Coming of Age and Exile in \u3cem\u3eNo pasó nada\u3c/em\u3e
The article examines the effect of exile on the coming-of-age process in Skármeta’s novel, No pasó nada. Through textual analysis and the application of theories surrounding identity formation, socialization, and the accommodation of the individual into society, the paper demonstrates how exile both complicates and acts as a catalyst in the protagonist’s coming of age. Despite the fact that the novel was published in the second half of the twentieth century, the protagonist follows the classical coming-of-age process depicted in nineteenth-century texts, prior to changes brought about by late capitalism, globalization and the explosion of digital media platforms that allow for mediated contact with, and exploration of a multiplicity of distant others. I argue that the reason for this adherence to the classical coming-of-age process in Skarmeta’s late twentieth-century novel hinges on the fact that its protagonist must undergo his search for a suitable role in society, one that is in tune with his identity, as a member of a community in exile
Direct van der Waals simulation (DVS) of phase-transforming fluids
We present the method of direct van der Waals simulation (DVS) to study computationally flows with liquid-vapor phase transformations. Our approach is based on a discretization of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations, which couple flow dynamics with van der Waals’ nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory of phase transformations, and opens an opportunity for first-principles simulation of a wide range of boiling and cavitating flows. The proposed algorithm enables unprecedented simulations of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations involving cavitating flows at strongly under-critical conditions and ��(105) Reynolds number. The proposed technique provides a pathway for a fundamental understanding of phase-transforming flows with multiple applications in science, engineering, and medicine
Measurement of vapour pressure, miscibility and thermal conductivity for binary and ternary refrigerant lubricant mixtures in the context of heat pump tumble dryers
Household appliances need to be both efficient and cost-effective. As a result, electrically driven tumble dryers were converted to heat pump driven ones several years ago in order to comply with energy directives, in this case in Germany. In order to increase the efficiency of heat pumps of different performance classes, the use of zeotropic refrigerant mixtures can be useful, since the temperature glide during the phase change of the refrigerant mixture can be adapted to the temperature gradients of the secondary fluids. In order to take advantage of this unique property, a refrigerant mixture selection was carried out by a screening procedure using REFPROP. Within the investigation presented here, two different zeotropic refrigerant blends, propane (R290)/dimethyl ether (DME or RE170) (30 wt.%/70 wt.%) and R152a/carbon dioxide (R744) (90 wt.%/10 wt.%) are focused on as substitutes with low global warming potential (GWP) for R134a in heat pump tumble dryers. The focus is on the interaction between the refrigerant mixtures and the respective lubricant to ensure usability in the heat pump tumble dryer. A specialised polyolefin-based (POE) lubricant was chosen for each refrigerant blend. Because the numerous combinations of possible refrigerant mixtures can lead to unanticipated challenges with oil mixtures, additional experimental investigations are necessary to ensure the compatibility of the lubricant and refrigerant mixture combination in the temperature ranges associated with the investigated application. Therefore, measurements of the vapor pressure, miscibility gaps and thermal conductivity of the refrigerant-lubricant mixture have been carried out and are the focus of this paper
Leading the way: University libraries advancing Sustainable Development Goals
Universities play a critical role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their mandate of teaching, education, research, and community engagements. Through their support of the mother body, university libraries provide access to information towards the successful achievement of SDGs. One way of achieving the SDGs is through citizen science. Citizen science is the involvement of community members in scientific research. The success of citizen science projects towards achieving SDGs has been vastly reported in the literature. Data produced from citizen science projects can be used towards achieving SDGs. This is where academic librarians can play a critical role in ensuring that the right information is provided to the right people and is fit for purpose. Academic librarians, as knowledge hubs, have the knowledge and expertise to support SDGs. The aim of the study is to propose a framework that university libraries can adopt to embed citizen science in their service offerings to assist in achieving SDGs. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method research design to source views from academic librarians in university libraries in South Africa. The study\u27s findings revealed that academic librarians are willing to support and promote citizen science activities. However, there are potential pitfalls which may hamper their intentions. The study developed a proposed framework that academic librarians can adopt and embed citizen science activities
Determining Asphalt Mixture Properties Using Imaging Techniques
This study introduces imaging technology to determine the bulk specific gravity (Gmb) of compacted asphalt mixture specimens. Using an advanced three-dimensional scanner, a fast, accurate technique for determining compacted asphalt mixture specimen Gmb was developed. The feasibility of this technique was evaluated by testing a collection of asphalt mixtures, including dense-graded and stone mastic asphalt mixtures. The results were compared with those obtained using the currently-specified Gmb measurement methods of AASHTO T166 and CoreLok. The proposed scanning technique was also used for both laboratory-prepared and field-cored specimens to determine its reliability and reproducibility. The study results suggest the proposed imaging technique is effective in decreasing Gmb measurement variation as well as in improving the accuracy and reproducibility. Additionally, the results indicate the proposed technique can be applied to any asphalt specimen, regardless of mixture type, aggregate sizes, or fabrication technique
Leveraging AI platforms for Business Librarians and Information Professionals: Developing Pedagogical Strategies to Disseminate Information and Improve Learning Retention.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms continue to revolutionize college students\u27 learning and retrieval methods. This technological advancement in higher ed has pivoted instructors\u27 pedagogical practices, making it challenging for professors to disseminate information and differentiate AI assistance with course assignments submitted by students. The magnitude of recent changes in students\u27 information-seeking behavior has raised the question: How can Business Librarians incorporate AI tools into information and data literacy?
My lightning talk will discuss the need for proper accountability in information curation using AI platforms. Furthermore, this presentation will provide pedagogical strategies that show the strengths and limitations of ChatGPT as well as various AI platforms. In addition, I will discuss how I have utilized AI platforms to teach business data and information literacy using case studies to demonstrate the distinction between credible and non-creditable information. The presentation will emphasize the importance of academic librarians\u27 need to stay at the forefront of AI technology in higher education

To define the limits of European cultural spaces requires a pragmatic and empirical approach, founded on a comparative overview of the circulations of symbolic goods, of the agents involved in the processes of diffusion and mediatization of these goods, and of their modes of transmission or valorization. In this essay, I illustrate the effects of changing conditions on the specific field of 19th-century opera, one of the first international forms of cultural practice in Europe. I then consider the origins and causes of unequal cultural circulations in other fields, notably the presence or absence of mediators in these processes of circulation
