Discussion of Low-Carbon Development Pathways in Shanghai urban-rural development area
The urban-rural development area, as one of China\u27s key sectors, plays a crucial role in achieving China\u27s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. As a mega-city, Shanghai faces even more severe challenges in energy conservation and carbon reduction in the construction field. According to relevant statistical data, since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the scale of construction and carbon emissions during the operation phase of buildings in Shanghai have shown a continuous growth trend, with the total carbon emissions from residential buildings growing faster than those from public buildings, while the carbon emissions per unit area of public buildings are gradually decreasing. With the gradual replacement of oil and other energy sources by electricity and natural gas, the proportion of direct carbon emissions of buildings in Shanghai is continuously declining. To better analyze the main influencing factors and trends of carbon emissions of buildings in Shanghai, a new equation based on the transformation of the Kaya identity is proposed. Different scenarios, including a baseline scenario, an energy-saving scenario, and an enhanced carbon reduction scenario, are set up to predict the effects of various measures. The results ultimately indicate that improving building energy efficiency, optimizing the energy structure of buildings, and low-carbon energy transition are conducive to achieving the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality in the construction sector. Therefore, this paper explores the development path of Shanghai urban-rural development area from these aspects
A Whole Life Cycle Approach to Circular Economy Interventions in the Residential Sector: Systematic Literature Review
The residential sector is responsible for substantial resource consumption, waste generation, and pollutant emissions. This is largely due to the conventional linear economy model, which relies on resource extraction and generates significant waste and emissions through a take-make-dispose approach. This linear market approach is incompatible with a low-carbon future. In contrast, the Circular Economy (CE) promotes a sustainable closed-loop system that prolongs and optimises resource utilisation, benefiting economic, environmental, and social domains as required for a low-carbon future. The concept of CE remains under-explored in the residential sector. This paper presents a systematic literature review of existing CE interventions in the housing sector. This review analysed 50 published papers identifying thirteen CE interventions among seven building layers, and four life cycle stages. In particular, the analysis identified research gaps in integrating CE concepts across construction layers and whole life cycle stages. The findings of this paper support academia, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in understanding how fragmented CE interventions can be implemented holistically and practically in the residential sector globally
Dynamics and Synergistic Mechanism of Green Building Transition: Helix Model and Helix Culture
The Green Building Transition (GBT) represents a critical long-term socio-technical shift towards sustainable modes of production and consumption in urban areas. However, a research gap exists in comprehending the intrinsic motivations and synergies among stakeholders involved in promoting and implementing green building practices. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the dynamics of GBT by introducing a novel theoretical framework based on Leydesdorff and Etzkowitz\u27s Helix model. The results indicate a deficiency in the existing GBT frameworks regarding the comprehensive comprehension of interactions among multi-level key stakeholders involved, as well as the absence of a quantitative assessment of GBT dynamics. This study highlights the capacity of the Helix model to address these deficiencies. By utilizing the Helix model, observable relationships and configurations within the GBT system are explained, Illuminating how various sectors\u27 cultural and operational contexts influence evolution. Additionally, the paper introduces a prospective methodology for quantifying transition dynamics. The quantitative methodology utilizes co-author relationships within annual publications in the field of green building to compute mutual information, serving as an indicator of helix interactions. This approach quantifies uncertainty, thereby elucidating the dynamics of emerging relationship risks and innovation incentives within the systems. The study will contribute to addressing practical challenges and promoting future green building initiatives that align with the Sustainable Development Goals
Identifying Uncertainty in Interpreting Building Regulations through Conservative, Pragmatic, and Romantic Perspectives
This article examines the critical issue of uncertainty in the construction industry, particularly in the realm of automated building code compliance. The study explores Fallman’s framework on how different design perspectives, Conservative, Pragmatic, and Romantic, impact the perception and management of uncertainty within building projects. A theoretical framework based on Fallman\u27s design accounts was employed to guide semi-structured interviews with industry professionals, uncovering how uncertainty influences design and regulatory processes, particularly in the context of building permits. Findings demonstrate that each design perspective offers unique strengths and limitations in handling uncertainty: Conservative approaches favour strict rule adherence, Pragmatic strategies emphasize flexibility and contextual adaptation, and Romantic approaches highlight creative problem-solving and intuition. The study underscores the need to integrate these diverse perspectives to enhance the effectiveness of automated rule-checking systems in construction. By acknowledging and balancing these perspectives, the research offers valuable insights for both construction professionals and policymakers, aiming to improve project outcomes, streamline regulatory compliance, and support the integration of uncertainty into digital tools. This nuanced understanding of uncertainty presents opportunities for more adaptive and efficient construction practices

XYY: Why? Science for the People and the XYY Controversy
The mid-20th century saw a boom of scientific discoveries in genetics as people sought to understand the American political landscape through genomes. The desire to understand criminality through genetics rose as counterculture surged. The genetic defect known as “XYY syndrome” became connected to criminality through biased medical studies and sensationalized criminal cases worldwide. When the National Institute of Mental Health began to fund studies attempting to prove a link between XYY syndrome and criminality, organizations concerned with scientific justice took notice. The leftist organization Science for the People campaigned against an XYY study in Boston, deeming it unethical and biologically deterministic. Science for the People’s campaigns against the Boston study gained public attention, leading to enough advocacy to halt the study. Public outcry against the supposed correlation between XYY syndrome and criminality, led by Science for the People, reshaped the debates surrounding genetic links to criminality

Experiencing the Business Library with the Grow Irish Program
This lightning talk highlights the role of the Thomas Mahaffey Jr. Business Library in empowering graduate students participating in an experiential immersion program referred to as Grow Irish. The Grow Irish program at the Mendoza College of Business sends students for a week to work directly with domestic and international companies on real world issues facing the business environment. Recognizing the diverse and complex challenges posed by collaborating with domestic and international companies with a tight turnaround time, the business librarians create specialized research dossiers tailored to each specific project. For international teams, the librarians also provide cultural memos to inform the students of the customs and etiquette of their host countries.
These curated dossiers act as foundational knowledge hubs, tailored to the assigned business problem. Prior to the students\u27 travels, the librarians also provide a brief primer instruction session showcasing navigation of the dossiers in addition to the restrictions on resource sharing with their assigned companies. This targeted approach saves students valuable time and ensures they begin their projects with a robust and focused information base while respecting the terms and conditions of commercial content provided by the library. This enables the students to better focus on the primary learning outcomes of the course centering experiential and networking elements.
