Experiencing the Business Library with the Grow Irish Program
This lightning talk highlights the role of the Thomas Mahaffey Jr. Business Library in empowering graduate students participating in an experiential immersion program referred to as Grow Irish. The Grow Irish program at the Mendoza College of Business sends students for a week to work directly with domestic and international companies on real world issues facing the business environment. Recognizing the diverse and complex challenges posed by collaborating with domestic and international companies with a tight turnaround time, the business librarians create specialized research dossiers tailored to each specific project. For international teams, the librarians also provide cultural memos to inform the students of the customs and etiquette of their host countries.
These curated dossiers act as foundational knowledge hubs, tailored to the assigned business problem. Prior to the students\u27 travels, the librarians also provide a brief primer instruction session showcasing navigation of the dossiers in addition to the restrictions on resource sharing with their assigned companies. This targeted approach saves students valuable time and ensures they begin their projects with a robust and focused information base while respecting the terms and conditions of commercial content provided by the library. This enables the students to better focus on the primary learning outcomes of the course centering experiential and networking elements.
This talk will detail the ways in which the librarians engage with the Grow Irish program as a case for other business librarians seeking opportunities to successfully embed themselves into specific program stakeholders
Synthesis Study: Review of Durability and Performance of the Latest Epoxy-Coated Rebar
The use of de-icing salts on roads during the winter months has caused corrosion damage to bridge reinforcements, which has increased maintenance costs. The corrosion protection system most widely used by various State Departments of Transportation is a combination of quality concrete, adequate cover, and fusion bonded epoxy-coated reinforcing bars. This report contains a summary of the latest developments in the fabrication and use of fusion epoxy-coated and Allium (stainless steel coated) reinforcing steel within concrete bridge decks and one-way solid slab and T-beam bridges. The study findings indicate that although original epoxy materials are still used, significant improvements in the fabrication and handling of the epoxy-coated bars have significantly improved the corrosion protection of reinforcements. Findings from a literature review and survey responses from a questionnaire of state DOTs indicate that although DOTs view epoxy-coated reinforcement as effective, they continue to look for alternatives to improve corrosion protection
Application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks on crop yield prediction at multiple scales
Accurately predicting crop yields is a critical challenge in sustainable agriculture, food security, and farm management. Traditional process-based models rely on agronomic domain knowledge, crop physiology and statistical approaches, while purely data-driven approaches leverage machine learning or deep learning models using meteorological and spatial data. Unfortunately, these black-box models(Data-drive approaches) often lack interpretability and fail to incorporate well-established physical principles. This project explores a hybrid approach by implementing Physics Informed Neural Networks, mainly, physics-based recurrent neural networks (PI-RNNs) for time-series yield prediction. PINNs allow for the integration of scientific knowledge directly into the model by embedding physical laws as constraints in the loss function. This enables the network to learn from both data and domain-specific rules, improving generalizability and interpretability. In this study, we apply PINNs to predict winter wheat yield in the states of Kansas and Oklahoma. This is done by utilizing meteorological data, and remote sensing input taken from the Cybench dataset and AgERA-5 datasets. We attempt to mainly utilize Harvest Index, and Radiation use efficiency and constrain them in physical ranges obtained by previous domain knowledge. Furthermore, we penalize the machine learning model based on both a data loss and a physics based loss, which is calculated by the distance between the constrained variables and its set range decided based on domain knowledge. By combining these insights with machine learning, this research aims to apply a more reliable, interpretable, and scientifically grounded yield prediction framework. Future work in this area would involve trying to apply similar techniques to more complex models, including time-series transformers or applying established Differential Equations to ML algorithms and utilizing a similar loss scheme

Contributing Factors to Low Airspeed on Climb-out as a Precursor to Loss of Control in Flight
The nature of aviation is not without inherent risk. Conducting training flight operations increases these inherent risks. Flight data monitoring and voluntary safety action programs seek to reduce risk, as seen in their success at commercial airlines. These successes are slowly permeating into general aviation through programs such as the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID). The NGAFID is a program funded by the Federal Aviation Administration that allows general aviation operators to have the ability to collect and share de-identified flight data on an aggregate level to identify trends and increase safety margins during flight operations. This study seeks to use data from the NGAFID to determine if the type of takeoff (initial flight takeoff, touch and go, stop and go, go-around) performed by the flight crew led to a lower indicated airspeed in a low airspeed event during climb-out. Using 262 individual low airspeed events on climb-out within the NGAFID, this study determined that a stop-and- go takeoff led to the lowest airspeed during climb-out, which could increase the chance for a stall or spin. This study also determined that low airspeed events while the aircraft was turning did not have a significant impact on the severity of the airspeed during the event. This information is critical for flight instructors to create increased awareness of airspeed during critical phases of flight to reduce the possibility of a stall/ spin condition. Additional research is needed in the field to further reduce the fatality rate for low airspeed and stall/spin conditions. Dashboarding tools within the NGAFID can be created to further research and create methods for instructor-led student debriefings in real time regarding performance during a flight training event
Spatio-Visual Reasoning and Teamwork through Hands-On STEM Construction Activities
This study examined a STEM activity in which students in grades K-6 designed and built a model of Snoopy’s doghouse with considerations for constraints, teamwork, and iterative design. By combining spatial reasoning with imagination and visualization, students collaborated to create 3-D structures from 2-D plans, demonstrating enhanced spatial visualization and the ability to connect geometry to a tangible engineering task. The findings highlight the value of spatio-visual design activities in promoting skills like spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving
The Absurdity of Liberation in Moroccan Prison Narratives
Moroccan prison narratives have been credited with major political and social changes, yet their existential value is equally worth acknowledging. The prison narratives of Aziz Binebine, Mohamed Raiss, Malika Oufkir, and Fatna El Bouih, to mention but a few, are fraught with existentialist patterns that are uncovered upon reading them comparatively. One pattern that persists through these narratives is the absurdity of liberation. Borrowing Camus’ concept of the absurd, this article highlights the absurdity of the post-prison chapter for being nothing more than an extension of the prison episode that makes the impossibility of freedom acutely felt. The absurdity of liberation is especially manifested in the clash between the prisoner’s post-prison expectations and the world’s bitter indifference. This article paints the post-prison prisoner as an authentic being who emerges existentially conscious from the unbearable darkness of the prison ordeal. It also shows how such authenticity, although intensifying the sense of alienation, offers the prisoner two diametrically opposed antidotes to alienation; “integrative” and “antagonistic” authenticity. By borrowing and applying existentialist concepts in its reading of the abovementioned narratives, this article gives prison narratives a new reading to foreground the existentialism of the post-prison experience
The Economics and Productivity of US Cow-Calf Production
We explore US beef cow-calf production in 2018 and estimate net returns, returns to scale, and technical efficiency associated with backgrounding versus nonbackgrounding by size and production system. We determine the relative profitability of cow-calf operations by type, region, and size. Results, using both stochastic production frontier analysis and data envelopment analysis, indicate that larger operations tend to be more scale and technically efficient than smaller operations. While larger operations may be more scale and technically efficient and have lower variable costs per cow, off-farm income helps smaller operations become competitive. The availability of detailed cost of production information in the 2018 Agricultural Resource Management Survey of cattle and calves survey also facilitates identifying competitiveness by region and size as well as important efficiency drivers
Editors’ Introduction to the 20th Anniversary Volume
2025 is a momentous year as we launch Volume 20—and thus celebrate—the 20th Anniversary of the Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement (JSAAEA)! For two decades now JSAAEA has provided readers from all over the world with an interdisciplinary online academic peer-reviewed journal featuring scholars and writers from diverse fields who share a common interest in Southeast Asian (SEA) Americans and their communities. And it has done so through a completely free and fully accessible Open Access publishing model without any author publishing fees or reader subscription charges. 2025 also marks another important historical milestone—the 50th anniversary of significant Southeast Asian refugee resettlement in the United States in the devastating aftermath of America’s war in Southeast Asia
