    Applied Research in Field Crop Pathology for Indiana, 2021 serves as a summary of the applied field crop pathology research trials conducted in 2021 under the direction of the Purdue Field Crop Pathology program in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Purdue University. In Indiana, there are more than 57,600 farms, 16,000 crop producers, and 900 certified crop advisers, Extension educators, and crop-protection industry representatives who manage more than 11.4 million crop-production acres with a total value of 6.3billionannually.Therearemorethantwentydiseasesaffectingcorn,soybeans,andwheatthatmaydecreasecropproductionandprofitability.Inasinglegrowingseasoninthestate,diseasescancauseatotalestimatedlossofmorethan6.3 billion annually. There are more than twenty diseases affecting corn, soybeans, and wheat that may decrease crop production and profitability. In a single growing season in the state, diseases can cause a total estimated loss of more than 400 million, making disease identification and management a primary concern. The goal of this book is to share some of the most current, nonbiased, research-based information to address the management of field crop diseases. This data will support individuals engaged in crop production, helping them select effective, sustainable, and economically sound disease-management practices to implement on their farms

    Influencing the Meteoric Rise of AI: Centering Ethics, Law, and Society in Urgent Policy Reform

    Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a transformative technological advancement with the potential to yield extraordinary societal benefits while simultaneously introducing significant potential harms to individuals, governments, and society. The adoption of AI has outpaced the ability of society to collectively and cohesively respond through the implementation of adequate regulatory guardrails. While AI presents novel benefits and challenges, the broader dynamic of responding to new, uncharted technologies has historical precedence. The article\u27s methodological approach employed empirical research using law articles and policies. As such, the article explores the benefits, challenges, and actual or potential harms in three business sectors: business and finance, human resources, and entertainment and copyright. The authors also examine how the U.S. and international jurisdictions have approached AI and conduct an overview of how the large scientific and technological innovation, the Human Genome Project, considered the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of innovation. Lastly, this article provides recommendations for policy and legal protections that are focused not on government oversight but rather requiring the AI innovators, developers, and business users to analyze the ethical, legal, and social implications themselves and make those analyses available to the public, with potential civil and criminal penalties for ELSI breaches

    This abstract presents an innovative approach to teaching food-energy-water (FEW) nexus concepts in rural middle schools using controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Centered at the University of Wyoming Lab School, the project uses a hub-and-spoke model where undergraduate researchers and middle school students prototype small-scale hydroponic systems and develop curriculum materials, which are then shared with five in-service and three pre-service teachers across Wyoming. The approach combines faculty learning communities with entrepreneurial thinking to help resource-constrained rural schools make complex FEW concepts tangible while building capacity for agricultural innovation in their communities

    An integrated framework for food-energy-water-nexus education and educational research

    Our study centers the perspective of practitioners to define and describe FEW-Nexus-based education, identify and describe challenges with FEW-Nexus-based education, and ideate how education research can generate new knowledge to address these challenges. Using artifacts from FEW-Nexus education workshops and existing literature, we developed an integrated framework that can inform both educational practice and educational research. The framework includes ontological (thoughts about the socio-ecological systems aspects of the FEW-Nexus) and epistemological (thoughts about education and educational research of the FEW-Nexus) dimensions. We will next use this framework to probe more deeply into participants’ responses using thematic content analysis
