Recatadas e pudorosas: O vestuário das personagens femininas espanholas como reflexo das qualidades morais da mulher no Regime de Franco (1939-1952)

    Get PDF
This research aims to analyze women's wardrobe in Spanish films made between 1939 and 1952. It is based on the premise that the Regime used movie screens as a school for behavior. This was an apparently harmless way to indoctrinate the population in prevailing principles in a divided society, fresh out of a Civil War. Films became visual proposals of what was accepted and acceptable, not only in terms of love, sex, and gender relations, but also in the way one was to dress. Cinema, controlled by censorship, contributed to instating a female dress code that defined aesthetic parameters, but also moral categories. Films establish the limits of modesty. It was also to promote a system to indicate socially correct and incorrect trajectories, based on the development of plots and the creation of stereotyped characters.

The rigorousness of the wind sector subject their designs to certification following the criteria of specific guides which, referring to international materials standards, take into account the particularities of the turbines. In these guides and standards, some of the requirements for cast materials are not completely defined or should be interpreted, which makes it difficult to optimise their performance. This thesis reviews the criteria for the use of cast materials used in the wind energy sector and integrates the mechanical property prediction from process simulation into the structural calculation. The thesis presents three technical articles published in the journal of the American Foundry Association and expands on certain aspects of residual stress and fracture mechanics that were not explicitly covered in the published articles

Raw-crushed wind-turbine blade: Waste characterization and suitability for use in concrete production

Many of the first wind-turbine installations are reaching the end of their useful life, so their blades have to be replaced. Inexpensive, sustainable, and straightforward recycling solutions are therefore needed. The conversion of turbine blades into raw materials for concrete solutions is proposed in this paper, through a novel recycling process entailing non-selective cutting, crushing, and sieving of the blade walls, without component separation. The material, Raw-Crushed Wind-Turbine Blade (RCWTB), consists of fiberglass-composite fibers, polyurethane, and balsa-wood particles. It serves as concrete fibers and aggregates, according to its physical and microscopic characterizations. A customized concrete mix design and a five-stage mixing procedure with up to 6% RCWTB achieved suitable workability levels. The compressive strength of the RCWTB concrete was 40 MPa, and it had a higher load-bearing capacity and a lower carbon footprint than ordinary concrete. The results encourage research on the overall performance of RCWTB concretes. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and, finally, the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]

On the Tunability of Toxicity for Viologen‐Derivatives as Anolyte for Neutral Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

    Get PDF
Viologen-derivatives are the most widely used redox organic molecules for neutral pH negative electrolyte of redox flow batteries. However, the long-established toxicity of the herbicide methyl-viologen raises concern for deployment of viologen-derivatives at large scale in flow batteries. Herein, we demonstrate the radically different cytotoxicity and toxicology of a series of viologen-derivatives in in vitro assays using model organisms representative of human and environmental exposure, namely human lung carcinoma epithelial cell line (A549) and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results show that safe viologen derivatives can be molecularly engineered, representing a promising family of negolyte materials for neutral redox flow batteries. The authors acknowledge financial support by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion, Grants PID2021-124974OB-C22 and PID2020-115789GB-C21) and Ramon y Cajal award (RYC2018-026086-I) as well as the MeBattery project. Ponencia presentada en: 5th International Conference on Structural Integrity (ICSI 2023), 28th August - 1st September, 2023. Funchal, Madeira (Portugal)Hydrogen embrittlement of a 2205 DSS has been evaluated by in-situ tensile tests at high-pressure hydrogen gas. Mechanical tests were conducted in smooth and notched samples, following the ASTM G142 standard. Hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility was studied at 70 and 140 bar. In the smooth samples, the loss of ductility was marked. However, the increase in hydrogen pressure from 70 to 140 bar seems to be practically negligible. On the other hand, in the notched samples, hydrogen damage was especially remarkable at 140 bar. Finally, hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility is also discussed based on the fracture micromechanims. The authors would like to thank the Spanish Government for the financial support received to perform the research projects PID2021-124768OB-C21 and TED2021-130413B-I00–HyDuplex3D. This paper explains the situation with regard to food waste, the ways in which it affects us and specifically covers the case of the hotel and catering industry. In the same way, it shows what the proposed legislative responses have been, it will delve into some ideas, ways and plans of action for the company to mitigate this problem and turn it into an advantage, specifically through new forms of business or strategies aimed at marketing. A study of the hotel and catering sector, particularly in the province of Burgos, will be carried out by means of interviews with entrepreneurs or staff from different premises, with the aim of being able to determine the magnitude of the problem (type and quantity of food waste), and what their level of awareness of the issue is, as well as how they act in the face of it

Teaching science to students with special educational needs: a systematic review of science teaching-learning approaches in regular and special education settings

    Get PDF
In this systematic review, a series of didactic proposals and experiences that have been developed over recent years in formal education are presented with the common purpose of ensuring that students with special educational needs learn science. Initially, only 54 publications on the topic were identified, which underlines the scarce research over the last 20 years and the small percentage of papers published in research journals and conference proceedings within this area. From among those publications, our review is focused on the 27 that report the implementation of didactic interventions: 11 at specific special education centres and 16 at regular educational centres. Explicit instruction was considered a fundamental strategy in the first group, while varied experiences and methods were among the most relevant approach in the second group. In addition, both educational environments involve learner-centred teaching approaches, with the implementation of inquiry-based and hands-on activities, in line with the general results of research in Science Education that does not specifically deal with SSEN. Ensuring that all learners have the opportunity to learn science requires more specific and complementary studies that consolidate the evidence of these results, taking into account the diversity of learners in classrooms for the benefit of all. This work was supported by Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain

Social Simulation Models as Refuting Machines

    No full text
This paper discusses a prominent way in which social simulations can contribute (and have contributed) to the advance of science; namely, by refuting some of our incorrect beliefs about how the real world works. More precisely, social simulations can produce counter-examples that reveal something is wrong in a prevailing scientific assumption. Indeed, here we argue that this is a role that many well-known social simulation models have played, and it may be one of the main reasons why such well-known models have become so popular. To test this hypothesis, here we examine several popular models in the social simulation literature and we find that all these models are most naturally interpreted as providers of compelling and reproducible (computer-generated) evidence that refuted some assumption or belief in a prevailing theory. By refuting prevailing theories, these models have greatly advanced science and, in some cases, have even opened a new field of research

Strategy sets closed under payoff sampling

    No full text
We consider population games played by procedurally rational players who, when revising their current strategy, test each of their available strategies independently in a series of random matches –i.e., a battery of tests–, and then choose the strategy that performed best in this battery of tests. This revision protocol leads to the so-called payoff-sampling dynamics (aka test-all Best Experienced Payoff dynamics). In this paper we characterize the support of all the rest points of these dynamics in any game and analyze the asymptotic stability of the faces to which they belong. We do this by defining strategy sets closed under payoff sampling, and by proving that the identification of these sets can be made in terms of simple comparisons between some of the payoffs of the game.Financial support from the Spanish State Research Agency (PID2020-118906GB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), from the Regional Government of Castilla y León with the EU-FEDER program (CLU-2019-04), and from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with the Fulbright Program (PRX19/00113, PRX21/00295) is gratefully acknowledged
