Scotland’s road to IndyRef2, between two Unions

    No full text
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, has announced a second independence referendum will be held on 19 October 2023. Given the UK government’s refusal to negotiate a new independence referendum, the call for this referendum, popularly known as IndyRef2, is shrouded in great uncertainty. The aim of this article is to assess the chances of this second Scottish independence referendum finally taking place. To do so, it will begin by taking a historical overview of the different referendums that have been held in this territory, analysing their consequences and how their given results have influenced the strategies of certain political parties (specifically, the Scottish National Party). Subsequently, the arguments for and against holding a second independence referendum for Scotland will be presented, and the article will finish by assessing the real possibilities of IndyRef2 being held on the date planned by the Scottish authorities. This investigation concludes by anticipating that, over the next few years, the Scottish territorial question will continue to be a key element in the internal politics of the United Kingdom.

Photographic creation depends on pictures that exist in the inmediacy of digital media and its connectivity. New devices and digital paradigm have overcome traditional print media in order to adapt themselves to SMPs (Social Media Platforms), where every picture becomes a self-portrait of themselves. This study focuses on the portrait process conditioned by that type of construction, taking into account pictures from Kito Muñoz on Instagram -made for himself or for any brand-. Kito's photography on the Net is analyzed to know whether its objective is to achieve a documentary or advertising purpose

Psychometric properties of the academic procrastination scale in Spanish university students

Procrastination in academic activities is common amongst university students, and has negative consequences for their personal as well as academic development. As a result, there is a need for valid –yet at the same time brief and clear-cut– measurement tools that enable the specific procrastinating behaviour of university students to be measured. This work explores in depth the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Academic Procrastination Scale, a widely used brief tool in secondary and higher education in the Spanish speaking world. The scale was applied to a total of 1734 university students, together with the Procrastination Assessment Scale-Students (PASS), the Unintentional Procrastination Scale (UPS) and the Active Procrastination Scale (APS). Factor analyses indicate the best fit is a structure involving four interrelated factors (task aversion, poor time management, low emotional and motivational self-control, and risk assumption) compared to other proposed models. The model presents factorial invariance between men and women, and adequate convergent validity. We discuss the implications of using this scale in higher education, since differentiating the four factors might help to identify different support measures depending on university student needs.

Characterisation of the Stromal Microenvironment in Lobular Breast Cancer

nvasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common histological subtype of breast cancer, and it exhibits a number of clinico-pathological characteristics distinct from the more common invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). We set out to identify alterations in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of ILC. We used laser-capture microdissection to separate tumor epithelium from stroma in 23 ER+ ILC primary tumors. Gene expression analysis identified 45 genes involved in regulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) that were enriched in the non-immune stroma of ILC, but not in non-immune stroma from ER+ IDC or normal breast. Of these, 10 were expressed in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and were increased in ILC compared to IDC in bulk gene expression datasets, with PAPPA and TIMP2 being associated with better survival in ILC but not IDC. PAPPA, a gene involved in IGF-1 signaling, was the most enriched in the stroma compared to the tumor epithelial compartment in ILC. Analysis of PAPPA- and IGF1-associated genes identified a paracrine signaling pathway, and active PAPP-A was shown to be secreted from primary CAFs. This is the first study to demonstrate molecular differences in the TME between ILC and IDC identifying differences in matrix organization and growth factor signaling pathways. This work was funded by Cancer Research UK (C157/A23219 to LGC; C157/A29279 to E.B.) and the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre Award (C157/A18075), an Endeavour Scholarship (734/2018/878 to Z.M.) and Programme Grants from Breast Cancer Now as part of Programme Funding to the Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre (S.H. and R.N.). Construction Accidents in Spain: Implications for an Aging Workforce

    No full text
Construction workers are getting older. In the European Union, the percentage of workers over 50 grew from 24.7% in 2011 to 31.5% in 2018, in Spain from 20.4% to 31.2%. Objective. Identify trends and detailed patterns of accidents of older construction workers compared to other age groups. Data and Method. We analyzed construction accidents in Spain from 2011 to 2018 (N = 455,491). The number of accidents and lost working days (LWD) were broken down by occupation, seniority, company size, temporal variables (weekday, hour), trigger, and body part injured and compared for different age groups. Results. Although older worker had fewer accidents, the consequences of accidents were more serious. Those over 50 years had 84% more lost working days (LWD) than those under 24 years, 48% more than those between 25 and 39 years, and 21% more than those between 40 and 49 years. (1) Occupation: the percentage of accidents grew with age for supervisors, lorry drivers, and bricklayers. (2) Seniority: the least experienced (less than 6 months) and the most experienced (more than 6 years) had the most LWD. (3) Company size: there are 24.5% of accidents in companies of less than four workers. (4) Trigger: older workers suffered more falls, both from height and at the same level. (5) Time: the percentage of accidents in those over 50 was higher on Thursdays and Fridays, in the afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m., and after four hours of work. (6) Injury: this shows the longest absences for shoulder injuries for those over 50 years, with an average of 70 LWD
