    Tumult, Terror, and Tripping: The Roles of Psychedelics and Radical Politics in the Counterculture

    From the immense political upheaval of the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests to the advent of the hippie counterculture and its psychedelic aesthetic, the 1960s is commonly conceptualized as a significantly transformative period in American history, socially, culturally, and politically. While this is certainly an accurate observation, the political and cultural shifts that occurred within this period are typically approached as separate, if not disparate, segments within the development of the period. The counterculture is often approached solely within the confines of its art, aesthetics, bohemian lifestyle, and perhaps most ubiquitously, the use of psychedelic drugs. As a result, the political aspect of the counterculture, while acknowledged, is rarely acknowledged to its full extent. However, when more closely examining the growth of protest throughout this period—particularly in the unprecedented growth of white, middle-class allyship—the spheres of counterculture, activism, and eventually revolutionary radicalism, become one. When approaching these segments as one—with particular consideration extended to drug use of the counterculture and the gradual escalation in methods of resistance and protest—a number of incisive, unanswered questions arise. What led this population of white, middle-class youth to activism and later, political violence? To what extent did their frequent use of mind-expanding drugs shift their political feelings, ideologies, and actions? Given the degree of youth mobilization within this period, why is our common conceptualization of the hippie as purely hedonic and latently politically active? What do we stand to learn from this first mass foray of white youth into activism and allyship

    This is the 2024 Fall report of Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT) Week. IMPACT was created in 2010, and is a large collaborative initiative on the Purdue West Lafayette campus involving multiple key partners across campus including the Office of the Provost, Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE), Purdue Online (PO), Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies (Libraries), the Evaluation and Learning Research Center (ELRC), and Institutional Data Analytics and Assessment (IDA+A). IMPACT works with instructors to redesign large enrollment, foundational courses with the aim of engaging students more fully in their learning and creating a more student-centered environment, with the expectation that this will improve student success. IMPACT Week is a self-paced, hybrid version of the IMPACT program

    Wildlife Science Education for Grades 3–12

    Wildlife Science Education for Grades 3–12 guides and encourages youth to learn about the wildlife around them. The first section introduces the basic wildlife groups to youth in upper elementary school using hands-on and other activity-based learning techniques. Young learners will understand the similarities and differences between mammals, birds, fish, and herptiles. The activities for middle schoolers expand the study to interactions within and between them. The lessons for high school students are based on topics of importance to homeowners, residents of a watershed, food and fiber producers (farmers), mayors, teachers, and policy makers. This section delves deeper into the study of wildlife and will help prepare students to study these topics at the college or university level. This final section is intended for adults who work with youth.     Autonomous Mower Pilot Project

    The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) spends approximately $19 million annually on roadside mowing, which is a process that is time-consuming, costly, and poses safety risks. Automated mowing solutions have the potential to reduce costs and increase safety, but they will need to be extremely well tested before being deployed. In this work, data from current mowing practices was collected using machine mounted cameras, which was used to inform the creation of a digital twin environment that allows for rigorous initial testing of potential autonomous solution with no risk. The digital twin was created using digital elevation models of Indiana highway corridors and geolocated features to create a high-fidelity test environment. Algorithms including path planning, obstacle avoidance, and road entry detection were created and tested in a simulation and validated in a real-world environment. Results showed that the digital twin was able to simulate real-world conditions and accurately demonstrate how the algorithms performed
