    Engaging Students and Alumni Through Executives in Residence

    Over the course of 10 years, Residential Academic Initiatives at Purdue University has invited 57 prominent alumni to return to live on campus and engage in meaningful interactions with students as a part of its Executive in Residence program. In this session, the director of the program and a faculty member will share their experiences in launching and growing the program, identifying and recruiting alumni to participate, structuring their visits to maximize their impact on students, and collaborating with learning community faculty to integrate the alumni into teaching that results in purposeful and immersive learning opportunities for students. Specific examples will be shared with lessons that were learned and best practices that were developed

    CLCWeb Special Issue: The Peripheral Jameson

    CLCWeb Special Issue: The Peripheral Jameson “Always Totalize,” as Clint Burnham notes, could be one of the mottos of Fredric Jameson’s work: a commitment to drawing—always partial—connections between seemingly disparate fragments of reality into a contradictory unity, one that is never fully present. But how are we to make sense of totalization in the periphery of capitalism? This periphery is where the totality of global capitalism is more readily intuited, to draw on another argument by Jameson. Thus, one could argue that peripheral contexts are where the act of totalization more directly confronts totality itself. This issue seeks to interrogate the significance of Jameson’s work outside the American and Western-European contexts, asking how it might help explain phenomena in the periphery of the capitalist world system; or, conversely, how might the latter rewrite Jameson’s elaborations. This overarching question generates multiple lines of inquiry. One of which, for example, has to do with the relationship of geopolitics, and politics, to totalization. Reflecting on Jameson’s schematization in The Political Unconscious, we can ask: was the political ever truly unconscious in the periphery? How might the older debate around Jameson’s notion of national allegory be updated, given neo-imperialist realities and decolonial theorizations? With the decline of the US and Europe, how is the practice of totalization—literary and critical—reshaped in the periphery? And if, according to Jameson, the capitalist totality can be intuited in art and culture, does it do so similarly today inside and outside the capitalist core? Another set of questions is related to the notion of postmodernity and periodization, central to Jameson’s reflections on totality. How does Jameson’s insistence that modernity is singular, rather than plural, affect the way one periodizes culture on the periphery, given its singular trajectories in different peripheral situations? In what ways can recent discussions of peripheral realism, modernism, and postmodernism be brought into dialogue with Jamesonian periodization? How do the history of certain genres in the periphery surprisingly affirm—or push back against—Jameson’s reflections on genre histories, such as Science Fiction or the Utopian novel? Yet another set of questions directly engages with methodology or theory. For example, how can Jameson’s four-fold allegorical model be actualized in peripheral cultural contexts? What models of dialectical interpretations that rise out of peripheral contexts have in common with the Jamesonian “method,” if such method exists? How does Jameson’s work on the novel in the age of globalization relate to other theorizations of world literature, which necessarily address peripheral and semiperipheral realities? If, for Jameson, culture’s mode of generating knowledge resides today less in its documentary aspect or in its overt engagement with ideology, but in the “content of form” of art—that historical transformations of artistic form and its contradictions—how can other theoretical accounts of art at the periphery be brought into dialogue with it? This special issue of CLCWeb, honoring the great North American critic, invites scholars who engage cultural contexts outside the American and Western-European to reflect on Jameson’s work. Contributions are welcome in the form of essays, articles, interviews, and other genres. Comparative approaches to other thinkers are also welcome. Contributions must be original and can address, among other topics: Reflections on Jameson’s work from peripheral perspectives; The reception of Jameson’s work in specific peripheral and semi-peripheral contexts; Peripheral realism, modernism, and postmodernism; New considerations on the Jameson-Ahmad debate; The relation of local realities to historical totality; Dialectical interpretation in peripheral contexts and its relation to Jameson work; Jamesonian allegory and the Greimassian rectangle in the periphery; Totality and totalization in peripheral situations; Genre, historicity, and periodization in the periphery.     Generation of Coastal Area DEMs Using Oblique Stereo Imagery from Non-Metric Cameras with SfM Techniques

    This study focuses on the the development of a method to create Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for forecasting coastal inundation, a critical tool in the face of rising sea levels and extreme weather events. The study utilizes oblique stereo imagery captured with non-metric cameras, focusing on the area adjacent to Horace Caldwell pier in Port Aransas, Texas. The methodology involves the strategic placement of two Amcrest Ultra4K non-metric cameras on an elevated structure at the pier entrance. These cameras, positioned 8 meters above the ground and 20 meters apart, capture images at varying nadir angles high oblique (65 degrees), oblique (45 degrees), and less oblique (35 degrees). The project addresses the challenge of generating accurate DEMs from oblique stereo images, a task complicated by the fact that most existing software and techniques are designed for vertical imagery. Our method employs Structure from Motion (SfM) using stereo oblique images and non-metric cameras mounted on a coastal pier to create the DEMs. Key to the methodology is the careful calibration and application of advanced image processing techniques suited for high oblique imagery. Image processing-based methods use include wavelet transform for enhanced feature matching and clarity enhance ment, as well as rectification and georeferencing within MATLAB and ArcGIS Pro environments, respectively, to maintain true to-life spatial proportions in the images. The accuracy of the generated DEM was validated against 14 RTK-GPS check point observations collected biweekly on the beach, using terrestrial surveying based on a 5x5 meter grid. The accuracy of the DEMs generated with images taken at 35-, 45-, and 65-degree angles were respectively 0.53 feet, 0.61 feet and 0.73 feet.     Building Blocks for Geospatial Software Education Using the I-GUIDE Platform

    By combining advanced cyberinfrastructure with geospatial analysis capabilities and resources in an accessible online environment, the I-GUIDE Platform has great potential for geospatial computing focused education. However, learning occurs in different settings and contexts, both formal and informal. For I-GUIDE Platform to be successful, it should have the flexibility to support a variety of educational needs. In this paper, we argue for an expanded set of front-end building blocks to support diverse education and research use-cases, building on existing cyberGIS capabilities and Jupyter backend. We draw from experience working with the CyberGISX platform as an education tool in different learning contexts to suggest a series of front-end building blocks to best leverage the powerful combination of cyberinfrastructure and geospatial resources for flexible and adaptable educational needs

    Dynamics of nanocluster aerosol in the indoor atmosphere during gas cooking

    Nanocluster aerosol (NCA: particles in the size range of 1–3 nm) are a critically important, yet understudied, class of atmospheric aerosol particles. NCA efficiently deposit in the human respiratory system and can translocate to vital organs. Due to their high surface area-to-mass ratios, NCA are associated with a heightened propensity for bioactivity and toxicity. Despite the human health relevance of NCA, little is known regarding the prevalence of NCA in indoor environments where people spend the majority of their time. In this study, we quantify the formation and transformation of indoor atmospheric NCA down to 1 nm via high-resolution online nanoparticle measurements during propane gas cooking in a residential building. We observed a substantial pool of sub-1.5 nm NCA in the indoor atmosphere during cooking periods, with aerosol number concentrations often dominated by the newly formed NCA. Indoor atmospheric NCA emission factors can reach up to ∼1016 NCA/kg-fuel during propane gas cooking and can exceed those for vehicles with gasoline and diesel engines. Such high emissions of combustion-derived indoor NCA can result in substantial NCA respiratory exposures and dose rates for children and adults, significantly exceeding that for outdoor traffic-associated NCA. Combustion-derived indoor NCA undergo unique size-dependent physical transformations, strongly influenced by particle coagulation and condensation of low-volatility cooking vapors. We show that indoor atmospheric NCA need to be measured directly and cannot be predicted using conventional indoor air pollution markers such as PM2.5 mass concentrations and NOx (NO + NO2) mixing ratios

    Self-consistent Atmosphere Representation and Interaction in Photon Monte Carlo Simulations

    We present a self-consistent representation of the atmosphere and implement the interactions of light with the atmosphere using a photon Monte Carlo approach. We compile global climate distributions based on historical data, self-consistent vertical profiles of thermodynamic quantities, spatial models of cloud variation and cover, and global distributions of four kinds of aerosols. We then implement refraction, Rayleigh scattering, molecular interactions, and Tyndall–Mie scattering to all photons emitted from astronomical sources and various background components using physics first principles. This results in emergent image properties that include: differential astrometry and elliptical point spread functions (PSFs) predicted completely to the horizon, arcminute-scale spatial-dependent photometry variations at 20 mmag for short exposures, excess background spatial variations at 0.2% due to the atmosphere, and a PSF wing due to water droplets. We use a common atmosphere representation framework to self-consistently model all phenomena by simulating individual photons. We reproduce the well-known correlations in image characteristics: correlations in altitude with absolute photometry (overall transmission) and relative photometry (spectrally dependent transmission), anticorrelations of altitude with differential astrometry (nonideal astrometric patterns) and background levels, and an anticorrelation in absolute photometry with cloud depth. However, we also find further subtle correlations including an anticorrelation of temperature with background and differential astrometry, a correlation of temperature with absolute and relative photometry, an anticorrelation of absolute photometry with humidity, a correlation of humidity with lunar background, a significant correlation of PSF wing with cloud depth, an anticorrelation of background with cloud depth, and a correlation of lunar background with cloud depth
