    REDIBAGG: Reducing the training set size in ensemble machine learning-based prediction models

    Machine learning-based algorithms have gained wide acceptance over the years due to their high generalization capabilities for a wide range of classification applications. Although these algorithms demonstrate potential and promising performance, they are often limited by speed, particularly when training on large databases. Big data sets with many instances have storage requirements and execution times that can be excessive. This study proposes reducing the sample size generated by the bootstrap resampling method in Ensemble Machine Learning-based models and evaluates their generalization capability on unknown data. Reduced bootstrap samples are employed in the training phase of the Bagging ensemble model. This approach reduces execution times and, consequently, storage requirements. The proposed method was tested on classification tasks, effectively reducing training subset size without compromising performance. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach achieves execution times reductions of up to 70% for some data sets. This reduction has no impact on accuracy, whereas maintaining levels comparable to classical Bagging and its variants. On average, the training subset size was reduced by 25% compared to the original size

    El activismo en las escuelas desde la percepción de los futuros maestros y maestras de educación infantil

    El activismo medioambiental se desvela como una acción educativa orientada a educar para la transformación social que permite ofrecer respuestas válidas al cambio global. En este contexto se apuesta por la agencia humana y como objetivo en este estudio nos preguntamos qué percepción tienen los futuros docentes de infantil sobre el activismo medioambiental. Para ello se pasó un cuestionario con preguntas semiestructuradas a una muestra de 54 futuros docentes de infantil. Los resultados fueron analizados a través del software NVIVO12. Los principales resultados muestran que el alumnado de magisterio de infantil valora positivamente el activismo en los centros educativos, aunque mantiene una visión muy polarizada en torno a su utilidad, la cual oscila desde considerarlo como un medio válido para que los estudiantes conozcan los problemas actuales (fin instrumental), a considerarlo como un movimiento y/o lucha por un cambio social (fin transformacional). Este trabajo contribuye a situar el activismo en la formación inicial del profesorado como un medio para garantizar acciones concretas orientadas a introducir un enfoque ecosocial en las escuelas y favorecer otras alternativas de contacto con la naturaleza

    Edge downgrades in the maximal covering location problem

    We tackle the downgrading maximal covering location problem within a network. In this problem, two actors with conflicting objectives are involved: (a) The location planner aims to determine the location of facilities to maximize the covered demand while anticipating that an attacker will attempt to reduce coverage by increasing the length of some edges (downgrade); (b) The attacker seeks to maximize the demand initially covered by the facilities but left uncovered after the downgrade. The attacker can increase the length of certain edges within a specified budget. We introduce a mixed-integer linear bilevel program to formulate the problem, followed by a preprocessing phase and a matheuristic algorithm designed to address it. Additionally, computational results are presented to illustrate the potential and limitations of the proposed algorithm

    Introducción: La evaluación en Educación Infantil se conceptualiza como un proceso sistemático, con una intencionalidad orientada hacia la calidad de la educación y la mejora de la enseñanza-aprendizaje. Desde esta comprensión de la evaluación, la cuestión que conduce este trabajo es: ¿cómo la evaluación en el primer ciclo de Educación Infantil favorece la atención educativa inclusiva al alumnado con discapacidad? Metodología: En el CEI Fernando de Magallanes (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, España) están escolarizados niños/as con y sin discapacidad con edades entre los cuatro meses y los tres años. En este trabajo se recoge una parte del estudio de su caso que se realiza desde 2023, focalizando la atención en las formas de comprender la evaluación para una atención educativa inclusiva en sus aulas. La fuente principal de información ha sido la grabación fílmica de una charla-coloquio ofrecida por la escuela a estudiantes del Grado en Educación Infantil de la Universidad de Cádiz. Asimismo, se ha recurrido a entrevistas semiestructuradas y a observación sistemática. Resultados: La investigación concluye que se da una comprensión multiforme de la evaluación sustentada en tres pilares: 1. Diversidad de momentos y tiempos de evaluación; 2. Heterogeneidad de estrategias evaluativas; 2. Pluralidad de personas implicados en la evaluación.Introduction: Evaluation in Early Childhood Education isconceptualized as a systematic process, oriented towards educational quality and the improvement of the teaching-learning process. According to this understanding of evaluation, the following question guides this work: How does evaluation during thefirst cycle of Early Childhood Education favor inclusive educational attention to students with disabilities? Methodology:The CEI Fernando de Magallanes (Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz, Spain) educates children with and without disabilities from the age of four months to three years. This work considers part of a case study conducted since 2023, which focuses on means of understanding evaluation for inclusive educational attention in its classrooms. The main source of information came from the filming of a talk-colloquium offered by the school to students from the early childhood education degree program at the University of Cadiz. Likewise, semi-structured interviews and systematic observation were used. Results: The study found the existence of a multi-form understanding of evaluation based on three main pillars: 1. Diversity of moments and evaluation times; 2. Heterogeneity ofevaluative strategies; and 3. Plurality of individuals involved in the evaluation

    Unveiling Hate Speech Dynamics: An Examination of Discourse Targeting the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET)

    This article examines hate speech directed at AEMET, the Spanish meteorological state agency, on the social media platform X. We analysed nearly half a million messages posted between 31 December 2021 and 19 April 2023, using hate speech detection algorithms, text mining techniques, and qualitative analysis to identify patterns and themes in the discourse. Our research reveals a troubling reality, with around 25% of the messages collected displaying some degree of hostility towards AEMET, its staff, and its scientific work. A considerable amount of hate speech was expressed through derogatory comments and insults aimed at meteorologists, which is indicative of a wider trend of anti‐intellectualism and scepticism of scientific expertise. Furthermore, the spread of conspiracy theories, particularly those related to geoengineering and chemtrails, highlights the spread of misinformation within online communities. This study emphasises the importance of acknowledging and addressing the spread of hate speech in meteorology and scientific communication. By emphasising the negative effects of such language on public perception and trust in scientific institutions, this article advocates for collaborative efforts to promote a culture of informed dialogue and evidence‐based discourse. The results highlight the importance of combating hate speech and misinformation to protect the integrity and credibility of scientific institutions such as AEMET

    Indoor Environmental Monitoring and Chronic Respiratory Diseases: A Systematic Review

    Chronic respiratory diseases (CRD), which include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, are significant global health issues, with air quality playing a vital role in exacerbating these conditions. This systematic review explores how monitoring indoor air quality (IAQ) can help manage and reduce respiratory exacerbations in CRD patients. A search of the Web of Science database, yielding 301 articles, was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Of these, 60 met the inclusion criteria, and after screening, 21 articles were analyzed. The review identified substantial gaps in current research: the lack of standardization in IAQ monitoring; the need for considering geographic variability and for long-term longitudinal studies; and the importance of linking monitored air quality data with respiratory health indicators. It also stressed the importance of considering the heterogeneity of patients in the methodological study design, as well as the convenience of introducing recommendation systems to assess the true impact of corrective measures on indoor air quality in the homes of chronic respiratory patients. The integration of home-based IAQ monitoring with machine learning techniques to enhance our understanding of the relationship between IAQ and respiratory health is emerging as a key area for future research.     Impact of the ambidexterity of University Technology Transfer Offices on their performance: The Spanish context

    University Technology Transfer Offices (UTTOs) are units created to promote knowledge transfer. They assist academics by creating academic spin-offs (ASOs) and managing contracts, consulting, licenses, and patents. These units have grown in size, age, experience, and professionalism, thereby gaining resources and networks to improve UTTOs’' performance. However, neither the creation of these units nor the presence of these characteristics are sufficient to improve transfer performance. Organizational UTTO ambidexterity, as a dynamic capability, and individual UTTO ambidexterity, as the individual orientation of UTTO employees, seems necessary to address two exploitative and explorative orientations to improve knowledge transfer. Exploitative orientation aims to provide UTTO services by seeking improvement, efficiency, and incremental innovation. Explorative orientation is oriented toward seeking new opportunities to provide new UTTO services and identify new customers for radical innovation. This study analyzes the impact of organizational and individual ambidexterity of Spanish UTTOs on their transfer performance. The regression analysis indicates that the organizational ambidexterity of UTTOs is critical for the number of ASOs. In addition, individual ambidexterity is relevant for obtaining higher contract and consultancy incomes and licenses. By contrast, the impact of organizational and individual ambidexterity on patents is yet to be determined

    Assessment of consolidants for the preservation of Tituli Picti on amphorae from the Ses Fontanelles late Roman shipwreck (Mallorca, Spain): An analytical approach

    The ceramic materials from the Ses Fontanelles wreck are an exceptional find due to the large num- ber of amphorae with preserved inscriptions and their state of preservation. The presence of Tituli Picti is uncommon, and even less so in ceramics altered in an underwater environment. The bibliography on the conservation of these elements is scarce. This manuscript presents the results of a comparative study of two consolidation products: one based on nanoparticles (Nano Estel 1:1) and the other on an acrylic resin based on organic solvents (Paraloid B72 3 % in acetone).This preliminary study aims to es- tablish a methodology for the treatment of the inscriptions painted on Roman amphorae from the Ses Fontanelles wreck (Mallorca), 4th century AD. A suite of analytical techniques was employed, encompass- ing surface analysis via Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for the identification of crystalline phases, hardness and micro-indentation test- ing, peeling test, and measurements of aesthetic alterations using a spectrophotometer and glossmeter. The results obtained from these analyses were found to be highly congruent, underscoring the effective- ness of a long-standing acrylic resin and the potential of the silica nanoparticle-based product, which has seen a surge in utilization. This study also paves the way for further research in this area, as it opens up new avenues for exploration and the potential discovery of additional findings.ARQUEOMALLORNAUTA project, together with the Universitat de Barcelona, Universidad de Cadiz & Universitat de les Illes Balears.
