Mild One-Step Protein Recovery from Microalgae Cultivated in Swine Wastewater Using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Aqueous Biphasic Systems

    No full text
Producción CientíficaPhotobioreactor-based microalgae cultivation offers an integrated approach for nutrient-rich wastewater treatment while producing valuable biomass. One of the main microalgae components is proteins, making them a biotechnological target. In this work, to develop efficient and greener extraction methodologies, aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were evaluated for one-step protein extraction from microalgae cultivated in swine wastewater. Six ATPSs combining two NADES—betaine:levulinic acid (Bet:2LA) and choline chloride:urea (ChCl:2Urea)—and their individual components (Bet or ChCl) with phosphate salts were compared. Systems {NADES + K3PO4 + water} were characterized and reported for the first time. Protein recovery yield (PRY) and selectivity (protein-to-carbohydrate mass ratio, R) were assessed for three extraction times and at room temperature. The ATPS {Bet:2LA + K3PO4 + H2O} achieved a PRY of 16.4% and remarkable selectivity after 30 min (R = 2.17 g/g), with proteins concentrated in the NADES-rich phase, and negligible recovery in the salt-rich phase. Although the maximum PRY (18.2% at 120 min) was achieved with the precursor betaine, the ATPS with Bet:2LA at 30 min offered an optimal balance between efficiency and process time. With a water content of up to 50%, these systems underscore the potential of NADES-based ATPSs as sustainable platforms for protein recovery. This work was supported by Grant PID2023-153356OB-I00, funded by MICIU/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by ERDF/EU and by Consejería de Educación of the regional government of Castilla y Leon and ERDF/EU (VA068G24, UIC 338 and CLU-2025-2-06).David Moldes would like to thank the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities for his doctorate scholarship (FPU20/02086

Gender differences in the duration of sick leave: Economics or biology?

    No full text
Producción CientíficaThis study addresses the gender gap in workplace sick leave duration, focusing on the underlying economic and biological factors that contribute to this disparity. Using a novel methodological approach, we combine the stochastic frontier technique with an Oaxaca-Blinder-type decomposition to separate sick leave into medically justified and "opportunistic" days. Our analysis, based on detailed administrative data of workplace accidents in Spain, reveals that men and women recover at different rates for the same injuries, with biological differences explaining the majority of the observed gender gap. Additionally, we identify that men tend to use more sick leave days for reasons unrelated to health recovery. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and employers, providing an empirical foundation for targeted policies that reduce gender-based discrimination in the workplace and ensure fairer resource allocation. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the gender gap in occupational health and offers implications for improving workplace equality

Exploring the future of photosynthetic biogas upgrading process

    No full text
Producción CientíficaThe increasing demand for biomethane in Europe requires the urgent development of sustainable and cost-effective technologies to meet the ambitious target of producing 35 bcm of biomethane by 2030. Biological technologies stand as a promising integrating platform to purify biogas and valorize biogenic CO2, while producing high-value chemicals. Photosynthetic biogas upgrading has demonstrated to be an attractive platform as microalgae can fix CO2 while producing biomass that can be further valorized for biofuel, biofertilizer or biostimulant production. However, its high investment cost and the low microalgae biomass productivities have limited commercialization. Recently, the supplementation of nanoparticles obtained from olive-mill wastewater, has demonstrated to be a promising technique to improve biomass productivity, CO2 removals, and the overall stability of the system. This review summarizes the current trends and future outlooks of this sustainable platform aiming at the development of novel integrated microalgae biorefineries devoted to biogas upgrading and high-value compounds production.Junta de Castilla y León (Consejería de Educación) y cofinanciado por la Unión Europea a través del Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) (CLU-2025-2-06

Género, música, identidad. La pandereta en Cantabria.

    No full text
The pandereta has long occupied—and continues to occupy—a central position in the articulation of Cantabrian cultural identity. Through a close examination of the instrument’s organological features, performance functions, musical repertoires, playing techniques, and socio-performative contexts, this book explores the historical and cultural processes that, since the late nineteenth century, have shaped and reconfigured the domain of traditional music in Cantabria. Adopting an ethnomusicological perspective attentive to memory, transmission, and embodiment, the study approaches the pandereta not merely as a musical instrument but as a cultural agent embedded in networks of social practice and symbolic meaning. Particular attention is given to the voices and life histories of pandereteras recognised within their communities as bearers and transmitters of ancestral musical knowledge. Their testimonies illuminate the ways in which musical practice operates as a site of identity formation, gendered expression, and intergenerational continuity. By situating the instrument within broader processes of cultural revitalisation, heritage-making, and shifting regimes of value, the book highlights the dynamic interplay between preservation and transformation that characterises Cantabria’s traditional soundscape. In doing so, it underscores the role of performance as a locus where memory, community, and cultural belonging are continually negotiated and reimagined

Aprendizaje-servicio como práctica pedagógica para el formento de competencias genéricas

    No full text
Service-Learning is a pedagogical practice that generates truly meaningful learning in students and develops generic competencies, particularly social responsibility. However, its implementation in higher education institutions has not yet been sufficiently widespread, despite the multiple benefits it offers to students, faculty, community partners, and the university, as it allows for connection with the environment. The purpose of this research is to uncover Service-Learning as a pedagogical practice for promoting generic competencies, particularly social responsibility, in undergraduate nursing students and its connection to sustainability values. The topic is approached from a mixed methodological perspective, integrating qualitative and quantitative procedures. To obtain this information, a systematic review was conducted, along with an interview with Nursing faculty members at the Autonomous University of Chile. The Inventory of Socially Responsible Behaviors was administered to students at private universities studying for a Nursing degree. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, and quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical procedures. The results show that Service-Learning is a transformative methodology that fosters the development of social responsibility and should be institutionalized because it allows universities to fulfill their mission of contributing to society through engagement with the community.

Trace duality and additive complementary pairs of additive cyclic codes over finite chain rings

    No full text
Producción CientíficaThis paper investigates the algebraic structure of complemen- tary pairs of additive cyclic codes over a finite commutative chain ring of odd characteristic. We demonstrate that for every additive complementary pair of additive codes, both constituent codes are free modules. Moreover, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a pair of additive codes over a finite commutative chain ring of odd characteristic to form an additive complementary pair. Finally, we show that, in the case of a complementary pair of additive cyclic codes over a finite chain ring of odd characteristic, one of the codes is permutation equivalent to the trace dual of the other

Distinct cortical inhibitory profiles in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: A TMS-EEG study of GABAb function

    No full text
Producción CientíficaBackground: EEG recordings associated with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with paired pulse para- digms allow the in vivo assessment of cortical inhibitory function. The long-interval cortical inhibition (LICI) paradigm can be used to estimate this function related to GABAb receptors. Methods: We compared LICI values between 25 patients with schizophrenia, 16 patients with bipolar disorder (BD), and 23 healthy controls (HC). We also assessed the relationship between LICI values and cognitive per- formance, as well as the treatment with antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and anticonvulsants. Results: LICI was significantly lower in patients with schizophrenia than in controls, but not in BD patients. In the former group, LICI was negatively associated with cognitive performance and positive symptoms. However, benzodiazepines increased LICI values, which does not explain its decrease in schizophrenia patients. Conclusions: Our data support the existence of a functional inhibitory deficit mediated by GABAb receptors in schizophrenia, that is associated with cognitive performance and symptoms. In the context of existing literature, this deficit may characterize a subgroup of patients with this diagnosisInstituto de Salud Carlos III (PI-22/00465)Junta de Castilla y León (Gerencia Regional de Salud) (GRS-2685/A1/2023)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación - MICIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 y por FEDER, UE (grant ID PID2023-150654OB-I00)Fundació La Marató de TV3 (ID de subvención 202219-30-31)Agencia de Gestión de Ayudas Universitarias y de Investigación (AGAUR) (subvención FI-2022)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación - MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 y por la Unión Europea NextGenerationEU/PRTR (subvención JDC2022-050016-I

Relationships between the deck of cards method and the proximity measures approach

    No full text
Producción CientíficaIn this paper, we propose a theoretical comparison of two types of value-based methods within the field of Multiple Criteria Decision Making/Aiding. Both methods make use of qualitative information to produce a value on an interval scale for each alternative, assessed on a set of criteria, for ranking or classification purposes. The two methods are known in the literature as the deck of cards and the one based on ordinal proximity measures. The deck of cards method allows managing the intensities of preferences in a qualitative way by making pairwise comparisons to produce a value for each alternative, while the ordinal proximity measures method allows managing the proximities between the terms of ordered qualitative scales in a pure ordinal way and produces a value for each alternative. This paper provides the mathematical background on the concept of closeness between objects of a linear order, which is common to both methods and the way of assigning values or scores to the terms of ordered qualitative scales. It is presented a proof that, under certain circumstances, these two methods are equivalent. An illustrative example shows how to build an interval scale with the two methods.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MCIN) / Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI): PID2021-122506NB-I00 (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, EU)FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.: UID/97/2025 (CEGIST)Open access funding provided by FEDER European Funds and the Junta de Castilla y León under the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3) of Castilla y León 2021-2027
