Expanding Access to CyberGIS-Compute through support for Heterogeneous Workflows
CyberGIS-Compute is a geospatial middleware tool designed to lower technical barriers to High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources. It provides end-users with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for submitting models to HPC and allows model developers to contribute their workflows by adding a manifest to their repositories. However, the simplification of the user interface and streamlining of model contribution have unintentionally limited the scope of models that could be run on CyberGIS-Compute. In this paper, we discuss recent developments to the CyberGIS-Compute project that are aimed at supporting a wider variety of workflows including performance enhancements, supporting additional configuration options for jobs, and allowing developers to contribute models without publishing the model on a public repository. We also introduce a case study that examines a CyberGIS-Compute model that benefits from each of these improvements
Building a Regional Library-Led Case Competition: Reflections from Librarians and Vendor Partners
Libraries are increasingly involved in supporting and facilitating case competitions, leading to competitions that emphasize decision-making and understanding of a larger ecosystem of information. This paper examines existing literature on the topics of librarian support for case competitions, the growing trend of library-led case competitions, and the expanded role of libraries in support of entrepreneurs, students, and faculty in entrepreneurial programs. The conversation is expanded through a discussion of the Midwest Entrepreneurship Case Competition (MECC), a library-led case competition that prioritized the participation of undergraduate students and grew from a local to a regional event. Vendor engagement, case development, competition format, timeline, and execution are shared and analyzed. Reflections from three stakeholders, including a first-time case competition planner, case competition judge, and vendor partner, enumerate MECC’s benefits to librarianship and student learning, approaches to information literacy, and opportunities for hands-on engagement in the development and marketing of tools. This research demonstrates the value of library-led case competitions as interventions for building transferable business information literacy skills and mechanisms for shaping and furthering collaboration among libraries, librarians, students, and vendors
Adaptive Segmentation of Thermal Anomalies in Buildings Using Human-in-the-Loop Active Learning Capsule Networks
Buildings account for 40% of energy consumption in the U.S., with significant energy losses stemming from poor insulation and leaks. To meet decarbonization goals by 2050, efficient methods for diagnosing and retrofitting thermal anomalies are essential. Infrared thermography (IRT), combined with emerging technologies like computer vision and deep learning, offers the potential for automating thermal anomaly detection and segmentation. However, challenges such as building diversity, scenario variations, and labor-intensive image annotation hinder model reliability and robustness. This study proposes a human-in-the-loop active learning approach to fine-tune the pretrained Capsule-based network (CapsLab) to enhance adaptability to new building scenarios efficiently. Using a Query-by-Committee (QBC) strategy, the method selects the most informative thermal images from a target dataset for expert verification and iterative model refinement. To streamline the expert annotation verification process, a weakly annotation strategy is introduced supporting human-in-the-loop training by Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC)-based superpixel segmentation and scribble prompts for efficient labeling. The pretrained CapsLab model is iteratively fine-tuned using these verified annotations to enhance segmentation performance. Three fine-tuning methods, including parameter freezing strategies, are evaluated for optimal results. This iterative workflow reduces annotation effort, improves model adaptability, and improves the precision of thermal anomaly segmentation, facilitating energy-efficient building retrofitting and maintenance

La emboscada postpoética de Agustín Fernández Mallo: física, cognición, contemporaneidad, entropía analyzes the poet’s proposal to rescue, with his Postpoetry, official poetry from its sclerotic stagnation due to its fidelity to worn-out premises, to recover a language connected with matter, and to renew its cognitive value. By means of byways (or drifting) through different disciplines, Postpoetry shares space with television, pop music, videos, the Internet, cinema, the arts, publicity, and the sciences, physics in particular. Postpoetry illuminates the intersection between the tranquility that tradition provides and the disquiet that comes with novelty. There is an ambush because, like Odysseus with the Trojan horse, the postpoet, although he is back from his adventures and much experienced, like the astute Homeric hero, often finds himself being ambushed by the recursiveness of its own tricks; however, he understands that all pronouncements entail their own refutation in the form of irony and parody. Everything rests on the uncertainty of which Werner Heisenberg spoke, or on the yin-yang in the complementarity of that other great quantum physicist, Niels Bohr. We readers are invited to participate in this odyssey where enigmas are never solved conclusively.

Prison Sentences: Spaces of Liberation in Arab Prison Writing
Spatial and temporal motifs predominate throughout the extensive corpus of Arabic prison writing. However, far from establishing the prison as an exceptional space, and periods of imprisonment as “time outside time,” this paper argues that modern Arabic prison literature tends instead to blur the distinction between “inside” and “outside” prison space and time. In place of a rigid spatial demarcation, dramatically exemplified by images of towering, razor wire-tipped walls, Arabic prison writing consistently seeks to create continuity between the punishment meted out to those within the prison’s walls and the repression endured by those beyond it. Consequently, these texts figuratively expand the prison walls to encompass the nation space in its entirety while simultaneously establishing the prison space as microcosm. Crucially, however, the significance of this erosion of the distinction between inside and outside the prison space is heavily mediated by gender. Whereas male authors’ narratives tend to encompass the space beyond the prison into the prison space to metaphorize the nation-space as prison-like under repressive dictatorial rule, women’s prison narratives ironically juxtapose the misogyny and patriarchal repression experienced in putatively “free” spaces beyond the prison with the opportunity to solidarity, camaraderie, and even niches of agency afforded by the all-women’s prison space and its limited insulation from the predations of patriarchy beyond the prison walls
Khairy Shalaby’s Novel \u3cem\u3eThe City of the Enslaved\u3c/em\u3e: Egyptian Prison Literature with a Russian Twist
Although the interconnectedness of Russian and Arabic literatures has been demonstrated by Soviet/Russian and, to a limited extent, Western Arabists, this research remains limited to a few names. However, the role that the Russian/Soviet literary tradition had in shaping contemporary genres of Arabic literature is complex and diverse. This is, for instance, the case with prison literature—Russian/Soviet literature has a long tradition of turning to the topic of imprisonment. It was Dostoyevsky, who turned to the genre of katorzhnaya proza (prison literature) and popularized it. Later, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Gorky dedicated a number of their influential literary works to further developing and redefining the questions related to imprisonment raised by Dostoyevsky. These four writers, whose works were translated into Arabic, were and still remain popular in the Arab world.One of the Arab writers, whose style was shaped to a large degree by the famous four Russians, was the renowned Egyptian writer Khairy Shalaby (1938-2011). In this paper, I cover the following points: 1. Provide a brief critical review of literary works of Khairy Shalaby and the role Russian/Soviet literature had in them; 2. Present The City of the Enslaved (2007), the only political novel by this prolific writer, dedicated to the topic of imprisonment and prison tortures of Egyptian political activists in the Sadat era; 3. Focus on particular themes in the novel that bear clear connotations of the themes raised in Russian/Soviet prison literature (the executioner-victim relationship, belief in transformation, and compassion for victim)
Exploring Modern Data Accessibility Surrounding Police-Involved Killings of Black Citizens
The need for greater data transparency regarding police-involved killings has been a recurring issue raised by scholars in the field. With limited means of using official policing data, research in the area of police-involved fatalities and other critical policing issues has relied on alternative data sources. While the government has historically failed to instill a mechanism for systematically collecting this information, the development of the Use-of-Force Data Collection in 2019 was an initial step in improving data transparency. The current study seeks to reassess the accessibility and utility of various data sources following the publication of the Use-of-Force Data Collection. To do so, the study examines and compares three types of data sources: official governmental data, newspaper data, and open-source data initiatives. Specifically, the current project provides a case study of information on officer-involved killings of black citizens across various platforms. Overall, the study concludes that recent efforts continue to fall short of data transparency needs in the field. Policy implications are also discussed
