What are we even doing here? Building a community of people working with data
Why do we even care about data? What value do data bring us and what value do humans bring to the data landscape? As AI becomes the default in data conversations, data curators are thinking critically about what this means. Intentional efforts from professionals such as curators invested in making data FAIR are key to preserving the meaning of data. There is unique value and importance in people’s labor and experiences when documenting and preserving data. It is the people who dig into the context and elevate what is missing to help make the data more FAIR. In this talk we will address a project from the Data Curation Network (DCN) funded by Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant [re-252343-ols-22] to support the development of specialized curriculum for data curation training for information professionals and data stewards. Key to this work was drawing together data curators and information professionals to create in-depth training resources for four specialized data types: geospatial data, scientific images, code, and simulations. Using a cohort model with a guiding mentor, the project relied upon co-developing strategies to effectively and equitably work with volunteers to generate community-based resources. Community building, co-designing, bringing people from different types of disciplines, data backgrounds, and experiences are equally as important as developing curriculum and sharing it. In fact we have found that the curriculum benefits from and is made stronger when various intersectional voices are present. In this project briefing, the mentors will provide an overview of the community building that went into forming cohorts that developed, piloted and refined specialized data curation curriculum, reflect what worked well and where there are opportunities, and describe directions for future work for the DCN as well as how others can adapt for their own needs. The value that data curators in community bring to institutions, researchers, and data reuse will enable greater usability of data into the future.

Supporting Data for Spectral Engineering with Quantum Dot Films for Enhanced Lettuce Growth
Twelve .csv files were used to conduct the simulations and generate the figures reported in the journal article and its corresponding supporting information file.To improve crop yields without the added cost of supplementary lighting, passive spectral manipulation shifts sunlight into critical wavebands for plant growth. Quantum dot (QD) films shift higher energy photons to lower energies, serving as tunable sunlight filters, but are understudied in this application space. Herein, we identify QD film properties to pro-mote lettuce growth. By simulating films with nine different nontoxic QDs, we calculate a concentration-dependent lettuce yield improvement of up to 45%. QDs that strongly absorb blue/green light and downshift this light to red/far-red wavebands result in the highest lettuce yield enhancements. Despite this strong absorption, we find that QD films can be utilized broadly in the United States. Contrary to common intuition, increasing the photoluminescence quantum yield or film outcoupling efficiency does not further increase lettuce yield, indicating that filtered absorption is the most important factor in design. It investigates human–forest interactions using rigorous econometric methods, including ordinary least squares, instrumental variables (IV), difference-in-differences (DID), and quantile regression. By integrating economic, geospatial, and ecological data, the research evaluates forest-related policies at both micro (household) and macro (county) levels. The findings offer policy insights for optimizing land use, public financial investments, and household decision-making, ultimately contributing to sustainable development by balancing economic growth with environmental conservation. Essay 1 examines the effects of rural poverty alleviation on forest conservation. Using a high-resolution annual land cover dataset and a generalized DID approach, the study finds that poverty alleviation programs increased forest cover by 0.5% annually, with carbon storage benefits outweighing program costs. Rural relocation policies emerge as key drivers of conservation, highlighting a cost-effective strategy for integrating economic development with environmental restoration. Essay 2 evaluates the economic and ecological impacts of large-scale tree planting from 2002 to 2019 using an IV approach. While afforestation enhances grain production—particularly four to eight years after planting—it negatively affects GDP in primary and secondary sectors. The findings reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship between plantation forest maturity and grain production, underscoring the need to balance ecological benefits with economic trade-offs. Essay 3 investigates the long-term effects of China’s Grain for Green (GfG) program, which subsidizes farmers to convert cropland on steep slopes into forests. Using national survey data and a DID framework with multiple treatment periods, the study finds that GfG increases household income and expenditure, primarily through farm income growth and government subsidies. The Influence of Alcohol-Related Stereotypes on Inhibitory Control of Eastern European Immigrants and Non-Immigrant Americans

This item has been modified from the original to redact the signature present.The pervasive issue of alcohol dependence affects diverse demographic groups across the United States, including its sizable immigrant population, notably with European immigrants displaying elevated rates of alcohol and substance abuse. Negative stereotypes surrounding alcohol dependence lack factual basis and contribute to stigma within social, healthcare, and media, exacerbating challenges for affected individuals and communities. This study investigated the impact of alcohol-related stereotypes on inhibitory control cognition among Eastern European immigrants and non-immigrant Americans. Using a cross-cultural approach and a quasi-experimental design, the study explored how stereotype threat influenced inhibitory control, particularly among Eastern European immigrants living in the United States. The stereotype threat condition involved a manipulation that linked drinking behavior with impaired inhibitory control, while the control condition focused on the influence of contextual factors without exposing participants to negative stereotypes. Participants completed both Cued and Alcohol Go/No-Go tasks alongside self-report measures of alcohol use and demographics. It was hypothesized that both groups would show diminished inhibitory control under stereotype threat, with greater impairments anticipated among Eastern Europeans. The results provided limited evidence supporting this hypothesis. However, significant associations were found between alcohol consumption, related consequences, and drinking motives, especially within the non-immigrant American group. These findings hope to shed light on the important topic of looking through a cultural lens and psychological context in understanding substance use and highlight directions for future research and stigma-reducing interventions.Department of Psychological Sciences, UMD, internal grantGaleeva, Indira.
