From textual abstracts to video abstracts on health sciences: towards multimodality in the RA genre
Doctorat internacionalThis doctoral thesis investigates the educational value and communicative affordances of Video Abstracts (VAs) as emerging multimodal genres in health sciences education. While originally developed to summarise scholarly articles for broader dissemination, VAs are gaining increased relevance as instructional tools capable of engaging diverse learners through multimodal strategies. Grounded in genre theory (Swales, 1990; Bhatia, 2002) and multimodal discourse analysis (Kress, 2010; O’Halloran, 2011), the study examines how VAs support comprehension, engagement, and retention of scientific content among undergraduate students in medicine, nursing, and psychology. Adopting a mixed-methods design that combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study analyses VAs as socially situated communicative artefacts. The methodological framework is dual-layered: first, a qualitative multimodal analysis of four carefully selected VAs (drawn from an initial corpus of 104 videos) was conducted using ELAN software (Wittenburg et al., 2006) to annotate semiotic features such as gesture, gaze, prosody, visual elements, and editing. In parallel, a quantitative empirical reception study was carried out with 180 undergraduate students at Universitat Jaume I, who viewed the VAs, read the corresponding Textual Abstracts (TAs), and completed structured questionnaires via Qualtrics software (Qualtrics, 2025). These instruments assessed dimensions such as comprehension, affective-cognitive engagement, and perceived usefulness, allowing for the integration of textual analysis with user perceptions (Creswell & Poth, 2016; Lin & Lei, 2021). The findings indicate that VAs significantly enhance comprehension when verbal narration is meaningfully synchronised with visual, gestural, and prosodic cues (Mayer, 2009). Additionally, students demonstrated a marked preference for audiovisual formats over TAs, particularly with regard to clarity, retention, and emotional resonance (Curtis et al., 2019; Finkler & Leon, 2019). Multimodal sequences characterised by dynamic prosody, embodied gestures, and strong visual coherence were perceived as most effective for promoting understanding. The study also highlights how learner engagement is mediated by prior digital literacy and linguistic background, with implications for equitable access to scientific knowledge (Hamel, 2007; Lillis & Curry, 2011). The research supports the pedagogical principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (Rose & Meyer, 2002; Ferreira, 2023) and aligns with global educational priorities, especially the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4: Quality Education; SDG 9: Innovation; SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities). Consequently, VAs emerge not only as tools for scientific communication, but also as inclusive learning artefacts that foster learner autonomy, multimodal literacy, and epistemic justice. Importantly, the study engages with the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries perpetuated by the dominance of English in scientific publishing (Curry & Lillis, 2004; Lillis & Curry, 2011). While not erasing these inequalities, VAs provide alternative semiotic resources for researchers and learners navigating across linguistic and cultural boundaries, thus expanding the communicative repertoire of scientific discourse. By integrating multimodal analysis with user-centred empirical inquiry, this dissertation contributes to science communication, digital genre studies, and educational practice in higher education. It ultimately calls for a reimagining of academic communication—one that is not only rigorous and technologically innovative, but also educationally grounded, inclusive, and socially engaged.
Codi: SRM042.
Novel neutral and ionic metal-organic frameworks for sustainable catalytic processes
This thesis explores new strategies for designing and enhancing the chemical reactivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to convert waste into valuable chemical products. MOFs were synthesized in combination with 3D-printed polymers and ionic liquids, forming composite materials with improved catalytic performance due to the high dispersion of active sites. Functionalization was achieved by anchoring amino acids to the MOFs, creating multifunctional materials under mild, environmentally friendly conditions using non-toxic, abundant metals and bio-based ligands. Various synthesis methods based on classical, solvent-assisted, and rapid green, onepot approaches were used to develop and characterize these materials. The resulting MOFs were effective in reactions relevant to waste valorization, such as CO₂ fixation and carbonyl activation, operating under mild conditions without additives. The materials demonstrated superior activity, stability, and reusability, aligning with principles of green and circular chemistry, and contributing to the development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts for sustainable chemical processes.Programa de Doctorat en Química Sostenibl

Implementation of Evidence-Based Psychological Treatments to Address Depressive Disorders: A Systematic Review
The depressed population needs to be treated and they do not have access to evidenced-based psychological practices (EBPPs). The consequences lead to significant daily impairments and huge economical costs. A large amount of research has focused on the demand for a more extensive use of EBPPs. However, despite these practices being essential to the mental health system, EBPPs are poorly applied in clinical settings. This situation has led to the development of Implementation Research (IR), a scientific field that aims to address the challenge of translation and identify the factors involved in the implementation process. Several implementation studies have been carried out in the field of health. However, the evidence from implementation studies of psychological treatments addressing depression has not yet been summarized. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review to assess implementation studies that use EBPPs to address depression. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, including implementation studies that applied EBPPs to address depressive disorders. The following databases were used: PubMed, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Cochrane Central, Scopus, and Web of Science. Two independent reviewers revised the studies to determine whether the eligibility criteria were met. Results: A total of 8797 studies were identified through database searches. After removing duplicates, a total of 3757 studies were screened based on titles and abstracts. Finally, 127 full-text articles were reviewed, yielding 31 studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria. Conclusions: This review offers valuable insights into the current state of IR in the implementation of EBPPs for treating depressive disorders. It underlines the necessity for a standardized nomenclature for study designs within the realm of IR and emphasizes the potential of hybrid efficacy–implementation studies to help close the gap between research and clinical practice. Despite the challenges encountered, this review points to a positive outlook for the use of IR in clinical psychology. A gradual adoption of IR is likely to strengthen its role in psychology and support the development of more effective strategies for implementing evidence-based interventions in clinical settings.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Spain). A survey to investigate approaches, methods, contents and objectives in education for sustainable design
Limited research has explored the delivery of sustainable design in higher education globally. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to investigate educational practices on the topic. Through an online survey, we investigated numerous aspects of units of study exposing topics related to sustainable design with a focus on contents, teaching methods and educational objectives. The survey was accessed by almost 400 educators in the field of sustainable design. The data show that a variety of teaching methods are used, with a critical role played by project-based learning in addition to traditional lectures. Most respondents rated all investigated intended learning outcomes as relevant or very relevant. In terms of contents and methods treated by the respondents, product eco-design and design for X are the most frequently taught methods. Educational approaches and teaching objectives are poorly affected by the discipline of the degree in which units of study are taught. In terms of contents, design degrees include approaches to sustainable design at the spatio-social level more frequently than engineering degrees do
Openings and studio branding in the SVoD context. The case of Netflix Originals anime.
[EN] Opening sequences represent more than an informative account of the contributors to an audiovisual production. Selective carbonyl reduction in unsaturated esters and aldehydes by transfer hydrogenation
Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (TH) is an alternative to the industrially relevant hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds, dismissing the use of pressurized reactors. Herein, we compare ruthenium and osmium pincer complexes as catalysts for the selective carbonyl reduction of the renewable methyl 10-undecenoate, myrtenal, and cinnamaldehyde. Their selective carbonyl reduction is challenging because they also have a C–C double bond susceptible to reduction or isomerization. The osmium complexes, used for the first time in TH, showed considerably better activity and selectivity than the ruthenium ones. The reactions were carried out at temperatures as low as 35 °C at short reaction times, and a solvent screening demonstrated that anisole, which has a high sustainability score, is also the most efficient solvent for these reactions. Finally, renewable ethanol was employed as a sacrificial hydrogen source, circumventing the use of the usually high-carbon-footprint dihydrogen
Design creativity in AI: Using the SCAMPER method
The rise of generative artificial intelligences (AIs) has quickly made them auxiliary tools in numerous fields, especially in the creative one. Many scientific works already discuss the comparison of the creative capacity of AIs with human beings. In the field of Engineering Design, however, numerous design methodologies have been developed that enhance the creativity of the designer in their idea generation phase. Therefore, this work aims to expand previous works by leading a Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) based generative AI to use a design methodology to generate creative concepts. The results suggest that these types of tools can be useful for designers in that they can inspire novel ideas, but they still lack the necessary capacity to discern technically feasible ideas
Electrocatalytic systems for the synthesis of value-added products
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalTo address the challenges posed by climate change and global warming, there is a pressing need to utilise renewable materials that can be obtained in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. The utilisation of biomass as a source of chemicals represents a revolutionary methodology with the potential to overcome humanity's reliance on fossil resources. Electrochemical technologies are advantageous in synthesising value-added products from biomass at atmospheric temperature and pressure, utilising water as a solvent and concurrently as a source of oxygen and hydrogen atoms and regulating chemical reactions through the application of electrical potential. In this study, inexpensive materials such as Cu and graphite, with slight modifications of catalytic metals such as Pd, Ag, Ni, were used for the electrochemical production of compounds that are used to produce polymeric materials, biofuels, pharmaceutical industry, etc.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
