Nickel, copper, and zinc dinuclear helicates: how do bulky groups influence their architecture?

The ligand design factors that may influence the isolation of metallosupramolecular helicates or mesocates still deserve to be investigated. In this sense, dinuclear nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) compounds were obtained by electrochemical synthesis using a family of five Schiff base ligands, H2Ln (n = 1–5), derived from bisphenylmethane and functionalized with bulky tert-butyl groups in the periphery and ethyl groups in the spacer. Six of the new complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, thus demonstrating that the helicate structure is predominant in the solid state. 1H NMR studies were performed for the zinc complexes to analyze if the helical architecture of the metal complexes is retained in solution. These studies reveal that the presence of a tert-butyl group in the ortho position with respect to the OH group is an essential factor identified for the existence of a helicate conformation in solutionThis research was funded by the following FEDER co-funded grants: Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria, Xunta de Galicia GRC GI-1584 (ED431C 2023/02), MetalBIONetwork (ED431D2017/01), and Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Project PID2021-127531NB-I00 (AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER/UE)S

Using heterogeneous computing and edge computing to accelerate anomaly detection in remotely sensed multispectral images

This paper proposes a parallel algorithm exploiting heterogeneous computing and edge computing for anomaly detection (AD) in remotely sensed multispectral images. These images present high spatial resolution and are captured onboard unmanned aerial vehicles. AD is applied to identify patterns within an image that do not conform to the expected behavior. In this paper, the anomalies correspond to human-made constructions that trigger alarms related to the integrity of fluvial ecosystems. An algorithm based on extracting spatial information by using extinction profiles (EPs) and detecting anomalies by using the Reed–Xiaoli (RX) technique is proposed. The parallel algorithm presented in this paper is designed to be executed on multi-node heterogeneous computing platforms that include nodes with multi-core central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) and on a mobile embedded system consisting of a multi-core CPU and a GPU. The experiments are carried out on nodes of the FinisTerrae III supercomputer and, with the objective of analyzing its efficiency under different energy consumption scenarios, on a Jetson AGX Orin.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.

    No full text

The "drownsafe" project: assessing the feasibility of a puppet show in teaching drowning prevention to children and parents

Drowning remains a prominent global pediatric health concern, necessitating preventive measures such as educational initiatives for children and caregivers. In this study, we aimed to assess the feasibility and educational effectiveness of an interactive puppet show centered on teaching water safety to children and parents. A 30 min original theater performance, featuring two actors and three puppets (a girl, a crab, and a lifeguard), was conducted. Subsequently, 185 children (aged 4 to 8) and their 160 parents (134 mothers and 26 fathers) participated in this quasi-experimental study. Pre- and post-show tests were administered to evaluate knowledge and behaviors regarding aquatic environments. Prior to the puppet show, 78% of the children exhibited basic aquatic competency. Only 33% considered swimming alone risky. Following the intervention, 81.6% of the children changed their perception of the risks of solo beach activities, showing improved knowledge regarding contacting an emergency number (from 63.2% to 98.9%, p < 0.001). The intervention increased parents’ intention to visit lifeguard-patrolled beaches and improved their CPR knowledge with regard to drowning victims by 58.8%. In conclusion, a drowning prevention puppet show positively impacted children and parents, potentially enhancing safety behaviors during water-related leisure activities, warranting its consideration part of comprehensive drowning prevention strategiesS

Estudio de la toxicidad oral de compuestos naturales de origen marino

    No full text

Multifunctional polymeric guanidine and hydantoin halamines with broad biocidal activity

Prolonged and excessive use of biocides during the coronavirus disease era calls for incorporating new antiviral polymers that enhance the surface design and functionality for existing and potential future pandemics. Herein, we investigated previously unexplored polyamines with nucleophilic biguanide, guanidine, and hydantoin groups that all can be halogenated leading to high contents of oxidizing halogen that enables enhancement of the biocidal activity. Primary amino groups can be used to attach poly(N-vinylguanidine) (PVG) and poly(allylamine-co-4-aminopyridine-co-5-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)hydantoin) (PAH) as well as a broad-spectrum commercial biocide poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB) onto a solid support. Halogenation of polymer suspensions was conducted through in situ generation of excess hypobromous acid (HBrO) from bromine and sodium hydroxide or by sodium hypochlorite in aqueous solutions, resulting in N-halamines with high contents of active > N-Br or > N-Cl groups. The virucidal activity of the polymers against human respiratory coronavirus HCoV-229E increased dramatically with their halogenation. Brominated PHMB-Br showed activation activity value > 5 even at 1 mg/L, and complete virus inhibition was observed with either PHMB-Br or PAH-Br at 10 mg/mL. Brominated PVG-Br and PAH-Br possessed fungicidal activity against C. albicans, while PHMB was fungistatic. PHMB, PHMB-Br and PAH polymers demonstrated excellent bactericidal activity against the methicillin-resistant S. aureus and vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. Brominated polymers (PHMB-Br, PVG-Br, PAH-Br) were not toxic to the HeLa monolayers, indicating acceptable biocompatibility to cultured human cells. With these features, the N-halamine polymers of the present study are a worthwhile addition to the arsenal of biocides and are promising candidates for development of non-leaching coatingsThe work was supported by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 [PID 2020-113881RB-I00], Spain, Xunta de Galicia [ED431C 2020/17], and FEDERS

Is the photobiomodulation therapy effective in controlling post-surgical side effects after the extraction of mandibular third molars? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objectives The extraction of third molars is one of the most performed surgical procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Pain, oedema, and trismus are the most frequently complications related in the surgical postoperative period. The literature has indicated PBM as a potential adjuvant method to reduce these complications. The aim of this review and meta-analysis is evaluate the PBM, as an optimal method to improve patient experience and minimize postoperative morbidity. Additionally, we seek to determine which wavelength, site, and frequency of application are most effective. Methods This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023429966) and followed PRISMA guidelines. The search was carried out in the main databases, PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, and Lilacs, including reviews in the most important journals in the area of oral surgery and laser applied to oral surgery. In addition, all article references and also gray literature were reviewed. After the studies selection, the relevant data was collected. All the studies were randomized controlled trials and the patients were allocated into two groups: active PBM and inactive PBM. The statistical analysis was carried out using Stata v.16, and the methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed by the Jadad scale and RoB 2.0, respectively. Results Where included 22 studies and 989 subjects, to all with a minimum follow-up of 7 days. Pain and oedema showed statistically significant results in favor to the active PBM group. Especially when laser applied in infrared mode, for pain and oedema at 48 h, MD = -1.80 (CI95% -2.88, -0.72) I² = 92.13% and MD = -1.45 (CI95% -2.42, -0.48) I² = 65.01%, respectively. The same is not true for trismus at 48 h, MD = 0.07 (CI95% -0.06, 0.21) I² = 3.26%. The meta-analysis also presented results in respect of laser site of application and number of PBM sessions. Conclusions PBM with infrared laser, in a combination intraoral and extraoral application, in one session in the immediate postoperative period, has been shown to be effective to achieve the objectives of reducing pain and oedema after third molar extraction.S
