggregate, as well as limestone fines as aggregate powder (0/1.18 mm). Furthermore, Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) was also added as binder. Four mixtures with and without either metallic or synthetic fibers, and different GGBFS contents were designed. Real strength development was evaluated in all the mixes by comparing the strength development of both cores extracted from full-scale beams and wet-cured laboratory specimens. The durability behavior was analyzed by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), freeze/thaw, moist/dry, sulfate-attack, chloride-penetration, carbonation, and SO2-attack tests. On the one hand, the long-term mechanical properties of the cores (real conditions) were similar to the properties of the specimens cured in a moist chamber for 90 days in all the mixes. On the other, the increase in water content when adding fibers to maintain flowability, as well as the addition of GGBFS, resulted in an increase in MIP porosity. Therefore, the use of fibers, both metallic and synthetic, slightly worsened the durability behavior of the concrete, facilitating the entry of aggressive external agents. Nevertheless, the increased flexibility of the cementitious matrix when adding GGBFS was beneficial against moist/dry and sulfate-attack phenomena, despite the increase in porosity.
