Control Guidelines for Aggregate Drainage Layers and Evaluation of In Situ Permeability Testing Methods for Aggregates
This project examined the use of the light weight deflectometer (LWD) and the air permeameter test (APT) for control of the state of compaction and hydraulic conductivity of aggregate drainage layers. The investigation included an extensive program of LWDs, APTs, and nuclear density tests on two testing strips constructed at an experimental site—one on an untreated subgrade and the other on cement-treated subgrade, The project also included additional field tests at three construction sites in Indiana and a laboratory testing program for calibration and validation of the field data. Statistics and correlation studies of the collected data are presented and serve as a basis for assessing the testing methods and the influence of statistical sample size on the reliability of QA/QC outputs. The main outcomes address the spatial variability in the measured properties, the evaluation of materials and methods used to construct the strips, and the methods used for characterizing the layers. These findings highlight opportunities for assessing uncertainty, as measured by the dispersion of the data as part of a QA/QC campaign, and for reformulating guidelines in probabilistic terms
Dog-Friendly Workplaces: Understanding What Works and Lessons Learned Through Reflexive Thematic Analysis
The demand for pet-friendly practices has increased since the global pandemic, with some employees reporting a preference for working alongside their companion dogs. Despite increased scholarly interest in pet-friendly practices, gaps exist in understanding their real-world impact. This study examines companion-dog-friendly offices postpandemic, focusing on perceived antecedents and outcomes of pet-friendly practices. It aims to identify what works, what does not, and lessons learned. It draws on expertise from the animal welfare and the industrial, work, and organizational psychology sectors. Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilized semistructured, one-hour interviews with 14 participants who had experienced working in a dog-friendly office for a minimum of six months. The sample for this study comprised dog owners who brought their pet dogs to the office, dog owners who opted not to bring their pet dogs to the office, and non–dog owners who worked alongside colleagues who brought their pet dogs to the office. Analysis followed the six phases of reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019). The findings highlighted six pertinent themes relating to antecedents for sustainable pet-friendly practices and outcomes for organizations, teams, and individuals: (1) the impact of dog presence on well-being; (2) the need for organizational congruence with dog-friendly practices; (3) power dynamics engendered by dog-friendly practices; (4) presentation to the outside world; (5) continuous responsibility; (6) forethoughts and expectations. There was coherence across the six themes, regardless of the work environment, whether it was a corporate, nonprofit, or start-up setting. Interestingly, and perhaps unexpectedly, some of the non–dog owners in the participant sample emerged as among the strongest advocates for dog-friendly workplaces, while some dog owners’ discourse highlighted their reservations about an office full of multihousehold dogs. Dog ownership status does not appear to be indicative of a positive attitude toward a dog-friendly office environment. In conclusion, in the rapidly changing world of work, companion dogs have the innate ability to provide support to humans. The option to bring a companion dog to work can be considered an innovative and cost-effective reasonable adjustment. It can also be a component of an organizational well-being strategy. Dog-friendly office practices have the potential to be part of a broader corporate vision where organizations provide employees with choices in where, when, and how they work, thereby supporting individual needs and preferences
NSF collaborative Research: Developing Business Communication Skills in Manufacturing Technician Education
Promoting Innovation Via a University-Organized Online Hackathon
This article presents a study of a full-day, university-organized, online hackathon that aimed at designing solutions to problems raised in remote learning and teaching. The event, with about 80 participants, was carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic when many schools were closed and shifted to emergency remote teaching. The hackathon participants were challenged to design innovative solutions to authentic problems that have been raised during this situation. Using an online questionnaire, to which 28 of the hackathon participants responded, we quantitatively and qualitatively examined how the event had affected them. Findings suggest that participating in the hackathon mostly contributed to the participants\u27 recognition of the importance of collaboration, and their thinking about academy–society relations. These contributions were driven by the way the hackathon was designed and handled, and the fact that it was held online enabled some of its unique contributions. We also show that online, shorter-than-usual hackathon still has a meaningful, multi-faceted contribution to their participants, and conclude with recommendations for planning such events
Copy, Style, and Art Historians Scrutiny: A Journey from Aby Warburg back to C.F. Rumohr
This article examines J. A. Ramboux’s watercolor copies after Italian Renaissance artworks and their critical reception by art historians. Initially valued for documenting original masterpieces, Ramboux’s copies later drew criticism for stylistic deviations. The analysis reveals the subjective nature of stylistic interpretation and its varying significance in art history, from Rumohr to Warburg. By questioning the criteria for assessing fidelity and authenticity in copy paintings, the article encourages readers to rethink traditional stylistic evaluations and to consider how evolving perspectives shape our understanding of style in art replication.
Cet article examine les copies à l’aquarelle de J. A. Ramboux d’oeuvres de la Renaissance italienne et leur réception critique par les historiens d’art. D’abord valorisées pour leur capacité à documenter les originaux, ces copies ont été plus tard critiquées pour leurs déviations stylistiques. L’analyse révèle la subjectivité et l’importance variable du style dans l’histoire de l’art, de Rumohr à Warburg. 2024 Personal-sized Seedless Watermelon Cultivar Evaluation in Indiana
The annual watermelon cultivar evaluation trial is conducted at Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center (SWPAC) in Vincennes, Indiana. It evaluates yield, fruit quality, and overall plant performance of commercial watermelon cultivars and advanced breeding lines. Purdue Extension and seed companies financially support the trial. Jovial Family Farm Facilitates Intergenerational Learning Opportunities Through Urban Farming
Maera Williams is a sophomore in Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University. She joined the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Urban Farming team as a freshman and now serves as project manager of ten undergraduate students collaborating with Jovial Family Farm to design and develop three indoor hydroponics systems for a laboratory space on their property in Broad Ripple, IN. Jovial Family Farm is a nonprofit organization founded by Drs. Bobbie and Brian Jellison with the mission to provide senior citizens, their families, and their communities with meaningful engagement opportunities on an intergenerational scale through urban agricultural activities. Through the process of working alongside Jovial Family Farm, EPICS Urban Farming has been able to expand its partnerships to include Purdue Polytechnic High School, Westminster Village, Indiana University, Broad Ripple Elementary Schools, and Purdue Extension. The project will facilitate multigenerational educational opportunities and community engagement in indoor hydroponics systems. These systems will provide fresh produce on a year-round basis for community members, which will support the initiative to combat food insecurity in the Indianapolis area. By increasing accessibility to fresh produce and distributing healthy recipes, Jovial Family Farm works to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the community. The laboratory space will allow for research and testing of optimal conditions for growing greens and other specialty crops hydroponically. Through these initiatives, Jovial Family Farm is supporting service-learning through Purdue University’s EPICS program and fostering opportunities for a wide network of groups regardless of age, mobility, or experience level. Their continued support and involvement in this project have created an environment focused on experimentation, experiential learning, and hands-on engagement that reveals the invaluable experience of service-learning
