Characteristics of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Sightings and Airport Safety
The prevalence of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) has grown dramatically in recent years. With increasing UASs, an important consideration is UAS sightings around airports. A UAS sighting may result in an airport delay or shutdown, which disrupts airport operations and can lead to significant economic losses. This presentation discusses the characteristics of UAS sightings based on reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and how these UAS sightings relate to airport operations

Factors Associated with Handwashing Behaviors During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Analysis of the Community Health Survey in Korea
Introduction: Handwashing is the most effective preventive behavior for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection. However, research has shown the lower handwashing behaviors among Korean adults. Objectives: This study aims to analyze factors associated with handwashing as a preventive behavior for COVID-19 infection based on the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) behavioral theories. Methods: This secondary data analysis utilized the Community Health Survey developed by Disease Control and Prevention Agency conducted in 2020. Sampling method was stratified and targeted 900 people living in the territory of each community public health center. In total, 228,344 cases were used in the analysis. Handwashing behavior, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, subjective norm, and influenza vaccine uptake were used in the analysis. Regression analysis using weighing strategy by stratification and domain analysis was used. Results: Less washing hand was associated with older age (B=0.01, p \u3c .001), males (B=0.42, p \u3c .001), not receiving an influenza vaccine (B=0.09, p \u3c .001), perceived susceptibility (B=0.12, p \u3c .001), subjective norm (B=0.05, p \u3c .001), and perceived severity (B=−0.04, p \u3c .001). Conclusion: While perceived susceptibility and social norm had positive association, perceived severity had a negative association with handwashing. Considering the Korean culture, creating a shared norm for frequent handwashing could be beneficial to promote handwashing rather than emphasizing the disease and its consequences

Improving Communication and Pilot Safety: Understanding ASR Systems and Their Inherent Biases
The Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability (PEGASAS) is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Center of Excellence for General Aviation. The mission of PEGASAS is to enhance general aviation safety, accessibility, and sustainability by partnering the FAA with a national network of world-class researchers, educators, and industry leaders. Weather information devices currently used in the general aviation aircraft market are highly advanced and provide detailed and timely meteorological information to pilots. Upon its introduction, it was expected that this technology would lead to a decrease in weather related accidents, but that has not been the case. When pilots encounter unforeseen extreme weather conditions, they are encouraged to report the hazard in order to warn other planes that may be in the area to take a different route. This system fails when the method used to report takes the pilot’s attention away from the dangerous conditions outside. This can lead to pilots choosing to not report bad weather in order to fully focus on flying, or they report the conditions and risk the safety of their own flight. An Automatic speech recognition (ASR) system could allow pilots to fill-out the meticulous report form, without taking their eyes off the sky to complete it manually. However, this process is not without issues. Noise in the cockpit and bias of the system can cause inaccurate reporting. This can potentially lead to other planes not knowing what truly lies ahead or to prepare for incorrect conditions, making air traffic in the area less safe, due to pilots contending with unexpected circumstances. Ultimately, bad process output causes pilots to have to manually correct their flights near weather problems, which the system was put in place to avoid in the first place. This project’s overall goal is to attempt incorporating weather technology in the cockpit research into FAA standards documents and improve pilot decision making with respect to adverse weather conditions
