This work tries to retrieve the obtain knowledge from a participatory guarantee system (PGS) to support the agroecological transition in a local environment in México’s western states, so that it can be possible to instigate the bases to replicate it in different locations in the influence area of the PGS; but it can also be a tool for those PGS who see the opportunity to work building networks instead of working exclusively tied to a local physical market; coming from de participatory action research (to a very small scale), it proposes how to create the bases to build a perspective on a regional PGS pilot plan (subcommittees and associated groups), that can considerate the specific needs of the communities or the associated alternative outlets. This investigation has a collective analysis from before de creation of the PGS to recent times, that was made through interviews and the complete analysis of the internal documents of the organization that led to the construction of the life story of El Jilote PGS and the systematization of its experiences and jobs done, so it’s through this project that we pursue to build and adapt the documents necessary to obtain the national recognition before the government as a Participatory organic certification system. It´s submitted in this document, improvement proposals and adjustments to funding, collective operative structure, flow charts, problem and conflict resolution, and comprehensive operation strategies of a larger group so that they can be worked collectively in the PGS committee

X, 133, [6] páginas.Trabajo Fin de Máster Propio. Tutores: Dra. Dª Mercedes Núñez Román; Mgr. Dagmar Zíková. The thesis addresses the issue whether the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) stipulates Parties’ legal obligations to export captive-bred Appendix I animal species only, if the breeding facility registered is registered under Resolution Conf. 12.10 (Rev. CoP15). Beyond the legal question, the focus is mainly on the policy issue whether the registration system provides added value in respect of the protection of endangered species in comparison to a stand-alone permit system, balanced against a possible delta regarding administrative burdens, and should therefore be the preferred option. The research was conducted as a desktop study. Key documents from the CITES context were identified and used, as well as data from the CITES Trade Database covering a five year period from 2017 to 2021, the CITES Register on breeding operations, information from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UNODC’s World Wildlife Crime Reports on laundering risk, Transparency International’s corruption index, published information on six registration procedures, and a chronology of CITES Resolutions dealing with a register for captive-breeding operations. The findings are that, strictly from a legal point of view, there is no legal obligation. In addition, a strict permit system could qualify as a stricter domestic measure. From a policy perspective, the current registration system provides added value. However, its administrative burdens compared to the counterfactual outweigh the benefits. Therefore, a stand-alone national permit system is preferred, alternatively, the registration system should be reformed. Ideas for reforms are included

A roadmap towards a non-detriment finding for Pterocarpus erinaceus in Sierra Leone

XI, 95 páginas.Trabajo Fin de Máster Propio. Tutoras: Dra. Margarita África Clemente Muñoz ; Isabel Camarena. Developing a roadmap towards a Non-Detriment Finding for Pterocarpus erinaceus in Sierra Leone is viewed as a critical and timely intervention for Sierra Leone and other range state who may want to conduct a NDF for the above-named species and other CITES's listed species. It should serve as a guide, steps and directive that could help in the development of a non-detriment finding for the sustainable harvesting and exportation of Pterocarpus erinaceus in accordance with recommendations under Review of Significant Trade (RST) process in line with Resolution Conf. 12.8 (Rev. CoP18). The goal of this research intervention was to develop a roadmap that can inform the development of a non-detriment findings on Pterocarpus erinaceus in Sierra Leone and other range state. This roadmap is applicable to any other CITES’ listed Species. To this end, the specific objectives were: 1. Conduct a systematic review of existing knowledge on ecology, trade volumes, threats, and legislation on P. erinaceus in Sierra Leone. 2. Establish progress and constraints in implementing recommendations for sustainable management of P. erinaceus from previous studies, and from CITES; and 3. Define a roadmap towards producing NDFs for P. erinaceus in Sierra Leone and improve compliance with CITES. To get the desired result expected, a diversified research tools and, methodologies were used including desk review, checklist and questionnaire design approach supported by field visit and observation of the areas where the species is found, review of data on trade volume from internet and CITES trade database. It further shifted to review of previous inventory work and maps to serve as guide in the selection of the study area. etc. Based upon the research findings and literature works reviewed, it was noted that the species in question is indeed harvested without reference to size, height etc. The roadmap shows the above component as missing links for a Non-Detriment finding for Pterocarpus erinaceus. No documented research work has ever been conducted in this country on this species to show the species spread, local use, threats, facing it. The only documented but unpublished academic research work that was conducted by Foray-Musa was not detailed enough to capture the species’ location, spread, characteristics or threats

A review of the effecttiveness of CITES implementation in conservation of listed species of concern : The National Action Plans on Elephant Ivory and Rhino Horn Trade

    Get PDF
VIII, 73 páginas.Trabajo Fin de Máster Propio. Tutor: Dr. Kariuki Muigua. The African Elephant and the black rhino were listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) in 1989 and 1997, respectively, prohibiting their international trade. However, the illegal ivory trade continued to thrive, leading to the development of National Ivory Action Plans (NIAPs) to combat the illicit ivory trade and trafficking. The NIAPs process created an obligation on CITES parties in the illegal ivory supply chain to take specific measures in specific timeframes to tackle the trade. The CITES Guidelines to the National Ivory Action Plan process adopted at the 17th Conference of the Parties recognized the need for performance indicators and targets to demonstrate progress. The aim of this research is to assess the efficacy of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) measures that are specific to certain species. This includes examining the effectiveness of the National Ivory Action Plans Process and the Rhino Horn National Action Plans in the conservation of endangered species. The study also seeks to determine whether similar measures can be applied to other species of concern that are listed under CITES, to prevent their extinction caused by unsustainable trade. The study utilized questionnaires and interviews to investigate the effectiveness of CITES measures in the conservation of specific endangered species. Expert interviews were conducted with 15 individuals from law enforcement and CITES management and scientific authorities officers, selected based on their role in implementing CITES provisions and developing and implementing national ivory and rhino horn plans, as well as wildlife law enforcement. The interviews took place from December 2022 to March 2023, both in person and online, and consisted of predetermined close-ended questions. Experts were chosen from various CITES management authorities, scientific authorities, non-government agencies, and law enforcement officers, including customs officers. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of CITES measures and their potential application to other endangered species. The study findings are presented through charts and tables, and indicate that the majority of interviewees were from management authorities. This is a crucial role in the CITES processes and the National Action Plans process, as they are responsible for permitting and reporting
