    No full text

How does the work context impact us throughout life? A multilevel approach to the interaction between work context and age

    No full text
The aging population presents a demographic challenge that necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. This demographic shift is also transforming the work domain. The age range within teams and organizations is broadening, resulting in increased diversity in experience, cultural values, strengths, and vulnerabilities that creates complex work scenarios that can affect organizational outcomes and workers’ well-being. Work and organizational researchers have contributed to disclose this challenge primarily by adopting a lifespan developmental approach, yielding valuable insights into the relationships between aging and work. However, research indicates that age alone, along with its associated changes, is not a sufficient explanation for these phenomena and additional factors must be considered. Particularly, there is a necessity of further research on the effects of work environment, as individuals’ lifespan changes that impact work-related outcomes, might be more or less adaptive depending on the work context. This dissertation aims to provide empirical evidence of cross-level interactive effects between age and teams' contextual features that might impact key work outcomes related to well-being and performance. Specifically, three contextual dimensions are studied in relation to age: first, teams' age diversity; second, contextual emotional job demands; and third, contextual role ambiguity. These interactions are examined in relation to three respective work outcomes: work performance, engagement, and burnout.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi

Homogenous catalysis by molybdenum sulfide clusters and the study of their sulfur-centered mechanisms

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalThe present doctoral thesis is included within the homogenous catalysis field. A comprehensive study has been conducted on the catalytic activity of molybdenum sulfide cluster compounds coordinated with nitrogen-donor ligands. First, the synthesis of a novel compound containing the ethylenediamine ligand was optimized and characterized using classical spectrometric and spectroscopic techniques. Additionally, the crystalline structure of this complex was determined through single-crystal analysis using electron diffraction techniques. The catalytic activity of molybdenum clusters with the Mo3S4 unit was investigated in C–C coupling reactions for the production of esters, sulfoxide hydrogenation to obtain sulfides, and the methanolysis of hydrosilanes for the synthesis of methoxysilanes and hydrogen. Kinetic studies and control experiments demonstrated that these transformations occur via sulfur atoms, enabling an in-depth investigation of the reaction mechanisms. Finally, using DFT techniques, the reaction mechanisms for sulfoxide hydrogenation and methanolysis were elucidated based on experimental evidence obtained.

This study evaluated the impact of online and in-person exercise programs on QoL, adherence, and phy- sical fitness in women with breast cancer, compared with general, unsupervised exercise re- commendations. Using a randomized clinical trial, two groups were compared: supervised online exercise at home, and a general, unsupervised recommendation group. The supervi- sed programs consisted of 60-minute sessions of combined exercise (resistance and aerobic) for 24 weeks. The results demonstrated significant improvements in QoL and physical fitness in the intervention group, as well as greater exercise adherence in the online group. Partici- pants reported benefits in symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and appetite, as well as impro- vements in self-esteem and empowerment. No significant changes in body composition were observed between the groups. This study highlights that both online and in-person exercise are viable and effective strategies to optimize QoL in breast cancer patients undergoing active treatment, even in contexts such as the COVID-19 pandemic.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències Biomèdiques i Salu

Analysis of the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America: The impact of built parkland in richness and abundance of birds

    No full text
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalUrban expansion creates new bird habitats, prompting studies on how city elements affect these species. However, the influence of buildings remains under-investigated. This thesis analyzes the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America, assessing bird richness and abundance across scales and environmental variables, including buildings. The methodology combined local transect data with regional and international citizen science, analyzed using Excel and R. Findings show birds prefer historical buildings for nesting, and mid-rise buildings (two to four levels) correlate with greater bird richness and abundance. In conclusion, the study emphasizes integrating biodiversity into urban planning, highlighting the ecological value of historical buildings and the need for biodiversity-friendly measures to mitigate habitat loss. The combination of building height and impervious cover better predicts bird diversity than either alone. This work advances landscape ecology by incorporating vertical urban structure into biodiversity models.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material

Emotional reasoning as a transdiagnostic process in patients with public speaking anxiety. Evaluation and design of a psychological intervention.

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalThe transdiagnostic perspective suggests that psychological disorders may share underlying processes. Harvey’s model identifies Emotional Reasoning (ER) as one such mechanism, whereby emotions are used to judge reality, leading individuals to equate anxiety with danger. This study examined ER in Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA), a prevalent condition. A systematic review revealed evidence of ER biases in anxiety disorders, though not in depression. Subsequently, the Emotional Reasoning Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (ERPSAS) was developed and validated with a Spanish sample, demonstrating strong reliability. Findings showed that individuals with PSA judged anxious scenarios as more dangerous than objectively threatening ones, confirming the presence of ER bias. Additionally, a self-administered online intervention, HablaRÉ, was created to reduce ER bias. A feasibility study indicated high usability, satisfaction, and adherence (94%), alongside preliminary improvements in ER and PSA symptoms. These findings support the role of ER in PSA and provide novel tools for assessment and intervention.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi
