Propuesta e implementación de una intervención educativa para el abordaje de la biotecnología desde la controversia sociocientífica

    Get PDF
The progress of biotechnology over the past few decades has played a crucial role in multiple fields such as medicine, agriculture and industry. However, this development has always been surrounded by controversy in diverse sectors of society, granting biotechnology a prominent position among the socioscientific issues: social controversies presenting a scientific foundation that comprise other ethical, political, environmental and social concerns. In such context, scientific literacy —STEM competence in the current educational legislation— becomes essential in order to understand the underlying scientific framework and evaluate the implications of these controversies in other areas. The main goal of this work has been to present an innovative educational proposal for 4th graders of secondary education that provides students with a scenario to engage with socioscientific issues in the field of biotechnology from a critical perspective, thus enabling the development of the necessary skills for an informed and participatory citizenship. The proposal, which integrates elements of Project-Based Learning along with the use of real news and information and communication technologies, has been implemented during the course of the practicum, receiving positive feedback from the students

Electric Field Effects on Curved Graphene Quantum Dots

    Get PDF
The recent and continuous research on graphene-based systems has opened their usage to a wide range of applications due to their exotic properties. In this paper, we have studied the effects of an electric field on curved graphene nanoflakes, employing the Density Functional Theory. Both mechanical and electronic analyses of the system have been made through its curvature energy, dipolar moment, and quantum regeneration times, with the intensity and direction of a perpendicular electric field and flake curvature as parameters. A stabilisation of non-planar geometries has been observed, as well as opposite behaviours for both classical and revival times with respect to the direction of the external field. Our results show that it is possible to modify regeneration times using curvature and electric fields at the same time. This fine control in regeneration times could allow for the study of new phenomena on graphene. This work was supported by the Regional Government of Castilla y León (Junta de Castilla y León), by the Ministry of Science and Innovation MICIN (grant PGC2018-097831-B-I00), and by the European Union NextGenerationEU (PRTR C17.I1)

The Boomerang Effect of Suppression of Emotional Expression: Relationship Power, Affectivity and Adolescent and Youth Male-To-Female Dating Violence

    Get PDF
Scarce research has been performed on the role of power, affectivity, and suppression of emotional expression in the use of dating violence by adolescents and young men. This study aims to analyze a model of the associations between perceived power (control and dominance), affectivity (positive and negative affect), suppression of emotional expression and the frequency of use of male-to female dating violence. Participants in this cross-sectional and correlational study were 786 Spanish students aged between 13 and 25 years (M = 18.80; SD = 2.93) divided in two groups: 13–18 (316 adolescents, M = 15.58; SD = 1.02) and 18–25 (462 young men, M = 20.79; SD = 1.98) with 8 participants not stating their age. Different sequential mediation models confirmed that, only in young men, affectivity (negative and positive affect) and suppression of emotional expression mediate the relationship between power and the use of dating violence. Fostering equal relationships, associating them with positive emotional states, avoiding the frustration derived from low power perception, and providing young men with strategies for appropriately expressing their emotions may help decrease the use of dating violence. This work is supported by a grant awarded to the iR&D project PID2020-116658GB-I00PSI, financed by MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033/. Evaluation of uncertainty in the measurement of the stress-optic coefficient

    Get PDF
In this study, a method for evaluating the uncertainty of stress-optic coefficient measurements of photoelastic materials on a uniaxial tension/compression specimen is presented. The same problem is also approached in other previously used methods, in which multiple data fitted with ordinary least squares are considered. However, only the repeatability contribution to uncertainty is considered in those other methods, which are therefore not consistent with the ISO–Guide to the expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. All possible contributions to uncertainty can be taken into account using the General Least Squares-Lagrange Multipliers (GLS-LM) method presented here. The application of the method is illustrated with an example, from which it can be seen that uncertainty has been underestimated in the other methods used to date. As well as the estimate of the stress-optic coefficient and its corresponding standard uncertainty, the method also provides a data consistency test and an outlier identification tool

Single and multispecies microalgae toxicological tests assessing the impact of several BPA analogues used by industry

    Get PDF
BPA is a hazard for human and environmental health and recently BPA was added to the Candidate List of substances of very high concern by European Chemical Agency (ECHA). In accordance with this proposal, the authorities have encouraged the replacement of BPA by BPA analogues; however, little is known about the impact of these compounds on the environment. Due to this situation five BPA analogues (BPS, BPAP, BPAF, BPFL and BPC) were chosen in order to study their effects on marine primary producers. Three marine microalgae species (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis suecica and Nannochloropsis gaditana) were selected for single and multispecies tests concerning the ecotoxicological effects of these BPA analogues. Microalgae were exposed to BPs over 72 h at different dosages (5, 20, 40, 80, 150 and 300 μM). Responses such as: growth, ROS production, cell complexity, cell size, autofluorescence of chlorophyll a, effective quantum yield of PSII and pigment concentrations were assessed at 24, 48 and 72 h. The results revealed that BPS and BPA showed lower toxicity to microalgae in comparison with BPFL > BPAF > BPAP and >BPC for the endpoints studied. N. gaditana was the least sensitive microalgae in comparison to P. tricornutum and T. suecica. However, a different trend was found in the multispecies tests where T. suecica dominated the microalgae community in relation to N. gaditana and P. tricornutum. The results of this work revealed for first time that present day BPA analogues are a threat and not a safe substitute for BPA in terms of the marine phytoplanktonic community. Therefore, the results of their impact on aquatic organisms should be shared.Marta Sendra thanks to the Juan de la Cierva Incorporación (IJC 2020-043162-I) contract funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR
