Monitoring Horizontal Movement of Top of a Spire in Saint Mary Cathedral of Burgos via Computer Vision

    No full text
Long-term monitoring of horizontal movement of the top of vertical elements, such as towers of historical monuments or chimneys, remains a challenge with current solutions. In such structures, which are usually of high historical and cultural value, ageing and structural degradation directly impact their horizontal movement. This study presents a novel solution based on computer vision that allows the monitoring of horizontal movements with very good accuracy (uncertainty less than ±0.26 mm), high measurement speed (up to 5 Hz), and reduced cost. A real-life validation was carried out on the south spire of the Saint Mary Cathedral in Burgos, Spain. Its horizontal movements were monitored for more than a year, and some relevant events were recorded, including high-range thermal variations, strong wind events, and ringing of the bells. The results showed that the proposed solution was particularly robust for long-term monitoring of slow movements, such as those produced by thermal events or those derived from structural degradation. The white noise of the sensor was small and, for long-term measurements and small reading frequencies, it could obtain field accuracies of the order of ±0.1 mm at a recording frequency of 1/10 Hz, which further improved at lower recording frequencies.

The main objective of the study is to know the levels of cognitive anxiety, self-confi dence and somatic anxiety before and after the match and the impact on sports performance (victory-loss) in both sexes. 95 footballers participated (26 women and 69 men) belonging to the cadet, youth and senior categories of Vitoria Gasteiz clubs. The Sports Competitive Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2) was used. (19), made up of 27 items, adapted and validated into Spanish. The results refl ect a greater self-confi dence on the part of men in the moment prior to competing compared to women, who show high values of somatic anxiety. The correct reading of athletes’ states of anxiety can help coaches and physical trainers to modulate the tone and content of motivational talks and technical-tactical instructions so that there is greater use

Unreachable Ithaca. The Impossible Return of the Greek Heroes

    No full text
The ancient Greeks, forced in their history to leave and go back, fabled about the difficulty or impossibility of returning. Many of those stories were collected in the lost epic poem Nóstoi (Returns), that told of the homecoming of the heroes who had fought in Troy. Undoubtedly, it is the return of Odysseus/Ulysses that has cast a more fruitful shadow in later literature, but it is not the only one. Together with Ulysses, his companion Diomedes and Medea are also featured. This essay analyzes the different ways of leaving and returning that these characters represent and their reception in many subsequent narratives, of which a significant overview is offered

Peruvian Modernism con not be said to be a school or a style. The Use of Literature in EFL Classroom: Italian Canadian Short Stories as a Teaching Innovation Experience Through Flipped Classroom Strategy

    No full text
The aim of this article consists of showing that motivation is necessary for the success of a teaching and learning experience in an online classroom. By using the flipped learning method, the student becomes the central part of learning, being more active than in the traditional class and taking responsibility for his/her learning. He/she goes from being a mere spectator who only listens to the teacher's speech to someone with a voice in the classroom structured to allow student to acquire knowledge and build different competencies. The experience described below by implementing the flipped learning in the subject Contemporary Culture and Society of the Anglophone Communities, of the online Bachelor's Degree in Spanish Language and Literature, at the University of Burgos, excitement and self-expression replaced fear and dread. This awareness helped students in the construction of critical thinking and, in this specific case, culture and literature represented a better way for students to understand and know the society in which the language used in the texts is the language spoken (Valdes, 1986). During the first phase of this experience, the 56 students were divided into 14 groups of four members in each one; they were given instructions by different videos recorded by the teacher and during which she explained what to do, how to develop the project and how to proceed and deliver the final task. She also introduced the general topic of the Unit “Acculturation, adaptation and sense of belonging in women emigrants through Italian Canadian short stories” by uploading different readings by different women writers who had migrated from Italy to Canada for different reasons and in different periods since XX century until today. Mostly based on real events, these writings unveil the different coping strategies deployed by Italian Canadian women and how they dealt with the complex process of settling into life in a new country. After having chosen the writer to work on the 14 groups proceeded to research and investigate them. They also kept regular contact with the teacher by fora or tutorials so the teacher could track and monitor their learning progress and needs. The project consisted of preparing a presentation on the woman writer selected including the context she lived in and her work. During the last phase, after the task delivery, she asked all groups to share the posters and presentations and to ask questions and comments about them in a forum opened for that purpose. Finally, a questionnaire on their perception of the flipped learning approach in the course was prepared and distributed to the students. The result of this experience has shown that the flipped learning strategy succeeded in motivating the students to build and acquire knowledge and to reach beneficial outcomes

This work presents the preparation of novel solid polymer electrolytes based on flexible microporous aramids filled with photopolymerized ionic liquids and lithium salt. The materials combined a high ionic conductivity with the mechanical and thermal characteristics of the aramids, including also good flexibility and handleability. First, a simple casting process was followed to obtain microporous aramids with an interconnected channel morphology. In a second step, this channel structure was filled with a solution of non-commercial photopolymerizable ionic liquid, commercial ionic liquids and the lithium salt, followed by UV irradiation to obtain the conducting aramids. Ionic conductivity of the materials was studied at 25 °C, and also in the temperature range between −50 to 90 °C, together with SEM analyses of the filled porous structure and thermal properties, to fully characterize the photopolymerization process of the ionic liquids inside the porous structure. The materials showed high ionic conductivity values together with excellent thermal and mechanical properties, indicating their viability as flexible and thermally stable solid electrolytes.FEDER (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional) and both the Spanish Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MAT2017-84501-R and MAT2017-88923-P), the Consejería de Educacion-Junta ´ de Castilla y Leon ´ (BU306P18) and the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion ´ (PID2019-108583RJ-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033)

“Un estado de la conciencia contemporánea”: género y moral en La sirena negra de Emilia Pardo Bazán

    No full text
Despite Emilia Pardo Bazán’s prominent feminism, La sirena negra has been strangely overlooked by gender studies. When the novel was published in 1908, Gómez de Baquero judged it “non feminist” due to its superficial heroines and the centrality of its complex masculine characters. Academic studies of La sirena negra have not refuted this idea, since they have elided gender approaches to focus on its decadent aesthetics. This article argues, on the contrary, that the novel’s androcentrism can be read as a Pardo Bazan’s strategy to appropriate the patriarchal discourse and hold it responsible for national degeneration. Emilia Pardo Bazán was harshly affected by the fin-de-siècle crisis. In her opinion, Spanish decay came from a lack of solid morality. Thus, Catholic principles should be restored because they would provide the autoregulation mechanisms to regenerate and reassemble the country. Literature should show the new reality, and the French roman psychologique provided her with an appropriate model. La sirena negra sets out the problem of the moral anomie through its protagonist, Gaspar de Montenegro. The analysis of his sexuality and gender performance reveals the danger of this amoral behavior for the degeneration of society, attributed ultimately to the patriarchal order and the androcentric discourse.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.Publicación en abierto financiada por el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Castilla y León (BUCLE), con cargo al Programa Operativo 2014ES16RFOP009 FEDER 2014-2020 DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, Actuación:20007-CL - Apoyo Consorcio BUCL

Multiple reaction monitoring for identification and quantification of oligosaccharides in legumes using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer

    Get PDF
Raffinose family oligosaccharides are non-digestible compounds considered as dietary prebiotics with health-related properties. Hence, it is important to develop highly specific methods for their determination. An analytical method is developed in this study for oligosaccharide identification and quantification using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry equipped with a triple quadrupole analyser operating in Multiple Reaction Monitoring mode. Raffinose, stachyose and verbascose are separated in a 10-minute run and the method is validated over a broad concentration range, showing good linearity, accuracy, precision and high sensitivity. A low-cost, short eco-friendly procedure for oligosaccharide extraction from legumes, with a high recovery rate extraction, good repeatability and reproducibility is also proposed. No plant-matrix effects were demonstrated. The method applied to the screening of 28 different legumes revealed species-related traits for oligosaccharide distribution, highlighting Pisum sativum (9.22 g/100 g) as the richest source of these prebiotics and its suitability as a functional food ingredient.Prieto-Santiago is a research assistant funded by Junta de Castilla y León (Spain) (Grant No. UBU-10-B)

Screening the biological properties of transition metal carbamates reveals gold(I) and silver(I) complexes as potent cytotoxic and antimicrobial agents

    Get PDF
We report a screening study aimed to assess for the first time the air- and water-stability and the biological potential of simple metal-carbamates. These molecular metallic species are based on elements belonging to the groups 4–5, 7–9 and 11, and tin, and are easily available from inexpensive reagents. Complexes [Ag(O2CNEt2)] (13-Ag) and [Au(O2CNMe2)(PPh3)] (14-Au) resulted substantially stable in aqueous media and exhibited a potent in vitro cytotoxicity. Especially 13-Ag revealed a significant selectivity against the A549 lung adenocarcinoma and the A2780 ovarian cancer cell lines with respect to the noncancerous HEK293 cell line. Generation of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and mitochondrial membrane depolarization were recognized for 13-Ag and 14-Au; notwithstanding, the cell death mechanism is different in the two cases: apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase for 13-Ag; necroptosis and cell cycle arrest in S phase for 14-Au. Both 13-Ag and 14-Au are endowed with antibacterial activity, which is relatively stronger for 13-Ag towards Gram negative and for 14-Au towards Gram positive strains, respectively.La Caixa Foundation (LCF/PR/PR12/11070003), Consejería de Educación-Junta de Castilla y León-FEDER Funds (BU305P18), Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (RTI2018-102040-B-100) and the University of Pisa (PRA_2020_39)
