    Crawfordsville District Interstate Speed Profiles: April 2020–March 2025

    This report presents a graphical summary of monthly mile-hours of congestion across the three interstates (I-65, I-70, and I-74) in INDOT’s Crawfordville District analyzed longitudinally over the last five years from April 2020 to March 2025. It is a continuation of speed profile summaries that are published in previous years. Such systemwide interstate performance measures provide important information for decision makers to plan capital projects and assess operations. Hours of operation by speed bins (0 to 14 mph, 15 mph to 24 mph, 25 mph to 34 mph, 35 mph to 44 mph, 45 mph to 54 mph, 55 mph to 64 mph, more than 65 mph) for every 0.1 mile of the interstate by direction across a month were tabulated for every hour of every day during the month. The quantities of those six different speed bins are plotted as a stacked bar plot from lower to higher speeds by mile marker for each month. The vertical axis shows the mile marker of the interstate. Horizontally, these stacked bars are cropped at maximum of 250 hours (a little more than 10 days) per month to focus on the lower speeds. To produce these plots, more than 60 billion records from INRIX across 5 years were analyzed. These speed profiles help identify areas with congestion at system level as well as regions impacted by severe winter storms and construction projects

    Changes in the Δ17O Values of Nitrate Contained in Sedimentary Strata of the Confidence Hills Formation to Mark Shifts in Precipitation over Time during the Pliocene-Pleistocene Transition

    During the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, the Earth went through significant changes. The Earth transitioned from a warm, relatively wet climate to a cooler and drier climate with the formation of ice caps. The goal of this project was to create a tool to be able to evaluate the ability of a paleo-climate model to predict changes in mean annual precipitation or determine what caused these changes. The main hypothesis was changes in the Δ17O values of nitrate contained in the sediments of the Confidence Hills formation would mark shifts in precipitation during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition. The collected samples were crushed using a ball mill to grind the samples to a fine powder. The samples were mixed with Millipore® water and then sonicated and centrifuged, until the material was precipitated near the bottom of the tube. The mixture above the rock sample was vacuum filtered and diluted for ion chromatography analysis. This analysis was to be used to postulate conclusions

    Shock Pulse Absorption using an Elastomeric Structure Enhanced with Non-Newtonian Fluid

    Non-Newtonian fluids have unique properties which may make them ideal materials to be used in the manufacture of safety equipment. Different types of materials have widely differing properties, and researchers are only now beginning to investigate the physical properties of these various materials. Two different forms of impact experimentation were selected for the ongoing investigation, hammer blow testing and air cart collision testing. Specialty pucks were manufactured, along with control specimens for physical property determination. Normalized energy absorption in collision was recorded against the frequency of the response for 19 different materials. In general, the non-Newtonian fluid filled pucks exhibited peak energy absorption levels at lower frequencies than the control specimens. If this positive result can be confirmed through more extensive testing, then these materials could be incorporated into a variety of safety equipment, improving their ability to protect people and devices

    Hierarchical Convolutional Attention Mixing (Hi-CAM) Transformer for Medical Image Segmentation

    We propose Hi-CAM, a Hierarchical-Convolutional Attention Mixing transformer for medical image segmentation. It uses a pre-trained MaxViT encoder and a novel decoder that combines multi-head self-attention, spatial attention, and squeeze-and-excitation modules to capture long-range dependencies. Deep and shallow convolutions enhance spatial features, while skip connections fuse multi-level features and suppress noise. Experiments on ACDC and Synapse datasets show that Hi-CAM significantly outperforms state-of-the-art models, highlighting the effectiveness of the hierarchical attention-mixing strategy

    Bell Telephone System’s Preeminent Role in the Growth of Industrial Design

    Histories of design pay scant attention to the corded telephone, which played an immeasurable role in early communication. Although the Bell System, with many Nobel Prizes, is justly acknowledged for its technical prowess, it should also be recognized for its early and considerable impact on the developing discipline of industrial design. In 1930, young Henry Dreyfuss, who would later become known as a pioneer of industrial design, was retained by the Bell System as a design consultant and matured in that environment.
