Antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of ling-heather honey powder obtained by different methods with several carriers

    Get PDF
Honey powder is being increasingly used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, because it avoids inconveniences of raw honey, such as high viscosity, stickiness and formation of sugar crystals. It is of paramount importance to know if honey powders keep the features of raw honeys. This is the first study, in which total phenolics, total flavonoids, and biological properties of ling-heather (Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull) honey powders obtained by different drying methods (spray drying, vacuum drying and freeze drying), using different carriers (Arabic gum, whey protein isolate and maltodextrin) were assessed. Results showed that all the drying procedures and carriers retained the honey phenolics in the honey powders. Honey powders' antioxidant activities against different free radicals (ABTS•+, ROO•, •OH and O2•-) were higher than those of the raw honeys, while honey powders’ anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities against several microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli) were lower. Concentration of honey in the powder and type of carrier used for dehydration were the key factors for the quality of honey powders. However, the drying procedure did not strongly influence the parameters and properties studied.Junta de Castilla y León (Spain) for financial support (BU041G18), and for the research assistant contract given to Ms. Leire Cantero (Grant No. UBU-09-A)

    Guía práctica ATEX MADERA

    No full text

An Intelligent Visualisation Tool to Analyse the Sustainability of Road Transportation

    Get PDF
Road transport is an integral part of economic activity and is therefore essential for its development. On the downside, it accounts for 30% of the world’s GHG emissions, almost a third of which correspond to the transport of freight in heavy goods vehicles by road. Additionally, means of transport are still evolving technically and are subject to ever more demanding regulations, which aim to reduce their emissions. In order to analyse the sustainability of this activity, this study proposes the application of novel Artificial Intelligence techniques (more specifically, Machine Learning). In this research, the use of Hybrid Unsupervised Exploratory Plots is broadened with new Exploratory Projection Pursuit techniques. These, together with clustering techniques, form an intelligent visualisation tool that allows knowledge to be obtained from a previously unknown dataset. The proposal is tested with a large dataset from the official survey for road transport in Spain, which was conducted over a period of 7 years. The results obtained are interesting and provide encouraging evidence for the use of this tool as a means of intelligent analysis on the subject of developments in the sustainability of road transportation

Preparation of Water-in-Oil Nanoemulsions Loaded with Phenolic-Rich Olive Cake Extract Using Response Surface Methodology Approach

    Get PDF
In this study, we aimed to prepare stable water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsions loaded with a phenolic-rich aqueous phase from olive cake extract by applying the response surface methodology and using two methods: rotor-stator mixing and ultrasonic homogenization. The optimal nanoemulsion formulation was 7.4% (w/w) of olive cake extract as the dispersed phase, and 11.2% (w/w) of a surfactant mixture of polyglycerol polyricinoleate (97%) and Tween 80 (3%) in Miglyol oil as the continuous phase. Optimum results were obtained by ultrasonication for 15 min at 20% amplitude, yielding W/O nanoemulsion droplets of 104.9 ± 6.7 nm in diameter and with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.156 ± 0.085. Furthermore, an optimal nanoemulsion with a droplet size of 105.8 ± 10.3 nm and a PDI of 0.255 ± 0.045 was prepared using a rotor-stator mixer for 10.1 min at 20,000 rpm. High levels of retention of antioxidant activity (90.2%) and phenolics (83.1–87.2%) were reached after 30 days of storage at room temperature. Both W/O nanoemulsions showed good physical stability during this storage period.Junta de Castilla y León (JCyL) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through grant number BU050P20, and by the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (grant number PID2019-104950RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033)

The Contribution of Interdisciplinary Education to the Development of Students Competences with Intellectual Disabilities. An Analysis from the Social and Rights Model

    No full text
Interdisciplinary education is presented as an opportunity to address the challenges of education, especially in the case of the most vulnerable groups. People with intellectual disabilities, because of their specific cognitive processes that influence their learning, have particularly suffered the consequences of school exclusion. In recent years, international treaties have addressed the inclusive education of people with disabilities as one of the problems to be tackled, in a context of diversity and learning for all, and at all stages of life. In the face of difficulties, the foundations that define interdisciplinary education make it a good practice for achieving equal educational opportunities, by addressing content in a holistic way that is close to real problems. This chapter delves into interdisciplinary education as a strategy available for the learning of people with intellectual disabilities, under the approach of the social and rights model, establishing links between the context and the person through new approaches, thus offering a new framework of opportunities for lifelong, quality and inclusive learning

Preventing violent extremism in youth through sports: An intervention from the 3N model

    No full text
Preventive approaches have gained weight with regard to violent extremism. However, although the number of interventions aimed at prevention has increased, many of them do not have a solid theoretical basis and very few have been evaluated, so we do not know the real impact of these interventions. Based on these limitations, a sport-based intervention program was designed to prevent violent extremism. Using the 3N model of radicalization as a theoretical reference, the program was designed and implemented trying to influence the needs, narratives, and social networks of the participants. Thus, the objective of the present research was to evaluate the impact of the program, for which two studies were designed. The first study used a quantitative approach using questionnaires that were answered by the participants and by a control group. The second study used a qualitative approach that included open-ended questionnaires that were completed by the participants’ referents. Both studies assessed the needs, narratives, and social networks of the participants. Overall, the results showed an improvement in social networks and differences in the effects on needs and narratives depending on the study. We conclude by highlighting the role of sports-based interventions in generating a sense of belonging and improving social support as preventive factors. This work was supported by the European Commission [grant SANT-609085F8]
