Impact of Weather Factors on Airport Arrival Rates: Application of Machine Learning in Air Transportation

    Get PDF
Weather is responsible for approximately 70% of air transportation delays in the National Airspace System, and delays resulting from convective weather alone cost airlines and passengers millions of dollars each year due to delays that could be avoided. This research sought to establish relationships between environmental variables and airport efficiency estimates by data mining archived weather and airport performance data at ten geographically and climatologically different airports. Several meaningful relationships were discovered from six out of ten airports using various machine learning methods within an overarching data mining protocol, and the developed models were tested using historical data

Improving Market Access with a Lean Approach to Quality

    Get PDF
The veterinary vaccine market in Africa is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13-15%, compared to the US at 4-6% and Europe at 5-7%. In Uganda, and its neighboring countries, the livestock sector is expected to grow significantly over the next few years. BRENTEC is a young start-up company that is keen to enter this growing market. To be competitive in this market, the company has to invest in robust quality systems that enable the manufacturing of high-quality products while keeping production costs low. This has not been the case with the launch of its first product, a vaccine against Newcastle disease in poultry. The product is formulated particularly for use in climate zone IV making it superior to most imports but is priced higher than the competition because of the high production costs associated with achieving consistently high-quality product. The objective of this project is to identify the critical process steps in the manufacturing cycle that are associated with these high production costs and, using advances in the field of vaccine production to improve these processes, lower their associated costs without compromising product quality. This will allow BRENTEC to price its product affordably to improve its market access and to achieve sustainability

Khi ăn, nhai kỹ (When eating, chew carefully): Poetry Collection

    Get PDF
In this poetry collection, I used my own experiences as a Vietnamese-American to present a realistic image of life in America as a minority. With the use of translanguaging and presentation of social norms in both Vietnamese and American cultures, my hope is to promote awareness of issues such as racism, colorism, body shaming, and language insecurity among Asian communities so that these problems can be healthily addressed. Khi ăn, nhai kỹ (When eating, chew carefully) is a Vietnamese proverb and is similar to the saying think before you speak, by naming the collection this, it serves as an underlying message throughout the poems

The Effectiveness of Individual and Group Canine-Assisted Interventions in Improving Mental Health in Higher Education Students

    Get PDF
The main aim of this study was to identify whether the social environment of canine-assisted intervention (CAI) influenced the beneficial effects on higher education (HE) students’ mental health. A second aim explored whether attachment style predicted the effect of being part of a CAI group. Sixty-seven participants interacted with a canine for two minutes, either individually, as part of a pair, or as a trio. Anxiety, stress, depression, and well-being were measured pre and post intervention, alongside attachment style. The results found no difference in the effectiveness of CAI when taking part individually, in pairs, or in a trio, meaning the social environment of CAI had no impact on the beneficial effects of CAI. Additionally, attachment style had no impact on the effectiveness of CAI when taking part in a trio. However, when taking part individually, a proximity seeking style predicted post depression, and in pairs, an insecure mistrust attachment style predicted post cheerfulness and feeling loved, and both insecure mistrust and proximity seeking styles predicted post confidence and relaxation. Overall, this study used a CAI group environment to explore the differences between taking part in CAI individually, in a pair, or as a trio in HE students and demonstrated that the social environment of CAI had no impact on its effectiveness in reducing anxiety, stress, and depression levels, or increasing well-being in the treatment group

LeTac-MPC: Learning Model Predictive Control for Tactile-Reactive Grasping

    Get PDF
Grasping is a crucial task in robotics, necessitating tactile feedback and reactive grasping adjustments for robust grasping of objects under various conditions and with differing physical properties. In this article, we introduce LeTac-MPC, a learning-based model predictive control (MPC) for tactile-reactive grasping. Our approach enables the gripper to grasp objects with different physical properties on dynamic and force-interactive tasks. We utilize a vision-based tactile sensor, GelSight (Yuan et al. 2017), which is capable of perceiving high-resolution tactile feedback that contains information on the physical properties and states of the grasped object. LeTac-MPC incorporates a differentiable MPC layer designed to model the embeddings extracted by a neural network from tactile feedback. This design facilitates convergent and robust grasping control at a frequency of 25 Hz. We propose a fully automated data collection pipeline and collect a dataset only using standardized blocks with different physical properties. However, our trained controller can generalize to daily objects with different sizes, shapes, materials, and textures. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. We compare LeTac-MPC with two purely model-based tactile-reactive controllers (MPC and PD) and open-loop grasping. Our results show that LeTac-MPC has optimal performance in dynamic and force-interactive tasks and optimal generalizability

Experimental investigation of an additively manufactured cold plate for multi-chip module cooling generated using the homogenization approach to topology optimization

    No full text
The homogenization approach to topology optimization is promising for generating high-performance, liquid-cooled cold plates due to its ability to create sub-resolution features by optimizing the spatial distribution and porosities of physical microstructures. This optimization capability has been demonstrated for the design of compact microchannel heat sinks under uniform heating conditions. However, there is a need to understand its applicability for practical applications involving complex boundary conditions posed by modern electronics packaging requirements. This work performs the topology optimization, design for manufacturing, fabrication, and experimental testing of a liquid-cooled cold plate for an application-representative multi-chip module with eight devices. The cold plate design requirements and boundary conditions involve eight equally spaced heat generating sources and liquid inlet/outlet ports that are off-center, introducing flow distribution challenges to the thermal design. A topology optimization algorithm is developed using the homogenization approach with circular pin fins chosen as the microstructure. An empirical permeability correlation for pin fins is developed which is implemented in the porous media flow model of the topology optimization algorithm to simulate pressure drop across additively manufactured pin fins. In addition to the topology optimized designs, a benchmark cold plate design with uniformly distributed 1.2 mm diameter pin fins, representative of the feature dimensions currently adopted in applications for the investigated boundary conditions, is also evaluated. Comparison of the topology optimized cold plate generated using the design freedom brought by additive manufacturing to the benchmark design highlights the optimizer’s ability to uniformly distribute the coolant amongst the heated regions. The maximum base temperature rise is 35.5 °C for the benchmark design versus 6.6 °C for the topology optimized design. Flow uniformity combined with the high convective heat transfer of the sub-resolution fins and channels in the vicinity of the heated regions keep the device temperatures low. The topology optimized cold plate is additively manufactured and experimentally tested at various flow rates. The experimental results match well with the model predictions, with a mean absolute percentage error of 5.5 % and 9.7 % for pressure drop and thermal resistance respectively, indicating that the optimal performance promised by the algorithm can be realized using additively manufactured parts. The work presented here demonstrates the overall process flow for the homogenization approach in leveraging the capabilities of additive manufacturing to generate high-performance liquid cold plates for practical applications

Understanding Engineering Design Fixation for K-12 Education

    Get PDF
Design fixation is a distinct and established research topic at a post-secondary level which has shown that practitioners of engineering in any capacity (e.g., K-12 students, engineering students, college professors, or professional engineers) can experience fixation. Some research has shown that elementary and secondary students exhibit signs of design fixation while working on engineering design challenges (Luo, 2017; Mentzer et al., 2015). This research brief provides a definition of design fixation, describe fixation in the K-12 classroom, and suggest additional needed research

Does STEM Integration in High School Mathematics Classes in Underserved Schools Benefit Students\u27 Standardized Testing Outcomes?

    Get PDF
STEM education in Indiana has become increasingly popular with, among many other factors, the recent focus by the Indiana Department of Education on the STEM workforce pipeline and school STEM certification (IDoE, 2023b). Some previous research has shown that integrating STEM into science classes and afterschool spaces has helped students from low-income communities catch up to their higher-income peers on assessments like high-stakes standardized testing (Bartell et al., 2008; Hurley, 2001; Weissglass, 2011). However, regarding STEM integration into mathematics classes, it can be more challenging than integration into other classes like science (Walker, 2016) and large gaps remain in the research of STEM integration into mathematics courses (English, 2016) . This study looks specifically at high school mathematics classrooms in a low-income community in Indiana. Mathematics-focused lessons with varying degrees of STEM components integrated were taught an average of one lesson every two weeks over an entire school year in a 9th grade Algebra classroom. Pre- and post- ACT Aspire scores were analyzed for growth, comparing students who received the STEM-integrated mathematics lessons and students who took the same course at the same school but received traditional, non-STEM mathematics courses. While the students who received the STEM integration improved on the ACT Aspire at a higher rate than the other students, the growth was not statistically significant. This study ends with suggestions for improving the methods for this specific study and other next steps in investigating the benefits of STEM integration in mathematics courses in schools from underserved communities
