French Left-wing Literary Theory and Mao Zedong Thought
French left-wing literary theories have continued to accept and interpret Mao Zedong’s thought (including his theories on literature and art) from the 1960s to today. This intellectual communication enabled the formation of Louis Althusser’s structural Marxism and contemporary left-wing literary theory. Mao’s theory of contradiction and his thoughts on reliance on the popular masses, aesthetics and politics, and people’s literature and art are the major intellectual resources for Louis Althusser’s, Alain Badiou’s, and Slavoj Žižek’s theories and are fully integrated into their theoretical system and critical practice. Althusser, Badiou, and Žižek innovated materialistic dialectics on the basis of Mao’s theory of contradiction, within which, however, there are misreadings. Meanwhile, Jacques Rancière integrates Mao’s theory of the mass line and his political views on literature and art into his own theories of politics of disagreement, distribution of the sensible, and politics of literature. Nevertheless, the Maoism recognized by the French left should not be equated with Mao Zedong Thought in China, as misreadings arising from “the Wind from the East” are inevitable
Sustainable Water Treatment Systems in the La Vega Region of the Dominican Republic
Purdue University\u27s service-learning course, Water Supply in Developing Countries (WSDC) is dedicated to ensuring access to safe drinking water in the La Vega region of the Dominican Republic. The focus in the current academic year is to enhance the functionality, sustainability, and independence of community-based water treatment systems installed by previous WSDC students. Despite the construction of four water systems since 2012, operational challenges ensued, rendering them currently inoperable. Our objective is to learn from past mistakes, restore the systems and ensure their continuous functionality. During the fall semester, class members assessed repair needs in two communities with existing systems, identified the root cause for inoperability, and are currently applying these insights as we plan a fifth system in Desecho. In the fall, a water supply well was successfully installed in Desecho. To further improve water supply and quality, the plan for the spring includes returning to Desecho to install the fifth treatment unit ensuring a continuous supply of clean water for the school
Technologies of Recovery and Discovery: The Poetics of “Artefacts”
This article discusses the ways that objects, specifically personal belongings, held in British collections have their stories muted to become imperial signifiers. Using two pieces of jewellery acquired in 1859 by David Livingstone, British missionary and traveller (1813-1873), a lip ring from a Mang’anja woman in present day Malawi and a bracelet from the Kafue valley in present day Zambia, this article evidences how digital tools can be used to layer, in a palimpsestic way, the information available about colonially collected objects, to locate them physically, in the space they inhabit, and narratively, in the space they create.

Ambosli National Park (Kenya) - Recommendations for Park Management and Regenerative Toursim
Amboseli National Park (ANP) in Kenya is now registered in the Tentative List for Natural World Heritage of UNESCO. This paper initially reviews the major challenges and issues of ANP released by Kenyan Wildlife Service and Amboseli Ecosystem Trust. Then, recommendations for benefit sharing with local communities, for opportunities for ROI in protected areas for conservation, for improvement of park & recreation management and sustainable tourism are proposed. This paper takes the holistic views recommending regional government to take actions “beyond ANP” for the total regional ecosystem, and also recommending regenerative tourism with high touch beyond sustainable tourism

Performance Evaluation of Power Transfer Roadways
In partnership with INDOT, Purdue University constructed two small-scale power transfer pavement sections at the Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) facility in spring of 2021 to assess construction procedures and analyze the pavement’s mechanical and thermal behavior. This presentation delves into the performance of both sections to date and explores their performance mechanics in preparation for the upcoming construction of the 1/4th mile DWPT road pilot project on US-231 (West Lafayette, IN) in the spring of 2024
Indianapolis White River Innovation District: BOT Success Story
When Elanco announced their headquarters will be at the former GM stamping plant site in Indianapolis, Indy DPW, IEDC and their partners needed to not only design roadway infrastructure, but also all-new utility infrastructure and a new bridge across the White River. When the build-operate-transfer procurement process became available for use by Indianapolis, the design teams and owners embraced the opportunity for a collaborative construction process on this transformative project
