Political rhetoric online : A critical rhetorical study on the multimodal meaning-making when Swedish politicians convey strategic messages about gang crime on different platforms online

    No full text
This study examines how political leaders of Sweden’s two biggest parties use their rhetorical resources differently when communicating similar messages about gang violence, one of the most pressing and polarised issues in Swedish politics, on text-based and video-based social media. This is by using rhetorical criticism and constitutive rhetoric to compare how the political leaders strategically craft their messages differently across digital platforms. Through this, the study contributes to the research on digital political communication by understanding how political leaders use the situation with gang crime to strategically communicate their ideology in a way that connects with the audience and shapes political identity. The results of this study could show that nonverbal communication seems to support the speaker’s rhetorical ability to reinforce or change the message and build collective identity. More frequently, this was enabled in videos than in tweets. These findings are in line with Kjeldsen and Gelang’s (2023) study, indicating that nonverbal communication may function argumentatively in political communication

Navigating Global Environmental Challenges : Disciplinarity, Transdisciplinarity, and the Emergence of Mega-Expertise

    No full text
This study explores the nature and significance of a crucial form of global environmental expertise: that which relates to conducting global environmental assessments with the aim of influencing decision-making. Drawing on the theory of expertise, which conceptualizes expertise as a social position defined by epistemic practice, this study focuses on expertise in the context of global environmental challenges—particularly relating to climate change and the IPCC—highlighting the expertise required to address this kind of complex and multifaceted issue. This type of expertise allows for a synthesis of the current state of environmental challenges, the proposal of options for action, and communication of these findings to decision-makers and society at large. This expertise shapes knowledge that is much broader than a single disciplinary field, encompassing both ecological and social dynamics, and allows for the development of recommendations for action. This study finds that such expertise embodies a distinct epistemic practice with four key characteristics that distinguish it from more narrowly defined forms of expertise and introduces the term “mega-expertise” to capture the character and position of this kind of expertise. This study concludes by reflecting on the broader implications of this form of expertise, considering its relationship to more traditional, disciplinary scientific expertise.Samhällsvetenskaplig expertis roller för transformativ förändrin

What Drives Girlfriends' Bedtimes? Experimental Effects of Social Technology Use and the Role of Friendship and Personality

    No full text
Technology use is often implicated in adolescent sleep difficulties, yet experimental evidence confirming its impact on bedtime is critically lacking. This study tested whether online socialising with friends delays bedtime compared to non-social online media use, while also considering the roles of friendship quality and personality. Seventeen pairs of female friends (N = 34; ages 16–18 years) spent two nights in a sleep laboratory: one night online socialising with their friend in another room (WhatsApp + Netflix), and one night watching Netflix alone without socialising. Condition order was counterbalanced across pairs. Bedtime was behaviorally observed using infrared cameras. The following morning, participants reported who initiated sleep and their reasons for going to bed. They also completed questionnaires on friendship quality, co-rumination, self-control, bedtime procrastination, and a sleep diary. Multilevel models accounted for the nested structure of repeated assessments within individuals within dyads. On average, participants went to bed later during online socialising than during non-social online use, although this difference was not statistically significant. However, higher friendship quality significantly predicted longer bedtime delays during online socialising, with delays up to 72 min. Feeling sleepy was the primary reason for sleep onset, rather than social motivations. Additionally, there were clear associations between self-reported sleep initiation and bedtime procrastination and behavioural observations of earlier and later bedtimes, respectively. These experimental findings suggest that online socialising may delay adolescent bedtimes, particularly among those with high-quality friendships. These results underscore the importance of addressing peer dynamics and individual differences in supporting healthy adolescent sleep.Ungdomars sömn, kompisar och sociala medier: En multimetodstudi

The experiences of occupational therapists ofusing themselves as a therapeutic instrumentin inpatient brain injury rehabilitation

    No full text
Background: The therapeutic use of self is central to occupational therapy and is defined asthe therapist's deliberate use of their personality and perceptions as part of the therapeuticprocess. Despite the concept's importance, research specifically examining howoccupational therapists navigate this within inpatient brain injury rehabilitation is lacking, where patients' cognitive and communicative impairments pose particular demands. Aim: To explore occupational therapists' experiences of using themselves as a therapeuticinstrument in inpatient brain injury rehabilitation. Methods: Exploratory qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis. Sevenoccupational therapists with experience in inpatient brain injury rehabilitation wereinterviewed through semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed according to Braun andClarke's model, resulting in 346 codes organised into five themes. Results: The result consists of five themes: (1) The self as therapeutic foundation describeshow body, personality, and authenticity constitute the primary tool; (2) Entering and readingthe patient's world highlights the continuous process of seeking understanding and flexibleadaptation; (3) Experience as living resource and compass shows how clinical confidenceand pattern recognition develop over time; (4) Facilitating by being a sounding boarddescribes the facilitative approach; (5) Navigating boundaries and paradoxes illuminates thecomplex balancing acts between closeness and distance, enablement and directiveapproaches, particularly accentuated in the brain injury context. Conclusion: The study shows that therapeutic use of self in brain injury rehabilitationinvolves complex navigation where theoretical concepts such as enablement must bebalanced against more directive interventions when patients' cognitive impairments limitautonomy. The findings underscore the need for experience, continuous reflection, andsystematic support to develop this core competence

Attuning to Play : From Being Seized by Music to Ways of Being-With

    No full text
In this paper we sketch a hermeneutical-phenomenological framework building on two distinct but complementary bodies of theory. The first is an aesthetics of play, as developed by philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer. The second is a theory of vitality affect and affect attunement, as put forth by developmental psychologist Daniel Stern. This will account for how music may not only seize a listener in the moment of play, but also for what it is that both seizes and becomes seized, in a mimetic movement ultimately describable as attunement through vitality affect – thus providing an important key to what makes music exclusive and irreplaceable to many listeners

An innovative method for assessing the relationship between longitudinal brain volume measurements and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants

    No full text
Predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in very preterm infants is critical, but clinically-acquired data like longitudinal total brain volume (TBV), as macroscopic index of brain growth, are often sparse and irregular, hindering accurate prognosis. We studied 294 very preterm infants with TBV measured longitudinally and neurodevelopmental outcomes assessed at 2 years (Bayley-III) and 8 years (WISC-V). To handle missingness and irregular sampling, we compared six imputation strategies (mean, MissForest, MICE, GP, MGP, and MGP (initGP)) and trained a semi-supervised classifier on the imputed TBV trajectories. Performance was evaluated using multiple classification metrics, and results were summarized by averaging across outcomes and ages of study. Across analyses, a novel variant of Missing Gaussian Process (MGP) initialized with a GP fit (MGP (initGP)), which leverages individual patient trajectories to stabilize estimates, achieved the best average performance. Its advantages were most consistent and significant for 8-year outcomes, highlighting its strength in modeling longer developmental trajectories. While performance at 2 years was more modest, this likely reflects the intrinsic challenges of early-term prediction from TBV alone. We therefore recommend MGP (initGP) as a strong default for imputing longitudinal TBV for prognostic studies

Influence of Individual and Contextual Variables on Negative Stereotypes of Ageing in a Spanish Sample

    No full text
The objective of this study is to determine the influence of personal and contextual variables on negative stereotypes towards older age to define a sociodemographic profile, according to age groups. A non-probabilistic purposive sampling was carried out with a sample of 465 participants over 18 years of age. Four age groups were established (early adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood and older age). An ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire and the CENVE were administered. Mean contrasts were performed to determine the differences between the variables studied. The results showed that the late adulthood and older age groups showed a greater presence of negative stereotypes than the other groups. Concerning the contextual variables, primary education and daily contact with dependent older adults presented greater overall negative stereotypes. We can conclude that negative stereotypes about older age increase in women caregivers of dependent older adults. Also, the evolution of stereotypes to self-stereotypes in the older adults group is confirmed

Empowering Leaders: A Transformative Impact of Social Marketing on Communication Skills

    No full text
This chapter sets the stage for a comprehensive exploration of how social marketing strategies employed by companies can influence individuals' motivation to enhance their leadership communication skills. Employing a quantitative approach, it surveys participants before and after a communication skills workshop, focusing on their self- assessed communication skills, satisfaction with the workshop, and the influence of social marketing on their leadership development. The findings indicate a significant positive effect of social marketing strategies on leaders' communication skills, with a notable improvement among those with initially lower skill levels. It also highlights the importance of happiness management in effective leadership communication. It suggests that happier leaders are highly skilled communicators. This study contributes to understanding how targeted social marketing campaigns can foster the development of leadership skills, offering valuable insights for organisations aiming to improve leadership effectiveness through enhanced communication and well- being
