    “There’s a connection that is just beyond words”: A Qualitative Study of Therapy Dogs in a Child Trauma Assessment Center

    The utilization of animal-assisted interventions with trauma survivors is a growing field of practice and research. This study explored staff perceptions of the impact of therapy dogs in comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessments of children who have experienced significant maltreatment. Such victimization causes devastating and long-term consequences across physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains. Trauma assessments have been used as a means of understanding the impacts of maltreatment and in guiding treatment. Following a go-along qualitative approach, the study occurred over 16 months wherein experienced therapy dogs were incorporated into assessments of 323 children. Data were collected through field interviews and participant observation. Inductive analysis generated four primary themes: rapport, regulation, respite, and restoration. Rapport involved establishing camaraderie with children at the start of the assessments, helping provide a sense of safety within the clinical environment. Regulation occurred throughout the various components of the assessment, wherein the dogs provided emotional, cognitive, and physical comfort throughout testing. Respite outside of testing was provided via rest and play. Finally, the dogs helped restore emotional and physical balance for children at the end of assessments, aiding their transition back to daily activities. Overall, the therapy dogs contributed to the ease, efficiency, and quality of the trauma assessments

    Cultural, Psychosocial, and Educational Factors in Relation to Ethnic Identity among Cambodian High School Students in the United States

    This study examined the relationship between preferred ethnic labels an cultural, psychosocial, and academic variables in a sample of 174 Cambodian high school students in the U.S. Results indicated that participants who chose “American” ethnic labels reported higher scores on White/Anglo orientation and on English language usage and fluency, whereas participants who chose the “Cambodian” ethnic label reported more Khmer language usage and frequency. Students who chose the combined “Cambodian American” ethnic label reported stronger beliefs in the utility of education and higher academic aspirations. The findings from this study expand the research on ethnic identity by focusing on 2nd generation Cambodian adolescents

    Apparatus and Methodology for Smart Trainer Homologation Analysis

    Virtual cycling engagement has seen a significant increase in the last decade, with a recognizable surge in 2020 due to the pandemic. To ensure a fair competition field, a testing apparatus was designed to test direct-drive bicycle smart trainers from various manufacturers. Smart trainers were tested for error on two main metrics: power measurement error and resistance error. Given that the integrity of virtual racing relies upon accurate power readings sent from the smart trainer to a cloud based competition software, discrepancies in these metrics are most likely to affect the outcome of an event. The testing apparatus used a motor in place of a human rider to control the repeatability and capability of the testing system. Power measurement consisting of a torque and rotational velocity sensor were connected to the motor output to determine the precise power delivered into a smart trainer. The known input power was compared to the power reported by the smart trainer as transmitted over the ANT+ wireless protocol and compared across the testing metrics. An electromagnetic brake system was incorporated to characterize the transmission losses from the motor to the smart trainer, enabling the accurate determination of the actual power input into the smart trainers. The testing procedure covered each virtual gradient ranging from -8% to 15% at every power level between 100 and 800 watts. The power reading error of smart trainers ranged from ≈0% to \u3e16 %, and the resistance error ranged from \u3c1% to over 100 %. These large errors show how critical homologation of smart trainers is for fair competition

    Critical race digital literacy rubric for assessing mis/disinformation literacy instruction lesson plans

    While librarians have been at the forefront of the fight against fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, offering invaluable guidance and tools through information literacy instruction, there is a noteworthy gap in the adoption of pedagogical approaches rooted in critical theory within mis/disinformation literacy lesson plans. This suggests there may not be well-defined or standardized frameworks for incorporating these theories into library instruction. The enclosed article explores Critical Race Digital Literacy (CRDL) as a pedagogical approach to mis/disinformation literacy education by proposing a rubric for assessing mis/disinformation lesson plans. The rubric is grounded in the principles of critical race theory, emphasizing the importance of addressing power dynamics, ideology, and systemic white supremacy in the digital landscape. Through the application of the CRDL rubric instructors are able to employ critically reflexive teaching and engage in continual self-assessment, fostering a culture of pedagogical deconstruction and reflection that shifts the focus from scoring to meaningful reflection and growth. The CRDL rubric has the potential to be used as a tool for transformative praxis, empowering librarians to navigate, question, and reshape the narrative within the ever-evolving landscape of information literacy

    CAV Systems Incorporating Air Pollution Information from Traffic Congestion

    The economic impact of air pollution due to motor vehicles by 2030 will be 100 billion dollars, and the public health impacts from traffic pollution will grow to 17 billion dollars. The transportation industry also faces the challenge of monitoring and controlling greenhouse gases (GHGs). CSU studied criteria air pollutants (CAPs)under different traffic congestion scenarios along selected freeways in Ohio. The study captured pollution intensities in different seasons, representing different atmospheric stabilities and concentrations of criteria air pollutants and greenhouse gases as a function of traffic densities. Our prior work determined typical hot spots in Ohio along freeways prone to high traffic densities and possible congestion. MOVES was used to generate these scenarios to assess vehicle emissions in a simulated traffic congestion scenario across interstate intersections. ODOT traffic data was used for these scenarios. The resulting air pollutants and greenhouse gases from emissions were determined using a dispersion model. Concentrations of the air pollutants were compared with NAAQS. An MS EXCEL-based model was developed to assess the severity of air pollution. Our methodology adequately provided a framework to estimate CAPs and GHGs across interstate interchanges where the traffic densities are high, and the congestion in these areas leads to elevated levels of these pollutants. We observed that long-haul trucks contribute to lower NOx levels and lower CO levels than their road and passenger cars counterparts. Morning traffic produced lower pollutant concentrations than those in the evenings. We built a model app to forecast air quality for congested areas (primarily interstate intersections) on freeways. CAV technology will be deployed to communicate information to travelers on freeways on radio channels approaching these congested areas. The mobile air quality app deployed on board CAV can update the models with traffic data to assess the lowering of emissions and GHGs due to replacing conventional vehicles with CAVs or those that run on renewables. CAV may facilitate vehicle-to-vehicle communications of air quality to alert vehicles approaching congested intersections
