    Ultrasonic Doppler as a guide for feline peripheral arterial catheterization

    Objectives The study aimed to determine if an ultrasonic Doppler-guided technique (UDGT) leads to improved placement efficacy (time, success) of feline dorsal pedal arterial catheters vs the traditional palpation-guided technique (TPT). Methods A total of 26 adult, client-owned cats requiring sedation or general anesthesia for any reason, aged \u3e12 months and weighing \u3e3.0 kg, and with Doppler blood pressure measurements of at least 80 mmHg were enrolled. Each hindlimb was randomly assigned for dorsal pedal arterial catheterization using either the UDGT or TPT. With the UDGT, the location of the artery was identified by an audible sound using the Doppler. Successful catheter placement was confirmed by visualization of an arterial pressure waveform using a transducer and monitor system attached to the catheter. The Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test were used to compare the two techniques. Results The overall proportion of successful arterial catheterization was 17% (9/52): 19% (5/26) via UDGT and 15% (4/26) via TPT. Among successful arterial catheterizations (n = 9), the mean time to catheterization was 339 ± 198 s: 328 ± 237 s (n = 5) with UDGT and 353 ± 171 s (n = 4) with TPT. The log-rank test showed the two techniques were not significantly different in likelihood of successful arterial catheter placement or time to successful catheterization (P = 0.698). An arterial flash occurred in 62% (32/52) of the limbs, 58% (15/26) with the UDGT and 65% (17/26) with the TPT. Complications (self-limiting bruising, hematoma formation) were observed equally between UDGT (3/26 limbs) and TPT (3/26 limbs) in six cats. Conclusions and relevance The UDGT did not improve the efficacy of catheter placement compared with the TPT. Few complications were associated with arterial catheterization

    Machine embroidery of light-emitting textiles with multicolor electroluminescent threads

    Advances in electroluminescent threads, suitable for weaving or knitting, have opened doors for the development of light-emitting textiles, driving growth in the market for flexible and wearable displays. Although direct embroidery of these textiles with custom designs and patterns could offer substantial benefits, the rigorous demands of machine embroidery challenge the integrity of these threads. Here, we present embroiderable multicolor electroluminescent threads—in blue, green, and yellow—that are compatible with standard embroidery machines. These threads can be used to stitch decorative designs onto various consumer fabrics without compromising their wear resistance or light-emitting capabilities. Demonstrations include illuminating specific messages or designs on consumer products and delivering emergency alerts on helmet liners for physical hazards. Our research delivers a comprehensive toolkit for integrating light-emitting textiles into trendy, customized crafts tailored to the unique requirements of diverse flexible and wearable displays

    INDOT Project Change Orders: Root Causes and Recommendations

    This study analyzed the historical trends in change orders (COs) associated with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) highway contracts. It also investigated correlations between COs and base factors (district, project type, contract type, award amount, geographical area (rural vs. urban)), and sought to understand the effect of the root causes but not to predict CO based on root causes. Unlike the base factors, the root causes are unknown prior to construction. The study developed models that forecasted CO characteristics—CO likelihood, CO frequency (count), and CO severity (magnitude) and CO impacts (cost overrun and schedule delay). To address these research questions, the study used INDOT’s 2010–2020 highway contract data involving approximately 5,000 contracts worth just over 10B.TheCOtrendsandpatterns(includingrootcauses)wereanalyzedforfiveprojecttypesatthesixhighwayadministrativedistrictsinIndiana.ThestudyidentifiedthebasefactorsthatgenerallyhavehigherpropensitytoexperiencemorefrequentandsevereCOsandanalyzedCOimpactsoncostandscheduleoverruns.Theresultsindicatedthat6510B. The CO trends and patterns (including root causes) were analyzed for five project types at the six highway administrative districts in Indiana. The study identified the base factors that generally have higher propensity to experience more frequent and severe COs and analyzed CO impacts on cost and schedule overruns. The results indicated that 65% of the contracts had at least 1 CO; 30% had at least 5 COs; 10% had at least 12 COs; and 4% had over 20 COs. The study also analyzed the CO impacts by the dominant root causes: changed conditions (9,544 COs, 266M); errors and omissions (6,507 COs, 139M);scopechanges(2,371COs,139M); scope changes (2,371 COs, 109M), and final quantity adjustments (cost adjustment) ($193M). The top five root causes of the COs in each district were identified and good practices and guidelines to help mitigate the incidence and severity of change orders were developed. The study’s diagnostic analysis and prediction models are useful in project planning and management because they (a) help identify the factors that impact CO likelihood, count, and monetary severity, and (b) can enable more reliable forecasting of project cost and schedule. Overall, the study results can help INDOT achieve its strategic goal of “on-time and on-budget project delivery.” The effective management of change orders aligns with specific provisions that recur across previous and current federal legislation (the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act), which emphasize efficient project management and adherence to budgets and timelines in infrastructure development

    This paper offers an American perspective on the term Mudéjar, examining debates in the study of American colonial art and architecture from the 20th century to the present day. It delves into the debates surrounding its stylistic classification and the resulting ambiguities associated with linking all geometric forms to Islamic aesthetics. The paper concludes that the current application of the term in architectural studies has overlooked criticisms from visual culture studies, which tend to ignore the constructive and design-specific aspects where Mudéjar might hold greater stylistic legitimacy. Este artículo presenta una perspectiva americana sobre el término Mudéjar, examinando los debates en los estudios sobre arte y arquitectura colonial americana desde el siglo XX hasta la actualidad. Se profundiza en las discusiones sobre su clasificación estilística y las ambigüedades resultantes del uso de vincularlo todo forma geométrica a la estética islámica.
