    No full text
This thesis arises with the intention of contributing to teacher training and evaluation in order to meet the current challenges brought about by globalisation. These challenges relate to environmental, economic, social and cultural issues, with an emphasis on the last two. In order to design training plans that enable teachers to develop and improve their global teaching competence, it is necessary to clearly define this competence and explore methodologies for its assessment. Our main objective is to elucidate what is meant by global teaching competence and to assess which variables influence it. The methodology used is based on a mixed methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative research. The design is sequential explanatory where in the first quantitative phase the results are analysed and used to construct the qualitative phase. The second phase focuses on qualitative techniques and seeks to collect detailed opinions from participants to help explain the quantitative results in more detail. Following an exhaustive literature review, a definition of general global competence and a model of global teacher competence are proposed. In addition, different instruments for assessing these competencies are identified. Two of the identified surveys are validated in Spanish, and the results of their analysis and the interviews allow us to identify the variables that influence global teaching competence and its teaching. The variables identified have to do with intrapersonal aspects such as: knowledge, ideology, values of universalism and openness to change, willingness and critical awareness; contextual aspects such as: institutional support or support from Non-Governmental Development Organisations (NGDOs), the school's educational project (PEC) and networking. Finally, in the aspects related to practice, what stands out most is the difference between teachers of different fields, where experimental sciences show greater difficulty in connecting the themes or contents of global education with the curriculum of these subjects. It is concluded that there is a need for teacher training in global education and for more research on global competence in teaching

    No full text
Corn is presently one of the most expensively cultivated cereals worldwide, resulting in significant agricultural solid residues. The corncob waste is considered a by-product due to its phenolic fraction rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids that could be substitute synthetic functional additives in various food and pharmaceutical applications. This study has been focused on investigating different extraction processes and operating conditions to recover the phenolic fraction from corncob waste, followed by an identification study to valorise the final extracts. The experiments were conducted using bath extraction with rotary agitation and ultrasound-assisted extraction. The solvent was ethanol, water, and various ethanol-water mixtures. Ultrasonication has been more effective than rotatory agitation, ensuring higher extraction yields in a much shorter contact time. The presence of kaempferol, p-coumaric acid and ethyl-ferulate has been identified in the phenolic profile of all extracts from the treatment of corncob waste with ethanol solvents. The response surface methodology with a Box-Behnken desing (BBD) has been employed to analyse the combined effect of contact time, solid waste amount and ethanol fraction in the solvent on the extraction efficiency. Kinetic experiments were also performed with the optimal solvent selected from the BBD to examine maximising extraction of p-coumaric acid, kempferol and ethyl-ferulate

Confrontation as a banner. Analysis of Vox’s political discourse in the 2021 Catalan elections

    No full text
The electoral campaign of the 2021 Catalan elections, which were the first Catalan elections to be called after the exceptional elections which had been called by Spanish President Mariano Rajoy in 2017, introduced an important novelty in Catalan politics: the participation of the Vox party in the Catalan regional elections. This newness compounded the unusual context of organizing an election during the COVID-19 global pandemic. This research analyzes the discursive content used by the radical right-wing party Vox to approach these elections. Specifically, to carry out this analysis, the main components of Vox’s political discourse in the meetings held during the campaign, and the principal components of its electoral program, are classified by means of content analysis. The main conclusion is that Vox uses confrontation with the Catalan independence movement as its primary campaign message, leaving aside other characteristic issues of its discourse such as immigration or confrontation with the feminist movement

Póster presentado en: XXVII Encontro Luso Galego de Química, 22-24 de novembro 2023, Porto (Portugal).Theonion (AlliumcepaL.) processing industry generates substantial inedible wastes which constitute an environmental risk. Nevertheless, these wastes could be valorized to obtain bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anticancer and antidiabetic properties [1]. For this purpose, subcritical water extraction (SWE) offers an eco-friendly approach by using pressurized hot water (100-374ºC) with unique properties as solventThis work also had the financial support from the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación [PID2020-116716RJ-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033]

    No full text
This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [grant numbers PID2023-146642OB-I00; 719 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715 B–I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231; BU033P23

Effects of a Functional Product Derived from Beet Molasses Vinasse on Blood Pressure and Endothelial Function in Hypertensive Rats

    No full text
Comunicación presentada en: The 4th International Electronic Conference on Foods 2023, durante los días 15-30 de octubre de forma online.A functional product obtained from beet molasses vinasse (V) was supplemented to hypertensive rats (SHR) to assess its preventive effects against high blood pressure and endothelial dysfunction. Fifteen potential bioactive compounds (including phenolic acids, flavonoids and terpenoids, and glycosylated compounds) were identified and quantified in V by HPLC-MS. The most notable finding of the study was that the blood pressure values remained similar to those at the beginning of the study in the SHR+V group. At the same time, they increased progressively in the SHR control group, reaching a significant difference of 16% (p < 0.05) after 5 weeks of supplementation. Quantitative PCR and Western blot analyses of the aorta demonstrated that V ingestion by hypertensive rats led to decreased ACE mRNA levels and higher SOD2 and eNOS gene expression via promotion of Nrf2 transcriptional activity and down-regulation of the NF-κB pathway. These results are associated with an increased antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory response. In conclusion, the intake of vinasse-derived products could mitigate hypertension and associated endothelial dysfunction. This research was funded by the Junta de Andalucía and the European Union (FEDER), grant number PY18-CO-0047 (AZUBIOACT project), with the collaboration of the Azucarera del Guadalfeo S.A. Valorization of onion skin wastes using subcritical water: flavonoids and pectin recovery

    No full text
Comunicación oral presentada en: 2nd Greenering International Conference 2023, celebrada durante los días 21-23 de marzo en Valladolid (España)Onion skin wastes (OSW) represent around 10% of the total onion production and end up in landfills because they are not suitable for human consumption or animal feeding. Nevertheless this non-edible brown skin and external layers of onions are rich and phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids such as quercetin and derivatives, which are high-added valye natural antioxidants. Additionally, onion skin has gained attention as a good source of pectin. Pectin, a complex polysaccharide composed by uronic acids (66.4%) and neutral sugars (galactose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose or rhamnose) in variable composition, is the major structural component onion cell walls (42,4%). Considering that according to FAO, 2020 onion worldwide production was 104 Mt, there is a great potential for the calorization of the OSW through the recovery of flavonoids and pectin.Agencia Estatal de Investigación [PID2020‐116716RJ‐I00, PID2019‐104950RB‐I00, TED2021-129311B-I00] and Junta Castilla y León (JCyL) and the European Regional Development Fund [BU301P18, BU050P20
