A Comprehensive Approach to Language-Related Episodes (LREs) in English-Medium Instruction: Typology, Multimodal Nature, and Lecturers’ Beliefs

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalThis study explores the use of Language-Related Episodes (LREs) in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) settings: spontaneous moments when attention shifts from content to language. Through a case study of two lecturers in Mechanical Engineering and Business Management at a Spanish university, it draws on audiovisual recordings and interview data. The study explores the LREs’ typologies, multimodal features, and the lecturers’ beliefs on their practices. Findings indicate that LREs are scarce and call for new categories in the classification of LREs, emphasizing their collaborative and context-specific nature. A multimodal lens highlights the significant role of gestures, gaze, and visuals in reinforcing meaning, while lecturers, however, showed partial awareness of their use of multimodality. The study highlights LREs’ potential to address language barriers, improve communication, and support students’ academic and linguistic development in EMI contexts, and thus, advocates for integrating LRE into EMI teacher training to foster alignment between language and content.

The objective of this industrial thesis is to propose the possibility of an ethics officer in the company and the functions that he/she should perform in order to turn business ethics into a factor of social innovation, creativity and competitiveness. The methodology used has a double root. Firstly, a critical hermeneutic that addresses the ethical bases of trust in the company. To this end, the ethics of discourse or ethics of dialogue is used, consisting of seeking dialogue and agreement among all stakeholders involved in business activity. Secondly, an empirical analysis is used through a comparative analysis of the main B2B service companies. The practices carried out in the Unite company make it possible to affirm the need for an ethics manager, as well as the difficulties of locating his or her place in the company.Programa de Doctorat en Ètica i Democràci

Treball Final de Màster Universitari en Professor/a d'Educació Secundària Obligatòria i Batxillerat, Formació Professional i Ensenyaments d'Idiomes. Codi SAP419. Curs: 2024/2025This master’s thesis presents a learning situation designed for the EFL classroom in a 4th year of ESO context, grounded in the integration of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), Meaningful Learning, and Cooperative Learning. Together, these approaches seek to engage students in the active use of English for communicative purposes. The project is aligned with the curricular framework of Decree 107/2022 of the Valencian Community, integrating key competences and basic curricular knowledge. The learning situation, titled Let’s Create a Free Tour!, aims to bridge the gap between traditional textbook-based instruction and the authentic, functional use of the English language, observed during the internship period. Over six sessions, students are guided through a structured task-based process of information research, script writing, language review, digital editing and peer evaluation. The tasks are designed to be student-centred and promote the use of English in real contexts, encouraging learners to draw on their prior knowledge and apply grammatical structures previously acquired in the classroom. By anchoring tasks in learners’ prior knowledge and encouraging peer interaction, the learning situation enhances students’ motivation and cognitive engagement. Although the proposal could not be implemented, it demonstrates the potential of task-based approaches to create meaningful learning experiences in the EFL classroom

    No full text
This doctoral thesis, presented as a compendium of scientific articles, addresses peritoneal carcinomatosis, traditionally considered a terminal stage of various malignancies, with ovarian cancer being one of its most frequent causes. The development of new therapeutic strategies, such as cytoreductive surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), has significantly improved patient survival. However, these are highly complex and aggressive surgical procedures, associated with a high rate of complications. Such interventions require close monitoring throughout the perioperative period, as surgical stress and increased metabolic demands can lead to an imbalance between oxygen supply and demand. This condition correlates with elevated lactate levels, which have been shown to be predictive markers of perioperative morbidity and mortality. The main objective of this work is, on the one hand, to identify quality indicators in cytoreductive surgery and to define standards that allow for the evaluation and optimization of healthcare delivery. On the other hand, considering that elevated lactate levels have been associated with increased perioperative morbidity and mortality, the relationship between lactatemia and postoperative complications in patients undergoing this type of surgery is analyzed. In addition, the influence of various intraoperative parameters on lactatemia is examined in order to identify modifiable factors that may help reduce morbidity and mortality and improve clinical outcomes. This work represents the starting point of a research line focused on optimizing the perioperative management of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, with the ultimate goal of improving their prognosis and quality of life.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències Biomèdiques i Salu

Simultaneous LC-MS/MS determination of multi-class emerging contaminants in an orange plant system

    No full text
As freshwater supplies decline, agriculture is turning to alternative sources like recycled wastewater for irrigation. However, treated wastewater may still contain organic micropollutants (OMPs), which can contaminate soil, be absorbed by crops, and enter the food chain. This raises the need for analytical methods to reliable identify and quantify OMPs in vegetable and soil matrices at low concentrations. Additionally, advanced wastewater treatment methods are necessary to minimize OMPs in effluents from conventional wastewater treatment plants. This study, part of a broader project on recycled wastewater for irrigating orange fields, focused on developing a modified QuEChERS method to determine 18 pesticides and 15 pharmaceuticals in soil, orange leaves and fruits. Compounds were quantified using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with a triple quadrupole. The methods were validated at two fortification levels (1–5 and 10–50 ng g−1). Matrix effects were evaluated, showing a minimal impact in soil, but significant effects (> 20 %) in oranges and leaves, requiring matrix-matched calibration and/or isotopically labeled internal standards for accurate correction. The recoveries for most compounds were within 70–120 %, with relative standard deviations under 20 %, and limits of quantification ranged 1–5 ng g−1. In real samples, the insecticide acetamiprid was the most bioaccumulated contaminant, exceeding 20 ng g−1 in leaves. Eleven pesticides were detected at concentrations below the limit of quantification, and the pharmaceutical atorvastatin was found in a soil sample

    No full text
This thesis analyzes how social capital (bonding and bridging) and entrepreneurial orientation influence the economic and environmental outcomes of tourism businesses in the rural destination of Els Ports (Spain). Through a territorial approach, a theoretical model is proposed and validated using structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), along with qualitative and cartographic tools. The results show that bonding capital positively impacts both types of outcomes, while bridging capital stands out in environmental ones. Entrepreneurial orientation partially moderates these effects. The thesis offers an integrated framework to understand tourism business dynamics in rural areas and proposes future research focused on longitudinal and comparative analyses, as well as on strengthening entrepreneurial and collaborative capacities in specific territorial contexts. It concludes that the combination of internal social networks and strategic entrepreneurial capacities enhances sustainable business performance in rural tourism destinations such as Els Ports.Programa de Doctorat en Desenvolupament Local i Cooperació Internaciona

Refrigeration technologies to increase cold chain sustainability

    No full text
The cold chain is an essential system of temperature-controlled logistics that ensures the quality and safety of perishable goods. Refrigeration technologies in the chain, which mostly use vapour-compression refrigeration, have large direct and indirect negative environmental impacts linked to high energy consumption and the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential. This Review examines the technical and environmental challenges of refrigeration systems used in transport (road, sea and air) and stationary applications (refrigerated warehouses and retail stores). Across applications, refrigerants with low global warming potential, phase-change materials and vacuum-insulation panels could be used to reduce energy consumption and emissions, with some demonstrations showing reductions of 25–86%. In road transport, photovoltaic-powered refrigeration and hybrid cooling systems could be implemented to reduce emissions but adoption is impeded by high costs and safety concerns. Improved thermal insulation and waste-heat recovery for fresh transportation could be used in sea transport. Advanced energy management and renewable energy integration could be leveraged in stationary storage to reduce emissions by up to 60% and enable off-grid refrigeration. In all of these applications, operational reliability must be maintained, which will require coordinated industry efforts and policy support

Neuropeptidergic Modulation and Neural Pathways in Contextual Fear Conditioning and Extinction: Insights from the Retrosplenial Cortex and Nucleus Incertus

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalThis work examines the mechanisms underlying contextual fear conditioning and the role of neural networks in memory processing. We assessed how different procedural factors influence the acquisition and extinction of contextual fear in rats, revealing that spaced sessions of conditioning enhance extinction, while minimal shocks produce context-specific fear. More intense conditioning, however, leads to fear generalization across contexts, which can be extinguished similarly to the conditioned context. Additionally, we explored the role of the the neuropeptide relaxin-3 (RLN3) signaling via the RXFP3 receptor in the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) in contextual fear conditioning. Modulation of RXFP3 in the RSC delayed fear extinction without affecting acquisition, suggesting that RLN3/RXFP3 signaling enhances memory strength, making extinction more resistant. Anatomical studies confirmed a strong presence of RLN3-immunoreactive fibers in the RSC, particularly co-localizing with inhibitory circuits. Finally, we investigated the connectivity between the RSC and other brain regions, particularly the bidirectional projections between the RSC, prefrontal cortex, and nucleus incertus. These connections were confirmed using anterograde and retrograde tracers, highlighting a broader cortical and subcortical network that involves key regions such as the prelimbic and orbitofrontal cortices, the medial septum habenula, interpeduncular, and the supramammillary nucleus. All together, these findings provide a more integrated understanding of the circuitry involved in contextual fear and memory processing, emphasizing the long-loop interactions between the retrosplenial cortex, prefrontal areas, and subcortical structures in regulating fear acquisition and extinction processes.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències Biomèdiques i Salu
